On sensory experience of historic architecture : an empirical review of sensory perceptions in historic buildings, aiming to inform their conservation process

Braat, Sylvie Anne Ingrid January 2017 (has links)
This thesis studies people’s sensory perceptions of historic architecture, exploring the physical triggers for such experience, and connecting these with what can and should be maintained through building conservation. Sensory design is a developing field in architecture. The research argues that this approach can inform people’s understanding of the architectural experience of historic buildings, which in current discourse are predominantly considered for their associated ‘cultural significances’. People’s affinity to (historic) buildings is initiated by a response through the senses. This research advocates that establishing the triggers for such sensory response should be the main focus of the initial assessment of a building for conservation. From the review of changing approaches to building conservation, and exploration of sensory perception and sensory design, the research concludes people’s experiential perceptions have not been structurally considered in the appraisal of historic buildings. The methodology entailed the empirical development of a suitable assessment format, through performing initial on-site surveys that generated data to be added to those of a final sensory assessment, covering three buildings. Buildings were assessed according to Gibson’s sensory systems of visual, auditory, haptic, olfactory/gustatory and orientational perception, as well as with a comprehensive multisensory focus. Evidence from the data retrieved through this research indicates that the sensory assessment is a useful, informative and exciting addition to any architectural survey in building conservation practice. Such rich information will provide guidance and clarity to decision processes, to assist in retaining the affinity as the building’s physical relevance for the future. The research makes an original contribution to knowledge through the combination of two areas of study; through the application of sensory perception to understand historic buildings; and, in demonstrating that a sensory assessment has true potential as a suitable approach to the issue in practice.

“The Problem of the Extension of the Eidetic World: Republic VII and Parmenides” / El problema de la extensión del ámbito eidético: Parménides y República VII

Sheing, Mario 10 April 2018 (has links)
For some of Plato’s commentators some passages of the Republic and the Parmenides provide a clear guideline regarding the extension of the noetic “world”, namely, a criterion that allows us to know what kind of Platonic forms there are, and which there are not. There are forms only for a pair of opposite properties such as “big” and “small”; indeed, smallness itself is not what appears to the senses, since each sensible instance of smallness appears “mixed” with its opposite, bigness. On the contrary, things that are perceived by the senses such as fingers, do not have an eidos. However, a more careful reading of the relevant passages, taking into account what Socrates says in 476a about the unity and multiplicity of the forms, will show us the incorrectness of this interpretation.

BALADOVÁ, Barbora January 2018 (has links)
This thesis "Walking in the Nature" is devided into two parts. Teoretical part is called "Walking in the nature" and practical part is videoart. Thesis developes theme of human nature and reacts to this from the creative work point of view, which is based on the filosofy and antropology. Teoretical part is focused on development of two concepts, nature and human nature. It deals with human evolution and society in space we live and how it affects us. Practical output reacts on contemporary trends in enviromental creation. All senses, which are priority in this work I recorded in short video, cut into a silent shot.

Many exiting instruments are questionnaires for parents, and most of them focus on children, therefore little is known about sensory perception in adults. Given the lack of brazilian intruments to evaluate the hability of sensory processing and questionnaires that can access the real experience of who lives this reality, this study aims to translate to brazilian portuguese and culturally adapt the Sensory Perception Quotient, an instrument of self report that can access sensory reactivity in adults, evaluating five basic modalities, that can be hypo or hyper –reactive, avoiding value judgment. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to translate to brazilian portuguese and adapt culturally to the brazilian culture of the Sensory Perception Quotient, conducting a study within a scope of a non-experimental non-longitudinal descriptive research, and the following steps: translation, back-translation, revision by a specialist comittee on analysis, evaluation of he scoring and the verification of the instrument’s internal consistency. Sample was constituied of 87 participants, ages 18 to 52 years. The results obtained by the application of total questionnaire translated and adapted, already modified in 53 questions in relation to it’s original version, aloud to notice that it is understandable and shows intern consistency little under of desirable, having only the short version with desirable intern consistency. These observations indicate that the search for evidence of validy of the short version of the instrument, realized through new researches, with other applications of the translated version and adapted in this study, will make it possible to applicate in Brazil. Is recommened caution with full questionnaire in the disscution part of this study.

A proposta foi avaliada experimentalmente em ambiente real, contemplou a detecção de obstáculos e a identificação de descontinuidades / Abstract: This thesis was proposed to demonstrate the study and development of a Perception System based on the utilization of a LIDAR telemetric sensors. It was proposed to create a LMS-3D three dimension laser scanning platform, in an attempt to promote the Autonomous Robot Navigation. The scanned area was obtained based on telemetric maps, which was characterized with Occupancy Grid algorithms (OG) (in two dimensions with the third colored and 3D) and Vector Gradients calculation. Two different navigation areas were characterized: (i) primary area of navigation, that represents the free area inside a OG, and (ii) continuous navigation area, that represents the navigated area composed by the sum of continuous areas and the gradients classified by a determined threshold, which indicates the possible navigated area, based on the robot characteristics. The proposition of this thesis was evaluated in a real environment and was able to identify the obstacles detection and also the discontinuance / Doutorado / Mecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto Mecanico / Doutor em Engenharia Mecânica

Temporal modulations of contact force during haptic surface exploration

Müller, Stephanie, Martin, Sven, Schwarz, Michael, Grunwald, Martin January 2016 (has links)
Individuals constantly modulate their exploratory movements and adapt their internal hypotheses to incoming sensory information to achieve a thorough and realistic percept. Perception depends on the exploratory movements as well as influencing them. While this seems to be common sense, scientifically we know very little about the temporal dynamics during haptic exploration. To address this, we investigated the exploratory force modulations of two groups of healthy young adults during the exploration of grated surfaces with differing detection difficulty during successive (n = 20) and random stimulus presentation (n = 20). Results showed that exploratory force depended on stimulus properties and increased with increasing detection difficulty. Both experiments yielded the same direction of results with slightly smaller effects in the random stimulus presentation group. Across exploration time average fingertip force also increased. The biggest increase occurred systematically at the beginning (within the first 40 percent) of exploration time per stimulus indicating that most critical information is received during the initial contact phase and is directly transformed into the exploration procedure and force application. Furthermore, video-analyses and comparisons to our high temporal resolution data revealed strong dynamic changes in pressure application during test stimulus exploration with differences in the force dynamics and exploration strategies of simple and difficult stimuli.

Smyslový zážitek ve výtvarné výchově / Sensory experience in art education

Písařová, Zuzana January 2016 (has links)
The diploma thesis is called "Sensory experience in art education." The theoretical part explores sensory perception through the knowledge of philosophy, psychology and art theory. It contains examples of the art works of the selected artists. It also deals with the content of RVP in relation to sensory perception and didactics of art education, with a specific purpose of designing an art project in art education. The essence of the didactic part is to devise an art project with the focus on human senses. Each of the tasks is centred on one of the senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. This project is further tested in practice with the help of the second grade students of elementary school and high school. The results are then analysed and evaluated. The amended form of the project can be currently used by art teachers. The selected tasks are the basis for the creative, authorial process of art work, which reflects the effect of the tasks and develops the students' further abilities.

Relationships among unpalatable oral stimuli, saliva, repeated exposure, and sensory acceptance

Lissa Davis (15278209) 17 April 2023 (has links)

Sensory perception and acceptance of disliked healthy foods can be improved through strategies such as repeated exposure. Yet, minimal work has investigated whether these approaches are effective in adult populations. Further, for interventions that do demonstrate modifications of perception or acceptance, we lack understanding of the full spectrum of contributing factors influencing the improvement of the sensory experience. For example, animal data suggest that factors such as saliva and salivary proteins are modifiable by diet and play a direct role in the perception of aversive bitter and astringent compounds, but minimal work has verified this in humans. Additionally, we know that there are myriad barriers and facilitators to healthy food consumption, but there are few investigations of these factors related to empirical assessments of liking. The work presented in this dissertation begins to address these gaps using untrained participants within a general student-aged adult population. We tested effects of repeated consumption of a bitter flavanol “tea” on bitterness intensity and salivary protein composition, demonstrating reduced bitterness intensity after repeated oral sensory exposure of the flavanol, with limited alterations in salivary protein composition attributable to flavanol exposure alone. Next, in a separate intervention, we tested the effect of repeated vegetable flavor exposure within a novel exposure matrix on liking of green vegetables. Using a game that challenged players to identify flavors in vegetable flavored gummy candies, we showed that repeated exposure using this method increased liking of initially disliked chopped vegetables. In a subsequent secondary analysis of data collected during this intervention, we identified variables related to sensory perception, food attitudes and behaviors, and other individual factors that explained variation in vegetable liking in ways that were unique between vegetables, underscoring the complexity of liking. Other chapters included in this dissertation accentuate these complexities through a methodological lens, providing evidence that stimuli choice, study population, and questionnaire design can all significantly impact results from sensory evaluations. Overall, repeated exposure is a promising strategy to help alleviate taste-related barriers to healthy eating in adults but is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Future work should investigate the generalizability of these methods in different adult populations and investigate impacts on dietary intake.
