Examination of sharp force trauma of the Winchester Site remains

The present research examined remains found from the Winchester Site in Winchester, MA that have evidence for postmortem alteration. The author compared the assemblages from Point San Jose (Hart et al. 2019; Willey et al. 2018), Holden Chapel (Hodge 2013; Hodge et al. 2017), Medical College of Georgia (Blakley 1997; McFarlin and Wineski 1997; Terrell and McFarlin 1997), Milwaukee County Institutional Grounds (Dougherty and Sullivan 2017), Newcastle Infirmary (Chamberlain 2016), and Blockley Almshouse (Crist et al. 2017; Hynes 2005) regarding patterns in bone modification and their potential causes. The sawn assemblage consists of 1365 adult remains, 67 juvenile remains, and 13 nonhuman remains. The human adult sawn Winchester Site sample is composed of 19.7% cranial remains and 80.3% postcranial remains. The postmortem alterations found on the remains from the Winchester Site lack pathological changes surrounding them. Eight of the 17 (47.0%) nearly complete crania exhibit evidence for craniotomy. Postmortem trephinations are seen in three crania. Repetition of surgical procedure training is seen through the 349 transverse complete kerfs located on the postcranial remains. There are 125 sternal segments and 133 rib segments with evidence of sharp force trauma, potentially from thoracotomy. The postmortem alteration within the faunal assemblage can be attributed to butchery on the elements from cow, sheep, and unidentified mammal, and dissection on the elements from the dog and red fox. Implements utilized on the skeletal remains were a flat-bladed saw with 18 teeth per inch (TPI) and a trephine. The remains from the Winchester Site exhibit experimentation with kerf locations, most likely originating from surgical training practices.

Correlation between saw blade width and kerf width

Previous studies of saw marks have primarily focused on morphological characteristics and their utility in identifying saws suspected to have been utilized in cases of criminal dismemberment. The present study examined the extent to which metric analysis may be used to correlate saw blades measurements of kerf width. A sample of 56 partially defleshed white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) limbs were utilized as a proxy for human remains. The partial limbs were cut using a variety of commercially available saws, including 11 manual-powered saws and 5 mechanical-powered saws. A total of 500 false start kerfs (FSKs) were measured using digital calipers. Two experiments were performed, with the first test examining the kerf widths of false starts produced on specimens that were restrained using clamps, while the second test analyzed the kerf widths of false starts produced on minimally restrained specimens. Statistical analysis using Hierarchical Linear Modeling indicated a positive relationship between saw blade width (mm) and minimum kerf width (MKW), with the model estimating that MKWs would increase by 1.61 mm for every millimeter increase in blade width. Results from the models indicated that blade width (p<0.001) and the difference between mechanical- and manual-powered saws (p=0.029) were considered statistically significant. A comparison of MKWs produced using manual-powered saws on unrestrained and restrained bones suggests that restraint condition (p=0.009) is statistically significant. In comparisons of MKWs to blade widths, the average ratio for used saws was 2.7% greater than the average ratio for new saws. The mode of the ratios was approximately 1.4, supporting the general rule that MKW does not exceed 1.5 times saw blade width.

Denna studie behandlar fyra individer som kommer från S:t Hans medeltida kyrka i Visby, Gotland. Samtliga av dessa individer uppvisar tydliga indikationer på att de har fallit offer för våldshandlingar av skarpt slag, varav två av dem avrättade. Syftet med studien är att undersöka skadornas natur och orsak, samt att fastställa tidpunkten för dessa händelser och deras motiv. Vidare ägnas uppmärksamhet åt de begravningspraktiker som dessa individer har undergått, och hur dessa kan bidra till vår förståelse av deras identitet. Slutligen diskuteras de avrättades straff i relation till de rättsliga normer som var rådande under medeltiden i Sverige. / This study examines four individuals originating from St. Hans Medieval Church in Visby, Gotland. All individuals exhibit clear indications of having fallen victim to acts of sharp force trauma, two of whom were executed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature and cause of these injuries, as well as to determine the timing and motives behind these events. Furthermore, attention is devoted to the burial rituals these individuals have undergone and how they can contribute to our understanding of their identity. Finally, the punishments inflicted upon the executed individuals are discussed in relation to the legal norms during the medieval period in Sweden.

Weapons, warfare and skeleton injuries during the Iron Age in the Ancient Near East

Due to the nature of war, persons are killed with various types of weapons. Throughout the history of humanity, weapons were used in this regard and these weapons left injuries on the victims that are distinguishable. The type of force conveyed by the ancient weapons effected injuries that enable modern-day bioarchaeologists to extrapolate which weapons caused which injuries. The Assyrians depicted their wars and battles on reliefs. An analysis of these depictions, with an extrapolation of the lesions expected in skeletal remains, could contribute to better understanding of the strategies of war in ancient times. This dissertation will discuss how the evaluation of human remains in comparison to Assyrian reliefs may contribute to the chronological knowledge of war and warfare in the Iron Age Ancient Near East – especially at Lachish.
