Earlier stage career research of the Electronic Engineers ¡V example from Foreign Company Abstract The objective of this paper is to understand why electronic engineers select engineer to be their career. Through individual life story to get better knowledge from engineers about how the decision-making resource, self concept and thread of thought from social culture affect their career decision during engineers¡¦ earily stage of life. Because there are so many situations for a person to make decisions in their on-going life, the quantitative methodology might not exactly present the complicated aspect of this study, hence the narrative qualitative approach is chosen as the methodology of this study. Through intensive interviews to collect life stories, we interviewed seven engineers, four of them are R&D engineers and three of the others are Application Engineers. To have broaden views , sample cases¡¦ born years are selected from 1950 to 1978, we believed this could be helpful for us to see the difference in the selected cased. When we put together all the seven career decision-making narrative stories of the engineers, the issues that affect career decision-making were distinguished into four aspects which includes decision-making resources collecting, self-concept, important others that affect decision-making and the social culture stand for in their age. A study of the relationship between multiple intelligence and self-concept on the elementary students of aborigines in Pingtung County

Abstract The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between the multiple intelligence, its distribution among students, the performance of multiple intelligence, and self-concept of Pingtung County¡¦s aborigine students. 689 subjects from fifth- and six-grade students of aborigines and non-aborigines elementary schools were surveyed through ¡§multiple intelligence critical scale¡¨, and ¡§self-concept scale¡¨. The data was ordered and analyzed through descriptive statistics, one-way MANOVA and canonical correlation one. The findings of the study are¡G 1. On multiple intelligence, both aborigines and non-aborigines of Pingtung County gained similar higher scores, with equal performances on the eight intelligences. Spatial intelligence was generally superior, while naturalist intelligence inferior. 2. On the Multiple Intelligence Appraisal, there were significant differences between aborigines and non-aborigines. Meanwhile, they both had significant differences level in Multiple Intelligence Appraisal score including logical - mathematic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and intra-personal intelligence with logical-mathematic intelligence of non-aborigines students superior to that of aborigine¡¦s, and the other intelligences of aborigines superior to those of the non-aborigine¡¦s. 3. Among aborigines, both PAIWAN and LUKAI races did not show any significant differences in the Multiple Intelligence Appraisal. 4. With reference to the difference sexes, the aborigines students have showed significant differences in the Multiple Intelligence Appraisal score. Female students were significantly superior to male students on certain kinds of intelligence such as linguistic intelligence, musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, intra-personal, and naturalist intelligence in the Multiple Intelligence Appraisal score. 5. Aborigines students who live in different areas also showed significant differences on the Multiple Intelligence Appraisal score. City aborigines were superior to those of mountain and country on logical - mathematic intelligence, linguistic intelligence spatial intelligence musical intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, and intra-personal intelligence in the Multiple Intelligence Appraisal score. 6. As to the relation of the Multiple Intelligence and self-concept of aborigines, the higher the interpersonal intelligence and intra-personal intelligence, the stronger of self-esteem and personal competence. The Relationships Between Work Sheets, Thinking Styles, Self-Concept and Technological Creativity among Fifth and Sixth Graders Ping-Huang Chen Abstract The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between worksheets, thinking styles, self-concept and technological creativity among fifth and sixth graders. The participants included 19 teachers and 535 pupils (291 fifth graders and 244 sixth graders) in Taipei and kaohsiung city. The employed instruments were Worksheets Appraisal, Self- Concept Appraisal, Thinking Styles Appraisal. The employed analysis methods were Descriptives, Multivariate Analysis of Variance, and Discriminant Analysis. The findings of this study revealed that (a) grade and gender had significant effects on technological creativity among the fifth and sixth Graders; (b) the teachers¡¦ application of worksheets in instruction, especially in teaching activity and evaluation, contributed to their pupils¡¦ development of technological creativity; (c) the legislative and the judicial thinking style had effects on the pupils¡¦ technological creativity; (d) self-concept, especially that about schools, had effects on the pupils¡¦ technological creativity; and (e) the teachers¡¦ use of worksheets and the pupils¡¦ thinking styles as well as self-concept could effectively predict the ability groups of the pupils¡¦ technological creativity. Finally, some suggestions were proposed for educational authorities, schools, teachers, and future studies.

The black male athlete through the prism of sport : a mixed method study examining identities, academic self-concept and experiences

The Black experience throughout the history sport has engendered significant transformations to the landscape and culture of both sport and society. However, in the present sociocultural climate of intercollegiate athletics, the disproportion of Black male student athletes in the revenue generating high profile sports have a unique experience in sport unlike their athlete and non-athlete counterparts. The uniqueness of these student athletes’ experiences exists in the ways in which they figure to negotiate their Blackness and their roles as an athlete and student contextualized within the current racial climate of sport culture. There remains a gap in existing literature and research of the conditions and lived experiences of Black student athletes concerning the developmental process of racial identity and its relationship with their athletic identities and academic self-concepts. The present research addresses this gap of knowledge about these stakeholders (i.e. the Black male student athlete) in sport by conducting a mix-methods study exploring the issues of identities, academic self-concept, and developing a deeper understanding based on the experiential knowledge of participants. The relationships between racial and athletic identity and academic self-concept were examined with a participant sample of Black male college football players at Division 1-A universities (N=255). Additionally, a qualitative instrumental case study grounded by Critical Race Theory explored the experiences and perceptions of eleven Black male student athletes participating in high profile athletic programs at predominately White institutions. The research findings indicate at least partial evidence of a relationship between pre-encounter assimilationist and miseducation attitudes with academic self-concept mediated by an elevated athletic identity of participants. There were five themes that emerged from the empirical materials. The themes are presented as: Lane Assignments, Allegiance to the Game versus Classroom, Race Matters??, Conformity, and Still at Work. This research illustrates that the identity, academic self-concepts and experiences of the Black male student athlete in college sport is vastly impacted by complex sociocultural systems. Findings suggest intercollegiate athletic support staff should purposefully accommodate the needs and experiences of student athletes with culturally relevant systems of practice to enhance student athlete development. / text

The academic achievement gap is one of the most important areas of inquiry in education today. Racial-ethnic disparities in achievement continue to be persistent at every level—including post-secondary education. Research suggests African American males are particularly likely to disidentify with academics, resulting in a lack of a significant relation between academic self-concept and academic outcomes. Research has found a relationship between racial-ethnic messages that parents give to their children and academic achievement. Further, the student’s gender may impact the types of parental messages given. Multiple regression statistical analysis will be used to determine if the relation between academic self-concept and GPA is moderated by parental racial-ethnic socialization, teacher mistrust, and gender. / text

Self-concept and online social networking in young adolescents : implications for school counselors

The current report reviews the recent research on online social networking sites (MySpace and Facebook), and their impact on adolescent self-concept and identity development. This paper describes the history and recent expansion of social networking sites, followed by an overview of adolescent identity development. The literature suggests both positive and negative effects of social networking use on adolescent self-concept. Positive effects include the strengthening of group identity, the benefits of self-expression, and the ability to reinforce social relationships. On the other hand, negative effects include an intensified discrepancy between one’s ideal and actual selves, false representations of the self, and the risks involved with online disclosure. The relationship between personality factors and social networking use is also explored. Finally included are implications of this research for school counselors working with adolescents growing up in the digital age. / text
