The Occult as a Dramatic Device in Shakespearean Tragedy

What this study will demonstrate is that Shakespeare's use of occult manifestations is not as superficial as it is sometimes said to be. On the contrary, it is the contention of this study that, especially in certain of the major tragedies, occult phenomena are integral to the main action, provide the play with essential motivation, and, in fact, are indispensable to a proper resolution.

Perspectives of tragedy in black South African drama : an analysis of selected plays by Zakes Mda, Mbongeni Ngema and Maishe Maponya / Rakgomo Pheto

This dissertation focuses on the nature and manifestation of tragedy within African experience in selected plays written by black South African playwrights. The plays under discussion are We Shall Sing for the Fatherland (1973) by Zakes Mda, The Hungry Earth (1978) by Maishe Maponya, and Sarafina (1985) by Mbongeni Ngema. The many conflicting statements regarding the "death" and existence of tragedy in contemporary drama lead one to ask the following two fundamental questions: Can there be tragedy in contemporary South African drama and what structural devices are there to account for the manifestation of this elusive phenomenon? This dissertation works towards defining the concept of an African vision of tragedy by examining the nature and form in which tragedy manifests itself in South African drama. Secondly, it considers the extent to which this phenomenon is similar or different from conventional elements and structural forms of Western tragic drama. This dissertation argues that there exists a distinct and viable vision of tragedy in black South African drama which can be called African. It contends that dramatic texts do not all have the same degree of profundity of tragic vision because their subject matter, techniques and depth of artistic exploration differ, and vary according to their cultural roots. The basis on which old forms of tragedy are used to interpret the version of contemporary tragedy is therefore called into question, and as a result, the analysis of structural forms and thematic preoccupations of contemporary tragedy needs a set of criteria different from that of Euro-American drama. The portrayal of a tragic hero as a common man whose tragic stature is measured in terms of his ability to feel, to be aware of forces closing down on him in The Hungry Earth, the manifestation of tragedy as generated not only by individual volition, but by an economic structure established by those in power in We Shall Sing for the Fatherland, and, finally, the mingling of tragicomic elements of entertainment and communication to accommodate both tragedy and comic elements without destroying the integrity of either in Sarafina, indicate a definite development and imitation of tragedy from emphasis on form to meaning. By asking a question like: "What constitutes tragedy in black South African drama, and how are such processes represented and modelled in the selected plays?" this dissertation enters into a dialogue of global and local perspectives of tragedy in order to contribute to our understanding of an African, and specifically South African, concept of tragedy firmly rooted in its socio-cultural context. / Thesis (M.A. (English))--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2003.

This thesis is an examination of reader or audience response to Shakespeare’s tragedies. Primarily, it identifies key pleasures that Shakespeare’s King Lear and Othello offer. The complementary nature of these two plays is such that the analysis of their various pleasures allows for an in-depth treatment of the topic and also reflects the diversity of emotional response elicited by Shakespeare’s tragedies. The kinds of pleasure addressed in this study are catharsis as explained by Aristotle, the delight of violent passion as advocated by DuBos, pleasure from details in the work, satisfaction from the coherence of the tragedy, and pleasure in the idealization of tragedy.

That is why it has generated the most varied artistic adaptations. In dance, Romeo and Juliet has been translated mainly into the language of classical ballet. Within this context, this work aims to analyze the play s process of transmutation into the language of classical dance. The object of this work, was produced by The Royal Ballet in 1965, and choreographed by Kenneth MacMillan. The theoreticians who guided our work in the field of adaptation studies are Gérard Genette (2010), Julie Sanders (2006; 2007) and Linda Hutcheon (2011); in the field of the performing arts, Patrice Pavis (2008a; 2008b; 2010); and, for the purpose of analysis, in the field of semiotic studies, the intersemiotic translation theory proposed by Roman Jakobson (2010). Thus, the aim of this work is to understand the transformations the play has undergone in the process of becoming a choreographic production, focusing on the following elements: costumes, scenery, props, lighting, movement and gestures. / Romeu e Julieta, de William Shakespeare, pode ser considerada como a maior história de amor de todos os tempos e, por este motivo, foi adaptada para diversas linguagens artísticas. Na área da dança, Romeu e Julieta foi traduzida principalmente para a linguagem do balé clássico. Neste contexto, este trabalho visa a analisar o processo de transmutação do texto teatral Romeu e Julieta para a linguagem da dança clássica. O objeto de estudo desta pesquisa é a versão que foi produzida pela The Royal Ballet, em 1965, com coreografia de Kenneth MacMillan. Os teóricos norteadores deste trabalho no campo dos estudos de adaptação são Gérard Genette (2010), Julie Sanders (2006; 2007) e Linda Hutcheon (2011); nas artes cênicas, Patrice Pavis (2008a; 2008b; 2010); e, no campo dos estudos semióticos, para efeito de análise, utilizou-se a teoria de tradução intersemiótica proposta por Roman Jakobson (2010). The Shakespearean Stahr : Using Genette’s Theory of Intertextuality to Compare The Last Tycoon to Shakespeare’s Tragedies

This essay uses Gerard Genette’s theory of intertextuality – in particular, architextuality - in order to establish the connection between Shakespearean tragedies and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last novel, The Last Tycoon. The essay relies mainly on known Shakespeare critic A.C Bradley and the categories he uses in order to establish what makes a Shakespearean tragedy a Shakespearean tragedy. This framework will then be used to further elaborate upon the architextual connection between Shakespeare and Fitzgerald. The essay also compares the characters from The Last Tycoon directly to characters from Shakespeare’s tragedies in order to further show the intertextual connections. For example, Fitzgerald's main character Monroe Stahr is compared to Julius Caesar, from Shakespeare's play of the same name, while the antagonist Mr Brady is compared to both Cassius from the previously mentioned Julius Caesar, as well as Iago from Othello

Counterfactual Thinking and Shakespearean Tragedy: Imagining Alternatives in the Plays

This dissertation is the application of counterfactual criticism to Shakespearean tragedy—supposing we are to ask, for example, “what if” Hamlet had done the deed, or, “what if” we could somehow disinherit our knowledge of Lear’s madness before reading King Lear. Such readings, mirroring critical practices in history, will loosely be called “counterfactual” readings. The key question to ask is not why tragedies are no longer being written (by writers), but why tragedies are no longer being felt (by readers). Tragedy entails a certain urgency in wanting to imagine an outcome different from the one we are given. Since we cannot change events as they stand, we feel a critical helplessness in dealing with feelings of tragic loss; the critical imperative that follows usually accounts for how the tragedy unfolded. Fleshing out a cause is one way to deal with the trauma of tragedy. But such explanation, in a sense, merely explains tragedy away. The fact that everything turns out so poorly in tragedy suggests that the tragic protagonist was somehow doomed, that he (in the case of Shakespearean tragedy) was the victim of some “tragic flaw,” as though tragedy and necessity go hand in hand. Only by allowing ourselves to imagine other possibilities can we regain the tragic effect, which is to remind ourselves that other outcomes are indeed possible. Tragedy, then, is more readily understood, or felt, as the playing out of contingency. It takes some effort to convince others, even ourselves, that the tragic effect resonates best when accompanied by an understanding that the characters on the page are free individuals. No amount of foreknowledge, on our part or theirs, can save us (or them) from tragedy’s horror.
