Trust-based service selection and recommendation for online software marketplaces – TruSStReMark

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation proposes a framework (TruSStReMark - Trust-based Service Selection and Recommendation for Online Software Marketplaces) to model, quantify, and monitor trust of software services and to perform trust-based service selection and recommendations. It provides methods to analyze and aggregate external reviews, pertaining to specific QoS attributes, of software services by performing subjective logic-based operations. This framework, first, defines trust of a software service using theory of belief and extends the multi-level software specifications to represent the trust-based attributes. It, then, proposes enhancements to two prevalent algorithms for selecting and recommending software services from a marketplace. Finally, the performances of the enhanced selection and recommendation algorithms are improved by parallelizing them. When compared with the prevalent Content-based and Collaborative filtering-based approaches, the results show that, the TruSStReMark is able to produce better results in terms of quality measured using HR (Hit Ratio) and ARHR (Average Reciprocal Hit-Rank) metrics. In addition, the parallelized versions of the trust-based selection and recommendation algorithms improve the end-to-end runtime. The TruSStReMark will enable users to select services, which are trustworthy, from online software marketplaces and use them in composing quality-aware distributed systems.

Improved Selection Support of Transport Services in Intermodal Transportation

In intermodal freight transport context, the selection process of appropriated transport services that fit with user requirements is a big challenge, this master thesis project analyze different alternatives to improve that process based on reputation information of transport providers. Reputation is a social abstract concept which is analyzed in this research establishing a categorization of reputation parameters in the freight transportation context. Using this categorization is proposed two different architectures of reputation systems to manage the sources and processing of this kind of data. This project is based on a framework to develop generic system architecture for intermodal transport management based on previous European efforts.

Service recommendation and selection in centralized and decentralized environments

With the increasing use of web services in everyday tasks we are entering an era of Internet of Services (IoS). Service discovery and selection in both centralized and decentralized environments have become a critical issue in the area of web services, in particular when services having similar functionality but different Quality of Service (QoS). As a result, selecting a high quality service that best suits consumer requirements from a large list of functionally equivalent services is a challenging task. In response to increasing numbers of services in the discovery and selection process, there is a corresponding increase of service consumers and a consequent diversity in Quality of Service (QoS) available. Increases in both sides leads to a diversity in the demand and supply of services, which would result in the partial match of the requirements and offers. Furthermore, it is challenging for customers to select suitable services from a large number of services that satisfy consumer functional requirements. Therefore, web service recommendation becomes an attractive solution to provide recommended services to consumers which can satisfy their requirements. In this thesis, first a service ranking and selection algorithm is proposed by considering multiple QoS requirements and allowing partially matched services to be counted as a candidate for the selection process. With the initial list of available services the approach considers those services with a partial match of consumer requirements and ranks them based on the QoS parameters, this allows the consumer to select suitable service. In addition, providing weight value for QoS parameters might not be an easy and understandable task for consumers, as a result an automatic weight calculation method has been included for consumer requirements by utilizing distance correlation between QoS parameters. The second aspect of the work in the thesis is the process of QoS based web service recommendation. With an increasing number of web services having similar functionality, it is challenging for service consumers to find out suitable web services that meet their requirements. We propose a personalised service recommendation method using the LDA topic model, which extracts latent interests of consumers and latent topics of services in the form of probability distribution. In addition, the proposed method is able to improve the accuracy of prediction of QoS properties by considering the correlation between neighbouring services and return a list of recommended services that best satisfy consumer requirements. The third part of the thesis concerns providing service discovery and selection in a decentralized environment. Service discovery approaches are often supported by centralized repositories that could suffer from single point failure, performance bottleneck, and scalability issues in large scale systems. To address these issues, we propose a context-aware service discovery and selection approach in a decentralized peer-to-peer environment. In the approach homophily similarity was used for bootstrapping and distribution of nodes. The discovery process is based on the similarity of nodes and previous interaction and behaviour of the nodes, which will help the discovery process in a dynamic environment. Our approach is not only considering service discovery, but also the selection of suitable web service by taking into account the QoS properties of the web services. The major contribution of the thesis is providing a comprehensive QoS based service recommendation and selection in centralized and decentralized environments. With the proposed approach consumers will be able to select suitable service based on their requirements. Experimental results on real world service datasets showed that proposed approaches achieved better performance and efficiency in recommendation and selection process.

Investigation of service selection algorithms for grid services

Grid computing has emerged as a global platform to support organizations for coordinated sharing of distributed data, applications, and processes. Additionally, Grid computing has also leveraged web services to define standard interfaces for Grid services adopting the service-oriented view. Consequently, there have been significant efforts to enable applications capable of tackling computationally intensive problems as services on the Grid. In order to ensure that the available services are assigned to the high volume of incoming requests efficiently, it is important to have a robust service selection algorithm. The selection algorithm should not only increase access to the distributed services, promoting operational flexibility and collaboration, but should also allow service providers to scale efficiently to meet a variety of demands while adhering to certain current Quality of Service (QoS) standards. In this research, two service selection algorithms, namely the Particle Swarm Intelligence based Service Selection Algorithm (PSI Selection Algorithm) based on the Multiple Objective Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm using Crowding Distance technique, and the Constraint Satisfaction based Selection (CSS) algorithm, are proposed. The proposed selection algorithms are designed to achieve the following goals: handling large number of incoming requests simultaneously; achieving high match scores in the case of competitive matching of similar types of incoming requests; assigning each services efficiently to all the incoming requests; providing the service requesters the flexibility to provide multiple service selection criteria based on a QoS metric; selecting the appropriate services for the incoming requests within a reasonable time. Next, the two algorithms are verified by a standard assignment problem algorithm called the Munkres algorithm. The feasibility and the accuracy of the proposed algorithms are then tested using various evaluation methods. These evaluations are based on various real world scenarios to check the accuracy of the algorithm, which is primarily based on how closely the requests are being matched to the available services based on the QoS parameters provided by the requesters.

Design and Implementation of a Service Discovery and Recommendation Architecture for SaaS Applications

Increasing number of software vendors are offering or planning to offer their applications as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) to leverage the benefits of cloud computing and Internet-based delivery. Therefore, potential clients will face increasing number of providers that satisfy their requirements to choose from. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for automating such a time-consuming and error-prone task. In this work, we develop an architecture for automated service discovery and selection in cloud computing environment. The system is based on an algorithm that recommends service choices to users based on both functional and non-functional characteristics of available services. The system also derives automated ratings from monitoring results of past service invocations to objectively detect badly-behaving providers. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using an early prototype that was developed following object-oriented methodology and implemented using various open-source Java technologies and frameworks. The prototype uses a Chord DHT as its distributed backing store to achieve scalability.

Verification of Web Services in Support of Choreography

In recent years, Web services had been widely used on the Internet. Thanks to the convenient communication technologies and their inexpensive cost, communications between organizations is much easier, and Web services have become a de-facto standard for organizations to provide information and services. There are two different perspectives to describe Web service composition: orchestration and choreography. Works that verify a choreography model so as to alleviating some correctness problem such as deadlock have also been proposed. However the verification of implementations based on a choreography model has not be addressed. In this thesis, we propose an approach to verify the conformance of a set of Web services to a given choreography model and prune some candidate Web services which do not comply with the choreography model to avoid discordance with the choreography model and run-time errors. The proposed approach is evaluated by simulating 10,000 execution sequences of composite Web services. The experimental results show that our proposed method improves the performance of success rate and space usage by pruning the unsuitable candidate Web services.

Web Service Composition and Selection Using Query Rewriting and Bayesian Network

Web services can be broadly classified into two types, namely effect providing (EP) services and data providing (DP) services. In this work, we address DP service composition problem that intends to satisfy user preference specified at the instance level, namely the expected occurrence. We first use the query rewriting method to identify a composition of service types that satisfies user¡¦s requirement and employ Bayesian Network model to express the causal relationship between exchange variables of DP service types. Service selection is then conducted by computing the posterior probability in the Bayesian Network. We conduct experiments to show that our proposed Bayesian Network-based method outperforms the other baseline methods in terms of execution success rate and data quality. It also has reasonable execution time.

A £k-calculus Based Approach for Web Services Composition in Choreography Environment

Nowadays, Web Services technology has become a standard to integrate business processes across organizations. In general, there are two approaches for web service composition: Orchestration and Choreography. Orchestration is used to develop a single process that integrates services within or across an organization to achieve a business goal. On the other hand, Choreography is often used for cross-organizational communication and serves as a specification for communication. In a choreographed environment, each Web service is an independent entity, and each service selects the partner services using its own selection policy without knowing all the other services in the choreography. In this thesis, we use £k-calculus for modeling the Web Services. Afterwards, we propose an approach for each constituent process to choose and invoke other processes using the limited information provided by its partners. In our method, each service proclaims the requirments of its potential service providers (or consumers) and itself and provides to its partners. Subsequently each service will generate a local view using the information provided by its service consumers and providers to guide the selection. We evaluate our method by simulating 100,000 executions with different degrees of service availability. The experimental results indicate that our proposed method can indeed improve the success rate of the entire choreography.
