Syftet med denna uppsats var att pröva om de centrala begreppen i Guidelines for OperationalPlanning GOP är relevanta/allmängiltiga, genom att placera dem i ett historiskt perspektiv. Jagvalde att analysera den amerikanska planeringen vid slaget om Midway med hjälp utavGuidelines for Operational Planning. Från de centrala begrepp som återfinns i GOP har jagundersökt om dessa går att spåra i den amerikanska planeringen som skedde före och underslaget vid Midway.Midway var vändpunkten för kriget i stilla havet. Efter en serie av fantastiska segrar erhöllJapans flotta ett enormt bakslag. Fyra hangarfartyg och huvuddelen av de mest erfarna piloterna iJapan var tillintetgjorda. Japans främsta offensiva instrument för att kunna dominera i Stilla havetvar förstört. Den fulla omfattningen av den amerikanska segern vid Midway stod inte klar förränefter några år. Den Japanska flottan skulle aldrig återhämta sig från detta slag.De centrala begreppen i GOP och tillika nyckelord är Centre of Gravity, Decisive Points, Directand Indirect Approach, Culmination, Manouvre, Operational Pause, Tempo och Lines ofOperation. / The purpose with this paper was to test if the central conceptions in theGuidelines for Operational Planning, GOP, are relevant/universal by placingthem in a historical perspective. I had chosen to analyse the American planningduring the battle of Midway by using the Guidelines for Operational Planning.From the central conceptions found in the GOP I examined if they can betraced in the American planning procedure that was made before and duringthe battle.Midway was the turning point of the Pacific War. After a serious of stunningvictories Japan`s naval air arm received a shattering blow. Four aircraft carriersand the cream of her pilots, Japan`s principal offensive instrument in the bidfor domination of the Pacific, were destroyed.The completely extent of the American victory in the Pacific Ocean was notfully understood until a couple of years after the Second World War.
