Regulation of glucose metabolism by Alox8

Karki, Rabindra 01 August 2014 (has links)
Type II diabetes is one of the leading cause of morbidity in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Insulin resistance which precedes Type II diabetes is a complex state of the body where the body fails to respond to insulin. Its complexity lies in its multifactorial origin that is to say various environmental and polygenic components come into play. Here we try to dissect one of these components - `Alox8' in transgenic mice and try to see if it affects blood glucose homeostasis. Comparison of glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity among sixteen mice comprising of six wild type, five heterozygous and five knockout mice with respect to Alox8 gene showed that wild type mice had relatively more glucose tolerance than knockout mice and this corresponded with relatively more insulin sensitiveness of wild type mice with respect to the knock out. However, these findings were not significant statistically at p=0.05. In search of any relevant biological significance, periodic acid schiff staining of the liver sections from these mice in three independent repeated experiments revealed that the knockout phenotype led to accumulation of glycogen deposits as compared to the wild type mice, an indication of insulin resistance. Taken together, our data suggests that these findings when extrapolated to human which carries ALOX15B instead of mice orthologue Alox8, could lead to a benefit of administration of lower doses of insulin in the wild type phenotype as compared to its polymorphic alleles carrying individuals.

Vad medveten närvaro kan betyda i dialektisk beteendeterapi : Fem patienters och fyra behandlares perspektiv

Bergqvist, Mirja January 2009 (has links)

The weight of color

Brunberg, Mikael January 2013 (has links)
This paper explores the weight of color, with the focus lying on the symbolic significance ofcolor. Exploring whether color in itself conveys symbolic significance and is the symbolicsignificance of color permanent, or is it an after construction? It will be looking at differentareas such as what makes us humans able to perceive colors in the first place, beginning withan insight at some of the foundations in the area of color theory. Mentioning experiments ondecomposed white light, that contains the visible color spectrum and its contribution to theevolution of the color wheel. The color wheels contribution to the art world, the constructionof color harmonies and their significance. It will also be looking at some of the more commonsymbolical meanings of colors and its symbolic significance as color language. It will becovering previous research such as what the symbolic significance of color was under theElizabethan era, consequences when combining color and taste and finally an insight on thetheory of the emotion wheel and its conceptual design in combining emotions with color. There will also be a discussion part looking at the area of color therapy and thoughtsrevolving the subject. The second last part will revolve around my own observations andanalysis. Keeping in mind what I have explored in the earlier parts of this paper and using thatknowledge in my observations and analysis on three different methods utilising the symbolicsignificance of color, focused in the area of films. The last part of my paper will be the resultsof my exploration on the subject of symbolic significance of color and also a discussion part, with my own thoughts on the subject.

Upper Devonian Plant Microfossils from Eastern and Arctic Canada: Their Taxonomy and Palaeoecological Significance

Brideaux, Wayne Wilfred 05 1900 (has links)
Plant microfossils are extracted from strata of Upper Devonian age occurring at two previously uninvestigated localities in Eastern Canada and in the Canadian Arctic. The extraction procedure includes a new permanent palynological mounting technique using corn syrup and Permount, a synthetic resin. In addition, a method of eliminating by-product in residues after hydrofluoric acid, is also described. A number of miospore and acritarch form species are described and figured; nine new form species of miospores are proposed. The miospore species recovered from both localities indicate a geological age of early Upper Devonian (Frasnian) for the enclosing strata. A new way of assessing qualitative, regional palaeofloristic changes is provided by tabulation of morphological characteristics of individual miospores. The use of miospore species in defining Upper Devonian microfloral provinces and Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous migration of parent forms is demonstrated. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Significant or Not : What Does the "Magic" P-Value Tell Us?

Nelson, Mary January 2016 (has links)
The use of the p-value in determination of statistical significance—and by extension in decision making—is widely taught and frequently used. It is not, however, without limitations, and its use as a primary marker of a worthwhile conclusion has recently come under increased scrutiny. This paper attempts to explain some lesser-known properties of the p-value, including its distribution under the null and alternative hypotheses, and to clearly present its limitations and some straightforward alternatives.

A study of historic rural America

Heiman, John January 1900 (has links)
Master of Regional and Community Planning / Architecture / John W. Keller / Similar to their urban counterparts, rural communities consider preservation of a site based on their most vital economic features. With the growing minority and non-white cultures becoming more predominant in American society, so too has the culture and significance of historic events changed. More emphasis is now on the surrounding environment of those landmarks historically preserved rather than just the landmarks themselves. And in turn with the environment, more grants and awards are passed down to those sites and locations that provide more options to limiting excess space and energy while utilizing them to the fullest potential. Some conflicts still occur in relation to preserving historical integrity with development, but the total consensus is that historic preservation provides economic benefit more than loss.

Permutation Tests for Classification

Mukherjee, Sayan, Golland, Polina, Panchenko, Dmitry 28 August 2003 (has links)
We introduce and explore an approach to estimating statistical significance of classification accuracy, which is particularly useful in scientific applications of machine learning where high dimensionality of the data and the small number of training examples render most standard convergence bounds too loose to yield a meaningful guarantee of the generalization ability of the classifier. Instead, we estimate statistical significance of the observed classification accuracy, or the likelihood of observing such accuracy by chance due to spurious correlations of the high-dimensional data patterns with the class labels in the given training set. We adopt permutation testing, a non-parametric technique previously developed in classical statistics for hypothesis testing in the generative setting (i.e., comparing two probability distributions). We demonstrate the method on real examples from neuroimaging studies and DNA microarray analysis and suggest a theoretical analysis of the procedure that relates the asymptotic behavior of the test to the existing convergence bounds.
