Space-Charge Saturation and Current Limits in Cylindrical Drift Tubes and Planar Sheaths

Stephens, Kenneth Frank 08 1900 (has links)
Space-charge effects play a dominant role in many areas of physics. In high-power microwave devices using high-current, relativistic electron beams, it places a limit on the amount of radiation a device can produce. Because the beam's space-charge can actually reflect a portion of the beam, the ability to accurately predict the amount of current a device can carry is needed. This current value is known as the space-charge limited current. Because of the mathematical difficulties, this limit is typically estimated from a one-dimensional theory. This work presents a two-dimensional theory for calculating an upper-bound for the space-charge limited current of relativistic electron beams propagating in grounded coaxial drift tubes. Applicable to annular beams of arbitrary radius and thickness, the theory includes the effect introduced by a finite-length drift tube of circular cross-section. Using Green's second identity, the need to solve Poisson's equation is transferred to solving a Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem, which is easily solved by elementary methods. In general, the resulting eigenvalue, which is required to estimate the limiting current, must be numerically determined. However, analytic expressions can be found for frequently encountered limiting cases. Space-charge effects also produce the fundamental collective behavior found in plasmas, especially in plasma sheaths. A plasma sheath is the transition region between a bulk plasma and an adjacent plasma-facing surface. The sheath controls the loss of particles from the plasma in order to maintain neutrality. Using a fully kinetic theory, the problem of a planar sheath with a single-minimum electric potential profile is investigated. Appropriate for single charge-state ions of arbitrary temperature, the theory includes the emission of warm electrons from the surface as well as a net current through the sheath and is compared to particle-in-cell simulations. Approximate expressions are developed for estimating the sheath potential as well as the transition to space-charge saturation. The case of a space-charge limited sheath is discussed and compared to the familiar Child-Langmuir law.

PLASMA SHEATH CHARACTERIZATION FOR TELEMETRY IN HYPERSONIC FLIGHT

Starkey, Ryan P., Lewis, Mark J., Jones, Charles H. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 20-23, 2003 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / During certain hypersonic flight regimes, shock heating of air creates a plasma sheath resulting in telemetry attenuation or blackout. The severity of the signal attenuation is dependent on vehicle configuration, flight trajectory, and transmission frequency. This phenomenon is investigated with a focus placed on the nonequilibrium plasma sheath properties (electron concentration, plasma frequency, collision frequency, and temperature) for a range of flight conditions and vehicle design considerations. Trajectory and transmission frequency requirements for air-breathing hypersonic vehicle design are then addressed, with comparisons made to both shuttle orbiter and RAM-C II reentry flights.

PLASMA TELEMETRY IN HYPERSONIC FLIGHT

Starkey, Ryan P., Lewis, Mark J., Jones, Charles H. 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 21, 2002 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / Problems associated with telemetry blackout caused by the plasma sheath surrounding a hypersonic vehicle are addressed. In particular, the critical nature of overcoming this limitation for test and evaluation purposes is detailed. Since the telemetry blackout causes great concern for atmospheric cruise vehicles, ballistic missiles, and reentry vehicles, there have been many proposed approaches to solving the problem. This paper overviews aerodynamic design methodologies, for which the required technologies are only now being realized, which may allow for uninterrupted transmission through a plasma sheath. The severity of the signal attenuation is dependent on vehicle configuration, trajectory, flightpath, and mission.

Experimental and Computational Investigation of Thermal-Flow Characteristics of Gas Turbine Reverse-Flow Combustor

Wang, Liang 05 August 2010 (has links)
Reverse-flow combustors have been used in heavy land-based gas turbines for many decades. A sheath is typically installed to provide cooling at an expense of large pressure losses, through small jet impingement cooling and strong forced convention channel flow. With the modern advancement in metallurgy and thermal-barrier coating technologies, it may become possible to remove this sheath to recover the pressure losses without melting the combustor chamber. However, without the sheath, the flow inside the dump diffuser may exert nonuniform cooling on the combustion chamber. Therefore, the objective of this project is to investigate the flow pattern, pressure drop, and heat transfer in the dump-diffuser reverse-flow combustor with and without sheath to determine if the sheath could be removed. The investigation was conducted through both experimental and computational simulation. The results show that 3.3% pressure losses could be recovered and the highest wall temperature will increase 18% without the sheath.

Étude expérimentale d'interactions entre antennes HF et plasma périphérique d'un Tokamak / Experimental study of the interaction between RF antennas and the edge plasma of a tokamak

Kubic, Martin 23 October 2013 (has links)
Enfin, les mesures de RFA dans Tore Supra indiquent que les potentiels RF se propagent au moins jusqu'à de 12m de l'antenne le long de lignes de champ magnétiques / Antennas operating in the ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) provide a useful tool for plasma heating in many tokamaks and are foreseen to play an important role in ITER. However, in addition to the desired heating in the core plasma, spurious interactions with the plasma edge and material boundary are known to occur. Many of these deleterious effects are caused by the formation of radio-frequency (RF) sheaths. The aim of this thesis is to study, mainly experimentally, scrape-off layer (SOL) modifications caused by RF sheaths effects by means of Langmuir probes that are magnetically connected to a powered ICRH antenna. Effects of the two types of Faraday screens' operation on RF-induced SOL modifications are studied for different plasma and antenna configurations - scans of strap power ratio imbalance, injected power and SOL density. In addition to experimental work, the influence of RF sheaths on retarding field analyzer (RFA) measurements of sheath potential is investigated with one-dimensional particle-in-cell code. One-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that the RFA is able to measure reliably the sheath potential only for ion plasma frequencies wpi similar to RF cyclotron frequency wrf, while for the real SOL conditions (wpi > wrf), when the RFA is magnetically connected to RF region, it is strongly underestimated. An alternative method to investigate RF sheaths effects is proposed by using broadening of the ion distribution function as an evidence of the RF electric fields in the sheath. RFA measurements in Tore Supra indicate that RF potentials do indeed propagate from the antenna 12m along magnetic field lines

Berlingieri, Maria Augusta. January 2010 (has links)
In the present work anatomic and biometric studies of the distal aspect in the flexor aspect of digits were carried out for 20 cross-breed heifer of Nelore breed aging around 24-36 months raised in an extensive regiment. The materials came from shamble under the Official Fiscalization of Inspect Service and were kept under freezing at -18°C until dissection. After the clipper and cleaning the distal areas, from metacarpus to metatarsus, the structures were dissected and measured by using a universal caliper rule (mm) on length (proximal-distal), widht (abaxial-axial) and thickness (dorso-palmar or dorso-plantar). The dissected structures included the paradigits distal accessories ligaments, palmar and plantar annular ligaments and tendon digital sheath, proximal and distal annular ligaments, interdigital distal ligament, superficial digital flexor tendon and deep digital flexor tendon and manica flexoria. The measured data indicate differences (p≤0,05) among the limb, right, left and respective digits mainly in the more distal analyzed structures. Due to scarcity of biometric studies about this topic, the data found in this work might be useful as a reference for the analyzed group, as well in the anatomic detailed structures which are essential to understanding many of the pathological process of locomotor apparatus in cattle / Orientador: José Wanderley Cattelan / Coorientador: Silvana Martinez Baraldi Artoni / Banca: Julio Carlos Canola / Banca: Claudia Acosta Duarte / Mestre

Modélisation d'un ciment pétrolier depuis le jeune âge jusqu'à l'état durci : cinétique d'hydratation et comportement poromécanique / Modelling of an oil well cement paste from early age to hardened state : hydration kinetics and poromechanical behaviour

Samudio, Marcos 20 December 2017 (has links)
The prediction of the performance of cement-based materials requires a holistic model integrating the progressive hydration of the material, the coupling between water consumption and strains, and the history of the applied loadings. This is particularly important when modelling the behavior of the cement sheath in oil wells which is subjected, from its earliest age and during its lifetime, to a wide range of mechanical and thermal loadings that could have a detrimental effect on its future mechanical properties. The aim of the present thesis is to provide a complete modelling framework for the hydro-mechanical behavior of an oil well cement paste from its earliest age to its hardened state. The manuscript is divided in two parts. Part I: Hydration kinetics The evolution of the most significant physical properties of cement-based materials is controlled by the advancement of the hydration reactions. Two different modelling approaches are presented:- A theoretical framework for the modelling of cement hydration is developed as an extension of classical nucleation and growth models. The proposed multi-component model explicitly considers anhydrous cement and water as independent phases participating in the reaction. We also introduce a growth rate that encompasses linear as well as parabolic diffusion growth in a single continuous mathematical form. The formulation naturally introduces some of the most relevant parameters of cement paste mixtures, such as the cement powder composition, mass densities of the different phases, water to cement ratio, chemical shrinkage and hydrates properties. The different rate-controlling mechanisms can be identified and interpreted on the basis of the proposed physical model.- A general hydration kinetics law based on the theory of solid phase transformations is proposed. This formulation is compared with the evolution laws found in the literature and helps providing a physical explanation that could shed light on the understanding of cement hydration kinetics. In both cases, the kinetic models are calibrated over a series of experimental results in order to properly evaluate the quality of the predictions. Part II: Mechanical constitutive law The mechanical behavior of cement paste is described in the framework of reactive porous media. The cement paste is modelled as a multi-phase porous material with an elastic-viscous-plastic constitutive law, with mechanical parameters depending on the hydration degree. Furthermore, the cement paste chemical shrinkage and pore water consumption during hydration are accounted for in the determination of the macroscopic strains. The evolution of the poroelastic parameters of the cement paste during hydration is calculated by means of a micromechanical upscaling model. An asymmetric yield surface with compressive and tensile caps is adopted for the elastoplastic regime, with hardening mechanisms considering both the cumulated plastic deformations and the hydration degree. The viscous behaviour is based on the notions of solidification theory. A water retention curve is introduced to account for the potential desaturation of the material during hydration. The model parameters for a class G cement paste are evaluated by simulating the results of mechanical loading experiments in a device specially designed for testing the thermo-mechanical behavior of cement paste from the early stages of hydration. The results show that the proposed model predicts with good accuracy the response of a hydrating cement paste when subjected to various loading paths from its early age. The importance of the loading history is outlined, as well as the need for the accurate determination of the effective stresses throughout the life of the material

Ferreira, Marcio Augusto 18 March 2005 (has links)
A técnica proposta alcançou os objetivos propostos, oferecendo nova alternativa para o acesso ao recesso palmar da articulação interfalângica distal nos eqüinos / This study was carried out in order to evaluate the viability of a new arthroscopic approach of the palmar recess of the the interphalangeal joint in horses through the synovial sheath that involves the digital flexor tendon. The purposes of the study were to provide safety and efficiency during arthrocentesis, to allow effective visualization of the anatomical structures and provide means for the manipulation of arthroscopic instruments. Initially, 20 anatomic parts corresponding to the forelimbs of 10 horses were used. Sets numbers 1 through 5 formed Group I in wich a medial surgical approach was performed. Sets numbers 6 through 10 formed Group II, in which there was a lateral surgical approach. Later, the procedure in experimental animals was analyzed. This analysis was done using the proposed arthroscopic technique in 6 distal interphalangeal joints of the forelimbs of three horses (GIII). There was no previously disease diagnosed through physical and radiographic exams. The procedures in Group III were done under put general anesthesia in the lateral recumbence position and all the animals were under observation during six weeks. In the post-operative period a physical and contrasted radiographic exams were done to evaluate the recovery as well as the necessary healing time of the membrane between the digital sheath and distal interphalangeal joint. The technique responded positively to its objectives offering a new alternative to the approach of the palmar recess in the distal interphalangical joint in horses

Estudos anatômicos, ultra-estruturais e bioquímicos da síndrome Kranz em folhas de duas espécies de Gomphrena L. (Amaranthaceae) / Anatomical, ultrastructural and biochemical surveys in leaves to two Gomphrena L. species (Amaranthaceae)

Antonucci, Natalia Paganotti 10 March 2010 (has links)
The Kranz syndrome is a set of anatomical, ultrastructural and biochemical features that culminate in the C4 photosynthesis. This syndrome has a huge diversity among Angiosperms, so it became suitable to survey all the levels above cited for its complete characterization. In the present work the Kranz syndrome of Gomphrena arborescens and G. scapigera (Amaranthaceae) is studied, with emphasis on the ontogenetic origin of the Kranz sheath, on the ultrastructural description, and on the biochemical confirmation about the C4 photosynthesis kind. The foliar development of these species shows that the Kranz sheath is originated from the inner layer of the mesophyll, the foliar endodermis. A discussion about the literature terms used to describe the Kranz sheath, all of them referring to the function of this layer in C4 photosynthesis, demonstrates the importance of using terms that inform the ontogenetic origin of this layer, such as endodermis and perycicle. The ultrastructural analysis identified possible factors that interfere on the C4 photosynthesis of both species, such as wall thickening and composition of Kranz sheath cells, the centripetal position of chloroplasts and the peripheral reticulum in chloroplasts. Although biochemical analysis has resulted in no conclusive information, the chloroplast dimorphism suggests the NADP-ME C4 photosynthesis. This work, in a general way, contributes to the knowledge of the Kranz syndrome among Amaranthaceae s.s., a group that has the ultrastructure and the biochemistry of C4 photosynthesis poorly known. It also draws attention to the importance of anatomical surveys concerning the ontogenetic origin of Kranz sheath for a better understanding on the diversity of Kranz syndrome among Angiosperms.
