This study was designed to investigate the relationship between height and self-esteem, and to examine the mediating effects of self-consciousness. Four hundred and seventy-nine college students, 143 males and 336 females, 75% under the age of 21, were administered The Personal Opinion Survey which consisted of demographic information, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Elkind and Bowen's Imaginary Audience Scale. Findings revealed a nonlinear relationship between height and self-esteem. Further, self-consciousness emerged as a significant mediator of the relationship between height and self-esteem, accounting for the difference in male and female self-esteem scores. Moreover, the influence of self-consciousness on the height and self-esteem relationship was revealed greatest for females.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo a análise dos espaços e suas influências no modo de ser das personagens principais do romance Ensaio sobre a cegueira, de José Saramago. Para tanto, analisaremos as diferentes tipologias espaciais no romance, ou seja, espaços interiores, exteriores, ínferos e labirínticos e sua importância quanto ao desenvolvimento do tema proposto pelo narrador. De início, apresentamos um breve estudo sobre a tipologia espacial e sua importância para o estudo da narrativa; em seguida, analisamos os espaços ínferos na obra tendo como foco o manicômio e a igreja; depois, examinamos os espaços labirínticos das ruas, da cidade e do supermercado; posteriormente, estudamos os espaços horizontais e verticais como as casas de algumas personagens centrais. Além disso, tratamos menipéia como expediente que contribui para a formação da autoconsciência das personagens e revela o hibridismo do texto. / The aim of this work is to present an analysis of the space and its influence over the way of being of the main characters in José Saramago\'s work Ensaio sobre a cegueira. We will analyse the different spatial typology in the novel, it means, interior, exterior, inferior and labyrinthic spaces and their importance to the development of the narrator\'s proposed theme. From the beginning, we present a brief study of the spatial typology and its importance to the study of the narrative; subsequently, we analyse the inferior spaces focusing the institution for mentally ill people and the church; moreover, we analyse the labyrinthic spaces of streets, city and supermarket; later, we study the horizontal and vertical spaces such as the houses of some of the main characters. Besides, we deal with menipeia as something that contributes to the formation of the characters\' self-consciousness and reveals the hybridism of the text.

The problem of self-consciousness and recognition is one of the most crucial and central issues in Hegel&rsquo / s Phenomenology of Spirit. The purpose of this study is to expose and investigate this problem in accordance with the unity of Phenomenology through which Hegel examines the experience of consciousness in terms of its own criterion. The emergence of self-consciousness as an explicit issue becomes the truth of movement of consciousness, and self-consciousness essentially takes the form of desire. In this process, self-consciousness evolves from the natural desire to desire for recognition, and recognition by the other arises as the condition of self-consciousness. Besides, the only form of recognition that makes the satisfaction of self-consciousness or desire possible is the reciprocal recognition. Hegel exposes consciousness&rsquo / experience of recognition as the struggle for recognition and the dialectic of master and slave. On the other hand, the process of recognition in the Phenomenology does not culminate in the master-slave dialectic or in the liberation of slave. Rather, the servile consciousness takes another shape that emerges from its contradictory nature and it changes into the freedom of thought. That is, Hegel&rsquo / s concept of recognition cannot be reduced to the master-slave dialectic / the process of recognition persists in the subsequent movement of consciousness and it evolves into certain recognitive relations in the &lsquo / Spirit&rsquo / . For this reason, the problem of self-consciousness and recognition has a determining or constitutive role through the whole movement of consciousness in the Phenomenology.

Drawn on a self-concept theory, this study hypothesized that self-leadership partly mediated between charismatic leadership and organizational commitment and self-leadership fully mediated between private self-consciousness and organizational commitment. The results indicated that charismatic leadership and private self-consciousness were positively related to self-leadership. The predictive validity of private self-consciousness for self-leadership was greater than the one of charismatic leadership. Moreover, the influence of charismatic leadership on identification or internalization was partly mediated by self-leadership. The influence of private self-consciousness on identification was fully mediated by self-leadership. However, the effect of private self-consciousness on internalization was not transmitted by self-leadership. The surprising result was explained and interpreted as evidence for the distinction between internalization and identification. Finally, further research was encouraged to identify and assess alternative subordinate processes in relation to the activation of individual and collective identity by charismatic leaders.
