Mary Magdalene in the era of Reformation

Arnold, Margaret Lois 12 March 2016 (has links)
Scholarly surveys of the medieval Magdalene tend to conclude at the opening of the sixteenth century, dismissing any role she may have had in the teaching of Protestant reformers. Protestant and Catholic attitudes towards sanctity and sainthood have been the object of scholarly work, but my dissertation is the first comparative examination of the different confessions' uses of the Magdalene tradition through the early modern period. Mary Magdalene was of one of several scriptural women to whom Protestants in Germany, France, Switzerland, and England referred in debating the legitimacy of female and lay preaching. Lutheran and Reformed pastors, Anabaptists, and Quakers all adapted the medieval Magdalene tradition to advance Evangelical theologies of the forgiveness of sins, the sacraments, and the priesthood of all believers. Early modern women also seized on these possibilities, claiming for themselves the Magdalene's title as preacher and devoted disciple of the Word. The Catholic cult of the Magdalene shifted as well, serving the needs of the Catholic Reformation. In reaction to the Protestant specter of lay and female preaching, male authors in their sermons and devotional work set aside earlier descriptions of the Magdalene as "apostle to the apostles" and emphasized instead her identity as a penitent prostitute. Catholic women investigated the Magdalene's relation to her sister Martha to develop new images of female sanctity. As the medieval separation between clergy and laity was questioned, reform-minded Christians both Protestant and Catholic explored new understandings of the shape of Christian life. The Magdalene's call to confess the Gospel was a missionary imperative that transcended the boundaries of the ordained clergy. Similarly, the contemplation of Mary's contemplation and the worldly work of her sister Martha could no longer be divided among different groups, but had to be integrated by each individual. Early modern Christians from Luther to Teresa of Avila discussed the terms of this reconciliation, attempting to understand secular work as a vocation, the fruit and expression of contemplation. What have often been taken to be distinct preoccupations of opponents in reform are revealed to have shared a common dialogue, framed by the life of Mary Magdalene.

Jeferson Andre Samuelsson 18 December 2008 (has links)
This dissertation is about the sermon and its preacher, concerning the writing of the sermon and its delivery. Most pastors write a sermon every week. This is a very important work that requires a lot of study, meditation, preparation and oral delivery. Therefore this dissertation is divided in three parts. The first chapter addresses the sermon and what is implied in its construction. There is a reflection about Homiletics as the area of Theology that is connected with the proclamation of God‟s word. We present the contributions of some homiletics scholars and pastors that investigated the subject with a deep love for their flock. The second chapter is about the sermon and its linguistic aspects, that is, its features as seen from a linguistic viewpoint in terms of text, speaker and language. Finally, the third chapter describes the methodology utilized and the analysis of the sermons.

Retórica e religiosidade em cena: as moralidades de Gil Vicente / Rhetoric and religiosity on scene: the moralities of Gil Vicente

Luciana Barbosa Reis 27 March 2013 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the vincentian moralities from rhetoric precepts found in Aristotle's The Art of Rhetoric and latin rhetoric in order to observe possible points of identification of morality with medieval sermons. Therefore, investigates how the rhetoric influenced the various treaties that guided the production of preaching sermons in the period. Knowledge of rhetorical techniques, whether in its old formulation, or their updates, shows an important means of interpretation not only of persuasive strategies of morals, but also in understanding the deeper meaning of the text. The vincentian corpus of interest for this research was delimited and organized from the distinction of epideictic, deliberative and judicial speeches concerning the identification of values and arguments prevalent in the autos analyzed, namely: the exaltation of the virtues and the Virgin in the autos of Fé and Mofina Mendes, and the advantages of speeches aimed at deliberation in the autos of Alma and Feira, as well as argumentative construction in the dialogue of the characters who accuse/argue in the autos of Barca do Inferno and Purgatório

Go Make Disciples: Sermonic Application of the Imperative of the Great Commission

Gilbert, Scott 02 January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation argues in light of a careful hermeneutic of application that preaching the Great Commission necessitates exhorting every believer in the congregation to go and engage intentionally in both evangelism and discipling less mature believers among all the nations of the earth. Chapter 1 states the thesis and explains the need for this study. Chapter 2 establishes the hermeneutic of application used in the dissertation. Rather than principlization, this chapter argues for the advantageous use of Abraham Kuruvilla’s conceptualization of the world in front of the text for determining sermonic application. Chapter 3 begins the interpretive analysis of verse 19 by attempting to answer the question of for whom the Great Commission is intended. After summarizing five main views, the chapter argues that Matthew intends the imperative to apply to every believer; this conclusion derives not only from interpretation of the pericope, but also from Matthew’s overall narrative and rhetorical purpose in the gospel. Chapter 4 seeks to answer three remaining exegetical decisions which are necessary before determining contemporary application: what Matthew means by “make disciples,” the best translation of πορευθέντες, and the meaning of πάντα τὰ ἔθνη. Using linguistic analysis, rhetorical criticism, and narrative criticism, the chapter concludes that Matthew’s conceptualization of “make disciples” involves both evangelism and discipling less mature believers, πορευθέντες has an imperatival function, and πάντα τὰ ἔθνη includes both Jews and Gentiles. Chapter 5 takes the conclusions drawn from chapters 3 and 4 to explain the transhistorical intentions and contemporary exemplifications that a preacher may extrapolate from Matthew’s intended meaning. The imperative is for every believer, obedience requires intentionality, disciple-making includes both evangelism and discipling less mature believers, and the context is both one’s community and the nations. The final chapter summarizes the preceding material and offers a brief explanation of how a preacher can apply this passage in a sermon. It also suggests additional lines of inquiry for further study of preaching the pericope. In order to further illustrate the homiletical implications of the conclusions of this dissertation, an appendix provides a sample sermon of Matthew 28:16-20.

Preaching in a Lamenting Mode Easter Lockdown Sermons in the Netherlands

Verweij, André 31 August 2021 (has links)
As the COVID-19 pandemic brought fear and anxiety to people around the world, the Christian community is called to give witness to her hope in the risen Lord. Preaching is a major channel of this witness. The analysis of five Easter sermons, preached in April 2020 by pastors of the Protestant Church in the Netherlands, brings to the fore how an alarming contextual situation weighs in on the tone and content of Easter preaching in local churches. A lamenting mode of preaching was found, that voices local communities’ distress and strengthens hope, repeating the salvific message of Easter in the face of bewilderment and suffering. The analysis underscores and adds to homiletical theory on lament in preaching.

L’esthétique du faire croire : étude littéraire des sermons français et latins de Jean Gerson / The art of creating faith : litterary study of John Gerson’s french and latin sermons.

Griveau-Genest, Viviane 05 July 2017 (has links)
In spite of a wide range of studies, the chancellor of the university of Paris Jean Gerson (1363-1429) remains quite unknow as a litterary author and his texts are mainly read in a theological or historical way. Thus, this study will focuse on a rhetorical and stylistic approach of the texts so that they can be understood in a litterary frame. Allegorical devices, images but also auctorial strategies are some of the elements that show the integration of court culture in the homely. In the same time, we will try to consider in a new way Jean Gerson’s role and place in the intellectual context of late Middle Ages.
