Enfield rifles: the composite conservation of our american civil war heritage

Cox, Starr Nicole 15 May 2009 (has links)
The object of this thesis is to discuss an experimental composite conservation process and its significance for the future of artifact conservation. Composite artifacts are artifacts comprised of multiple materials such as wood, iron, and brass. The experiment was designed around five Civil War Enfield rifles from the wreck of the Civil War blockade runner Modern Greece. The main conservation difficulty for both metal and wood from a saltwater site is the presence of chlorides. If not removed, the chlorides will cause the metals to further corrode. If the chlorides are left within the wood, once the wood dries the chlorides will crystallize and burst remaining cellular structure. The second major problem for wood is the cellular structure itself. Degraded waterlogged wood loses most of its cellular structure while submerged and this must be reinforced prior to drying or partial to total collapse of the wood will occur. Composite artifacts pose one more serious problem, their composite nature. In most instances treatments for one material type are damaging to the other materials present. Disassembly of an artifact often has detrimental effects on the whole artifact whether through initial damage or the inability to reassemble the artifact after stabilization. In 1979, four Enfield rifles from Modern Greece were compositely conserved using either tetraethyl orthosilicate, sucrose, or isopropyl rosin. All three treatments focused on the conservation of the wood, resulting in the current poor condition of the iron elements. The research of this thesis uses the combined treatments of silicone oil (to treat the wood) and electrolytic reduction [ER] (to stabilize the metals), with minimal disassembly. It was discovered that prolonged exposure of the wood elements during ER had deleterious effects, post the silicone oil treatment. This prompted a re-evaluation of the research strategy. It was determined to do a re-treatment of the wood components of four of the rifles with silicone oil after the ER process. It was apparent during the ER process that iron components had loosened and could be removed allowing the wood to be extracted from the ER process earlier than the iron. Even though the experiment did not go as planned and the initial results were undesirable, valuable information was ascertained for treatment strategies and positive results are expected for the final four rifles. The retreatment of the wood with silicone oil should allow the wood to retain its shape, making reassembly possible.

Bifiltration of air polluted with alpha-pinene

Isik, Güldem January 2008 (has links)
The main objective of this investigation is to determine the effect of different physical and chemical parameters on the performance of biofilters, treating hydrophobic organic compounds. pinene was used as a model substance. Alpha-pinene is commonly found in wood, and therefore found at wood storage facilities and wood processing industries [1]. In this experiment two biofilter which were in equal size, were used. Both of them were filled with perlite for treating the alpha pinene contaminated air. One of the columns contained perlite partially coated with silicone oil to make the surface of perlite more hydrophobic. The filters were run at 5, 2.5 and 1.5 l min-1 air flow rate. The results showed that the silicone oil amended filter performed better at 2.5 l/min with a maximum removal rate of 20 g / (m3 h) in comparison with 15 g/ (m3 h) for the filter without oil. The efficiency was approximately the same for both filters at 1.5 and 5 l/min (40 compare to 35 g/m3 bed h). The flow rate was then set to 2.5 l/min once more. The results showed that the removal rate had increased to approximately 35 g/ (m3 h) and that the efficiency of both filters was approximately the same. The difference in results between the initial run and the later at 2.5 l/min is probably depending on that the microorganisms had become adapted to the α-pinene and that the microorganism communities developed differently in the two filters. Dessutom växte svamp i båda filtren.

Corneal complications related to retinal surgical patients including analysis on silicone oil use

Wayne, Erica Nicole 13 July 2017 (has links)
Postoperative corneal complications from pars plana vitrectomy surgery on the retina have been studied extensively in the literature. Researchers are aware of possible issues with oil tamponades, laser techniques, and other methods used. There could be clear markers to focus on a pattern of retina diagnoses of the patients that seem more prone to these problems in the front of the eye. Studies have noted refractive issues and increased cataract or posterior capsule opacification (PCO) progression but it is inconclusive in many studies on a corneal safety standpoint. Furthermore, a 23 or 27gauge pars plana vitrectomy has varying protocols depending on the diagnosis of the retina patient including endolaser, tamponade exchange, or even endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation. This study was conducted to research data looking at varying combinations of surgical type, diagnosis, and other patient characteristics to gain statistical evidence or relative frequency to better understand what type of retinal demographics cause corneal complications. The list of corneal complications in this study include: visual distortion involving anisometropia or photophobia, increased intraocular pressure including Uveitis-Glaucoma Hyphema syndrome, allergic conjunctivitis, a lens subluxation, herpes virus (zoster or simplex), a corneal scar or lesion, neurotrophic cornea, bullous keratopathy and corneal neovascularization. This was a retrospective case study evaulating 57 patients and 58 eyes that underwent a retinal surgery, with corneal complications at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center between October 2013 to December 2016. Number of patients, systemic demographics including frequency of hypertension and diabetes, and frequency of retina surgery per eye was analyzed. Moreover, we looked at different retina diagnoses to view which groups have a higher occurrence of complications after surgery. We used silicone oil as a way to divide the corneal complication patients to determine if the use of oil had an effect on a higher rate of issues after surgery. Eyes were divided into treatment with silicone oil group (n=23) and a non-silicone oil group (n=34), and we found that the silicone group had a significantly higher frequency of retinal surgeries (p<0.001). Moreover, there was no significant evidence between certain systemic factors (p<0.05), that allowed us to include the silicone oil and non-silicone oil patients as a unified group. When looking at our retina diagnoses we saw some groups had a higher percentage of complications when we took total number of problematic postoperative outcomes and divided that by total number of surgeries. Over one quarter of the surgeries per category leading to corneal complications occurred in the categories of subluxed lens, endophthalmitis, trauma, and uveitis-glaucoma hyphema Syndrome or neovascular glaucoma. Vitreomacular traction similarly had a high percentage of patients with corneal complications. Retinal detachment and epiretinal membrane were largest quantities of a specific retinal problem with low percentages of fewer than 15% with complications postoperatively. The study found that in our patient demographic silicone oil did not seem to be a factor in causing more corneal complications but it did cause more retinal surgeries. Moreover, certain retina diagnoses seem more prone to cause challenging outcomes, which leaves room for further studies distinguishing certain factors that could cause such specific issues.

METHODOLOGIE D'ANALYSE DE DEFAILLANCE POUR L'EVALUATION DE LA FIABILITE DE DIODES ELECTROLUMINESCENTES GaN

Baillot, Raphaël 21 November 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Anatomical and Functional Results of Endotamponade with Heavy Silicone Oil – Densiron® 68 – in Complicated Retinal Detachment

Herbrig, Erdmuth, Sandner, Dirk, Engelmann, Katrin 13 February 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Background: High-density silicone oils are newly developed long-term tamponade agents for the treatment of complicated retinal detachment in the inferior retina. Previous studies describe satisfying anatomical and functional results. In this study we examined the largest cohort so far for a 9-month follow-up and performed a comparison to conventional silicone oil. Methods: Our study documents results and adverse effects after vitreoretinal surgery and endotamponade with Densiron® 68 in 99 cases of complicated retinal detachment. A 9-month follow-up was performed. Data of 21 patients with intraocular conventional silicone oil tamponade in complicated retinal detachment were retrospectively analyzed and served as control. Results: Anatomical success was achieved in 78 of 89 eyes (87.6%) with completed follow-up; visual acuity did not change significantly (from mean preoperative logMAR 1.88 to postoperative logMAR 1.96 (p = 0.9). Compared to control a higher anatomical success but a similar number of adverse effects were observed with heavy silicone oil in vitreous. Nevertheless, patients who received Densiron 68 twice due to redetachment showed a significantly higher rate of intraocular inflammation with the tamponade agent in situ. Conclusion: Our results support the hypothesis of Densiron 68 as potent tamponade agent for complicated retinal detachment in the inferior retinal segments especially in eyes where a previous operation failed. Up to date, polymer-based packaging degradation mechanisms are not fully understood. The purpose of this thesis is to work out a methodology of failure analysis contributing towards reliability estimation of GaN-based LEDs under active storage ageing tests. The methodology consists in extracting electro-optical failure signatures to locate degraded zones. A second step is based on physico-chemical analyses used to both confirm failure mechanisms and reduce the number of components to study. Environmental ageing tests (1500h/85°C/Inominal) have been performed on low power InGaN/GaN MQW LEDs (30mW) through a project in collaboration with the French Space Agency (CNES). A 65% loss of optical power has been reported after ageing. Through the methodology, we have found out that optical loss is due to the silicone oil (i.e. chip coating) polymerization activated by photothermal mechanism thereby involving both a 69% fluorescence emission loss and a strong decrease of LED light absorption (90%). A similar failure mechanism has been reported on YAG:Ce/silicone oil mixture located in phosphor converted high power white InGaN/GaN MQW LEDs (CEA-LETI collaboration - Solid-State Lighting project). Fluorescence efficiency has increased (1,2% at 450 nm) despite both strong absorption (94%) and fluorescence emission (85%) losses. Actually, silicone oil polymerization has induced a 45% loss of optical power and a 3,6% yellow shift of white light. Such drift has been linked to both a 5nm blue shift of UV fluorescence involving a 2nm red shift of LED light.
