The main objective was to identify relevant aspects of knowledge production about this theme, such as: main research centers, prevailing theoretical and methodological models, most frequent focus of studies, conceptions about the practice of the psychologist facing the demands raised by homosexualities. The theoretical perspectives adopted to transit through the field of homosexualities in Psychology were supported by Foucault and authors who dialogue with his work, and also the contributions of the gender studies. The Foucaultian genealogical methodology guided the investigative paths of this study, laying the foundations to the systematization of the data from the format of a state of art research, mapping a knowledge area from a temporal and thematic cutting. The results found indicated that the researches about the homosexualities are predominantly conducted in post-graduation programs located in the southeast/south axis of the country; in the period studied there was a growth in the number of thesis and dissertations about the theme; there are sub-themes related to homosexualities that stood out in the amount of researches, which are: the family-marital, the homosexual identity and the prejudice-discrimination. The analysis of the collected data indicated that the conceptions about homosexualities in Psychology did not present an essentialist bias, nor a biologizing one, and neither were guided by the investigation of the causes of the homosexual behavior or desire. There was a predominance of Foucaultian referential in what regards the sexuality from the concept of the apparatus of sexuality. It was also noticed a prevalence of references to the category of identity as a way to map, name...

The roles of power and gender as determinants of affective responses to intimate conflict

Strachan, Catherine Elizabeth January 1987 (has links)
There is a paucity of research studying variables which influence emotional reactions in response to conflict between intimates. The present study examined the roles of power and gender as determinants of affective response to audiotaped scenarios of intimate conflict. Sixty male and 60 female subjects were randomly assigned as either a group leader (high power condition) or group member (low power condition) for the performance of a group task. After receiving their group assignments, subjects completed an affect check list and then listened to an audiotape of a heated conflict between a man and a woman concerning sexual jealousy. Two tapes were presented to control for gender of initiator (i.e., who started the conflict) so that subjects heard either a male-initiated or a female-initiated conflict. After exposure to the conflict stimulus, subjects again completed an affect check list. It was hypothesized that subjects in the high power condition would report more anger than those in the low power condition. In addition, participants in the low power condition would report more anxiety than participants in the high power condition. Also, men were predicted to report more anger than women and women more anxiety than men. The highest anger ratings were found for participants in the low power condition listening to a person of the opposite gender initiate the conflict. This difference was significant for females, although a similar pattern for males was not. Furthermore, an interaction effect was found, with females who had listened to a female-initiated conflict in the high power condition reporting more anger than those in the low power condition, a response pattern that was in the opposite direction to the other three groups. A main effect was found for power, with participants in the low power condition reporting more anger than their high power counterparts. In addition, the results partially supported the hypothesis-regarding anxiety, with subjects in the low power condition reporting significantly more anxiety than those in the high power condition. These results, however, were limited to the male-initiated conflict. A significant gender difference was found for both the anger and anxiety ratings with women reporting more of both affect clusters than men. The results support the basic contention that power and gender are important determinants of affective responses to intimate conflict. The results are discussed in terms of the expectations and cognitions created by power and gender stereotypes and their influence on the process of labelling emotions within the context of intimate conflict. / Arts, Faculty of / Psychology, Department of / Graduate

A description of practising Christians’ experience of profound sexual and spiritual encounters

MacKnee, Chuck M 05 1900 (has links)
This qualitative study explored the meaning and description of profound sexual and spiritual connection among practising Christians. Investigations of the conditions and events that led to these peak encounters as well as the aftereffects of such experiences were also conducted. It was purposed that this research would enhance understanding of sexual and spiritual connection, inform theories of love, transpersonal experience, and Christian theology regarding sexuality, as well as provide counsellors with some initial strategies to promote more holistic sexual intimacy among their Christian clientele. The methods of inquiry and data analysis were based on a phenomenological approach. The researcher conducted an in-depth interview with five men and five women, representing five Christian denominations, who had experienced a profound event that was simultaneously sexual and spiritual. The statements within each participant's transcript were analyzed to discover clusters of meaningful themes. A follow-up interview with each contributor validated these individual or "situated structural" descriptions. Twenty-five common themes emerged from the interview data and a fundamental structure or "common story" was culled from the exhaustive description of the phenomenon. The themes of the sexual and spiritual encounter were categorized into the into the following three phases: Preconditions and Facilitating Events; Descriptive Themes of the Encounter; and Aftereffects. The exhaustive description and fundamental structure were validated by all the participants in a final follow-up consultation. The study results offered an empirical and experiential basis for previous conjectures on linking sexuality and spirituality. The findings were interpreted in light of existing research on love, transpersonal mystical experience, and Christian theology on sexuality. Comparisons were made to the experience of transcendental sex experienced by Tantric practitioners. Potentials for individual and relational growth were explored. Following these interpretations, a number of specific recommendations were made for future research and counselling practice. / Education, Faculty of / Educational and Counselling Psychology, and Special Education (ECPS), Department of / Graduate
