Investigating How Meeting Older Adults' Needs Influences their Intentions to Join Senior Living Communities: A Generational PerspectiveLi, Jianwen 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
In the past twenty years, the senior living industry in the United States has been steadily growing and evolving to meet older adults’ varying needs; however, there is a lack of comprehensive studies examining how older adults’ perceptions of senior living communities’ ability to meet their needs influence their intentions to join such communities. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to investigate the influence of older adults’ (Silent and Baby Boomer Generations) perceptions of senior living communities’ ability to meet each of their needs (physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization) on their intentions to join senior living communities and (2) to examine the moderating effects of generational differences on the relationships between the older adults’ (Silent and Baby Boomer Generations) perceptions of senior living communities’ ability to meet each of their needs and their intentions to join senior living communities.
This study employed an exploratory sequential mixed-method approach. In the qualitative phase, three focus group interviews (19 participants) were conducted to understand how residents’ perceptions of senior living communities’ ability to meet their needs influenced their intentions to join their communities. In the quantitative phase, using the Qualtrics panel, 366 online surveys were collected from older adults to test the study hypotheses using structural equation modeling analysis.
Study results revealed that older adults’ perceptions of senior living communities’ ability to meet their love and belonging and esteem needs positively influenced their intentions to join such communities; however, this was not the case for physiological [foodservice, housing], safety, and self-actualization needs. Generational differences only moderated the relationship between older adults’ perceptions of senior living communities’ ability to meet their love and belonging needs and their intentions to join such communities. Insightful theoretical implications for senior living literature and practical implications for senior living community practitioners are offered.

Work Motivation Theory: Identifying Multi-Generational Values in the WorkplaceBrown-Crowder, Rhonda Rochelle 01 January 2017 (has links)
The workforce is diverse on gender, race, ethnicity, culture, work styles, and age. Employees from different generations have varying expectations of what they value from the workplace and therefore approach work differently. Generational differences can lead to mistrust and communication breakdowns. They can also impact job satisfaction and productivity. The Generational Cohort Theory was utilized in this nonexperimental study, and the sample was recruited from CB Richard Ellis Real Estate Group. The purpose of this study was to determine the work values differences among the 4 generational cohorts: Silent, Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials. The research questions for this quantitative study first identified the preferred work values, utilizing the Minnesota Importance Questionnaire (MIQ), and sought if there was a statistically significant means difference in those preferred values from 1 generation to another. A 1-way MANOVA was used to analyze the effect of generation cohort affiliation with preferred work values, revealing a positive relationship between cohort and preferred work values. Results indicated that some work values are unique between generations, such as being busy all the time and doing things for other people, and some are shared, including telling people what to do and having good coworkers. Additional research is needed to address the gap in current literature in the areas of autonomy and recognition. The implications for social change include acquiring a greater knowledge of similarities and differences between older and younger workers.. This knowledge is essential for building high-performing teams, for successful recruitment, and employee retention.

Duwamish history in Duwamish voices: weaving our family stories since colonizationAllain, Julia Anne 22 December 2014 (has links)
Duwamish people are “the People of the Inside,” “the Salmon People”—Coast Salish people who occupied a large territory inside the Olympic Mountains and the Cascade range. Ninety Longhouses were situated where Seattle and several neighbouring cities now stand. Today, over six hundred Duwamish are urban Indigenous people without legal recognition as an American Indian tribe, still battling for rights promised by the Point Elliott Treaty of 1855. Portrayals of Duwamish history since the time of colonization are often incomplete or incorrect.
A tribe member myself, I set out to record and present family stories concerning the period 1850 to the present from participants from six Duwamish families. I gathered histories told in the words of the people whose family experiences they are. It is history from a Duwamish perspective, in Duwamish voices. Collected family stories are recorded in the appendices to my dissertation. In my ethnographic study, I inquire as to what strengths have carried Duwamish people through their experiences since colonization. The stories reveal beliefs and practices which have supported the Duwamish people, and hopes for the future.
Data was gathered using multiple methods, including fieldwork—visiting a master weaver; attending tribal meetings; and visiting historic sites—reading existing documents by Duwamish authors and by settlers, and interviewing, including looking at photos to elicit information. Five themes emerged from the data: Finding a True History; What Made Them Strong; Intermarriage; Working for the People; and Working with the Youth. These themes together constitute what I term the Indigenous Star of Resilience (see Figure One in Chapter Six).
