Interpretation of vertical and lateral seismic profiles : some case histories

Hattingh, Ronald Clifford 21 July 2010 (has links)
The integrated processing and interpretation of VSP data are developed to work together in order to enhance the final VSP interpretation. Furthermore, the interpretive processing of the VSP data within the case histories are reviewed along with the incorporation of the final VSP results (both near and far offset data) into the integrated geological/geophysical interpretations presented in the case studies. This thesis has attempted to personify the term "interpreter/processor" as first highlighted in Hardage (1985). The case histories pertain to oil and gas exploration in carbonate reef and sandstones in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin (WCSB). The Lanaway case history (Hinds et al., 1994a) pertains to the exploration of the Lanaway/Garrington oil field located in central Alberta, Canada. The surface seismic interpretation over the reef crest differed dramatically from the isopach of the reef-encasing shales derived from the geological logs of a borehole drilled into the reef crest. To understand the discrepancy, a VSP survey was performed and the data were interpretatively processed. The results were integrated with the known geology of the field area to uncover possible reasons for the surface seismic anomaly. field in central Alberta, Canada, using the far offset VSP survey. Existing surface seismic was used to infer that a well drilled into the interpreted North-east corner of the Ricinus reef would be successful in penetrating oil bearing carbonate reef. The well was drilled; however, the well missed the reef and a near and far offset VSP survey was used to seismically image possible reef buildups in an area around the well. The Fort St. John Graben case history (Hinds et al., 1991a; Hinds et al., 1993a) highlights exploration of a gas-filled channel sandstone using near and far offset (lateral) VSP surveys. An exploration well was drilled within the study area which intersected the target zone sandstone (the basal Kiskatinaw of the Upper Carboniferous). The target sandstone had a high shale content and was not reservoir quality. A near offset and two far offset VSP surveys were run in the exploration well to image out to a distance of 350 m to the North-west and to the East of the well. The VSP, surface seismic and geology results (from the geological logs of the exploration and surrounding wells) are integrated to infer a clearer picture of the sand/shale relationships of the basal Kiskatinaw and detailed faulting of the Carboniferous strata around the well and within the surface seismic line area. The Simonette field case history (Hinds et al., 1991 b; Hinds et al., 1993b) involves using VSP results to image the slope of a low-relief carbonate reef. The low-relief reef examined using the VSP data is located at the extreme end of a North-east reef spur of the Simonette Reef located in North-west Alberta, Canada. An exploration well drilled in the low-relief reef penetrated the edge of the reef. The VSP surveys were run in order to infer details of the reef slope. The interpretation of the VSP data was integrated with all other exploration data to infer the location of the crest of the low-relief reef and to assist in determining whether to whipstock the exploration well or not. / Thesis (DSc)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Geology / unrestricted

Bexiga, Gabriela Muller Sampaio January 2016 (has links)
The Patos Lagoon, for its importance and magnitude, is the subject of numerous researches related to its geological and paleogeographic evolutionary context. For the investigation of its bottom and subbottom characteristics, about 700 km of seismic data of 3.5 kHz were surveyed in 2002 and 2006. This study considered nearly 153 Km of seismic records collected in the south of the Patos Lagoon cell, aiming to the identification and mapping of echo-character. For data integration and visualization of the results, geoprocessing methods were applied. The seismic profiles analyzed allowed the identification of three major echo-characters, which were grouped according to the aspect of the primary reflector (bottom), the occurrence of subbottom reflections, the geometry of the subbottom reflections. The echo-character A presented distinct and continuous surface (bottom) with well-defined subbottom reflections, generally parallel and continuous, which follow the topography of the surface; echo-character B was characterized by a diffuse primary reflector and poorly defined subbottom reflections, diffuse or blurry; echo-character C consisted of a plane and very strong well-defined first reflector and presents a series of low loss multiple reflections. These echo-characters were related to the bathymetry and the bottom sediments of the area, in order to observe the relationship between them and the acoustic response associated with the echo. The echo-characters identified presented good correlation to the sedimentological characteristics of the area and the hydrodynamic processes acting in the south cell of the lagoon system. Acoustic anomalies identified in ecograms indicate the occurrence of large amounts of shallow gas spread in intra-lagoon sedimentary packages. This study confirms the importance of a better understanding of the effects of hydrodynamics in sedimentation processes and presents relevant information to support geomorphological and hydrodynamics studies to be conducted in the Patos Lagoon.

Les processus sédimentaires, depuis la pente continentale jusqu'au bassin, en contexte de tectonique active : analyse comparée entre la Marge Calabro-Ionienne et la Marge Ligure durant les derniers 5 Ma / Slope to basin sedimentary processes in tectonically active settings : a comparative analysis of the Calabro-Ionian and Ligurian Margin, during the last 5 Ma

Coste, Marianne 28 May 2014 (has links)
Sediment transfer from the continental shelf to the deep basin is of great interest as it partially controls the morphological and architectural evolution of continental margins. Transfer of particles on the continental slope associates with processes of erosion and deposition that control the construction of typical features such as submarine canyons. Because they strongly erode the continental slope, canyons contribute significantly to its morphological evolution through time. However, a number of studies have evidenced submarine canyons that do not connect with sub‐aerial channelized systems, questioning their processes of formation and evolution. This study aims to better understand the processes of formation and evolution of six submarine canyons identified on the western margin of the Ligurian Basin and ten canyons systems on the Calabro-Ionian margin. From morphometric and structural analyses based respectively on bathymetric, seismic‐reflexion (24‐channel profiles) data, Chirp and SAR profiles we constrained the main morphometric characteristics (length, width, depth, slope gradient, sinuosity index), morphologic (architectural elements and configuration) of canyons, their downward evolution and we analyzed their internal structure in order to better understand their origin, construction mechanisms and evolution in relation with the regional geological context and their potentials subaerial systems.

Contraintes par imagerie sismique pénétrante sur l'évolution d'une marge Cénozoïque réactivée en compression (cas de la marge algérienne, secteur de Tipaza) / Constraints by penetrating seismic imaging on the evolution of a Cenozoic margin reactivated in compression (Algerian margin, sector of Tipaza)

Leprêtre, Angélique 18 December 2012 (has links)
The inversion of passive margins appears to be one of the first steps towards the initiation of new subduction zones. This crucial step in plate tectonics nevertheless still raises many questions. The study of margins currently reactivated by compressional tectonics is thus essential to better understand this process. These margins are uncommon, located in different geodynamic settings, and the factors determining their evolution are poorly constrained. The Algerian margin, located in North Africa, is one of handful of modern examples worldwide. The evolution of this margin, rifted during the Miocene, in a back-arc setting, is part ofthe complex puzzle of the western Mediterranean. Since a few million years, the margin has suffered inversion and compression in the framework of slow on going convergence between the European and African plates. This convergence generates moderate to strong earthquakes in North Algeria. The relatively young age of the Algerian basin, the large sediment load, and the compressive forces, constitute favorable conditions to the formation of a future subduction zone. Studies from the past ten years indicate, that themain unresolved questions are related to (1) the deep structure of the Algerian basin and its southern margin (the type of margin, the nature of the basement, the dimension and nature of the ocean-continent transition, the style and the distribution of the compressional deformation), and (2) the history of the kinematic and geodynamic evolution of the basin. All of these unknowns have prevented a complete and thorough analysis of modalities of the Algerian margin inversion. This study focuses on the Central Algerian margin, in the area of Tipaza (West of Algiers), a key region to understand the mechanism of the opening of the Algerian basin. Processing and analysis of a deep wide-angle and multichannel seismic new data set acquired in the context of the French-Algerian project SPIRAL (Sismique profonde et Investigation Régionales en Algérie, 2009)have enabled us to determine the crustal structure of the Algerian basin and its southern continental margin,as well as the pseudo-3D structure of a specific feature in the study area: the submarine topographic highformed by the Khayr-al-Din bank. The analysis of the deep structure of the margin reveals features inherited from its complex evolution: (1) a crust of continental nature of more than 15 km thick at the upper margin(Khayr-al-Din Bank), (2) a thin crust of oceanic nature, 5-6 thick in the deep basin, including slightly high velocities at its base (7.2 km/s - 7.3 km/s), (3) similarities with margins formed in context of transform deformation, (4) a progressive deepening of the whole sedimentary cover and the thickening of the Plio-Quaternary sediments, from the distal deep basin towards the margin foot, coeval with (5) a long wavelengthflexuration of the basement in the basin. Results from this study provide new constraints on (1) the geometryand nature of the margin and the basin, (2) the evolution of the margin, suggesting a multiphased history including a stage of rifting and/or oceanic spreading, a transcurrent episode due to the westward migration of the Alboran block, and a diffuse Plio-Quaternary compressional reactivation distributed from the deep basinto the upper margin; (3) the mechanisms of the reactivation marked by newly formed south-dipping blind-thrusts, especially at the foot of the Khayr-al-Din bank, and suggesting a Plio-Quaternary uplift of the bankof 0.2 mm/y to 0.75 mm/y and the early stages of imbricate thrusting of crustal scales.

Analyse multi-échelles des déstabilisations sous-marines de la Marge Ligure : implications sur la répartition spatio-temporelle des facteurs déclenchant [sic] / Multi-scale analysis of submarine landslides on the Ligurian Margin : implication on the spatio-temporal distribution of the triggering factors

Hassoun, Virginie 30 September 2014 (has links)
The Ligurian margin is a passive margin characterized by high sedimentation rates during the Plio-Quaternary. It is affected by a compressive tectonic deformation leading to the inversion of the margin, together with a salt tectonic. The present-day moderate seismic activity is punctuated by stronger seismic events. Thus, this margin offers a good natural laboratory to study submarine landslides and their triggering factors. Although the Var Turbidite System has been well investigated over the last 20 years, the morphology and tectonics/sedimentary processes affecting the whole margin remained poorly known. This study aims to describe and to characterize the main types of mass movements, their preferential locations along the Ligurian margin during the Plio-Quaternary and their triggering factors to improve geohazards assessment related to landslides. A dataset including bathymetric and geophysical data and cores allowed to realize a multi-scale study of submarine failures and their associated triggering factors. About 1500 landslides were identified on the margin and in the basin. The study of their spatio-temporal distribution revealed that the margin has always been affected by mass-wasting processes and that the main zones of landsliding migrated westward during the Plio-Quaternary. The largest submarine landslides are preferentially associated with the highest deformation rates and their location is controlled by crustal tectonics and/or salt tectonics. The initiation of failures results from the combination of several factors including the margin deformation, earthquakes, salt tectonics and sediment under-consolidation.
