An interrelated approach to teaching mathematics in further educationTurner, Stanley January 1986 (has links)
Reports and consultative documents published at national level since about 1980 have indicated that British Industry must look to modern technology and also educate and train its workers on a 'broad base', with an 'integrated' approach. Traditionally, and still very much the mode of operation, teaching has been confined within subject boundaries. A research group was established by Professor Bajpai consisting of the author, Mr Rod Bond (Burleigh Community College, Loughborough) and a few others working overseas to investigate a teaching strategy based on an interrelated approach to teaching mathematics. Measurement was chosen as the first topic of investigation using this approach which then formed the basis for further research undertaken by the two research workers of the group whose work is reported in the form of two theses. This thesis aims to show that mathematics is naturally related to science and technology in industrial practice and that when taught in an interrelated way it would be more interesting and have more relevance to real applications in technology-based employment at craft and technician levels. To help establish the case experiments carried out by the author are referred to; these include a few case studies, a questionnaire survey and results analysed from more than five hundred basic mathematics tests. The various kinds of mathematics taught in further education are described and compared with mathematics in a practical context as seen from a case study within an engineering training school. Next a survey of mathematics at work shows that, like the training school, there is a task associated with the mathematics which is also related to science or technology or both. Another case study in the pharmaceutical industry lends further support to the way mathematics is used in industry. Much of the mathematics also seems to be basic and used in association with measurement and a particular task. It was decided by the research group that a tape/slide programme on measurement for students and educators should be developed by the author and tested in different situations. Teaching modules on relevant mathematical topics based on the interrelated approach were constructed for students with strong support from industry in the form of materials and advice. Testing of these modules, in their original and revised forms after feedback, is described. These trials were also carried out in other establishments. Modules based upon the interrelated approach developed by the author formed a basis for promoting the underlying philosophy behind this approach. These were presented to educators in in-service training and staff development programmes in the north western region of the UK with success. Observations and conclusions drawn clearly indicate that this type of method makes mathematics more interesting and relevant for students of different abilities and backgrounds. Finally pointers are given in the thesis as to the wider use and promotion of this approach for teaching mathematics in further education.

Aspects mécanistiques et énergétiques des interactions entre l'ADN et une molécule intercalante / Mechanistics and energetics aspects of interactions between DNA and a intercalating drugWilhelm, Matthieu 13 July 2012 (has links)
Therefore, it is the target of numerous pharmacological molecules used in cancer therapies. Among them, daunomycin will interact with the double helix by intercalation between DNA’s base pairs, thus blocking replication. Despite the proven efficiency of intercalating molecules, and many studies on this subject, the mechanism of intercalation process is not yet clearly understood. Based on molecular dynamics with an all atoms representation in explicit solvent conditions, this work, in one hand, aim to characterize the influence of the conformational flexibility of daunomycin during interactions with DNA. In a second hand, we focused on the reaction pathway leading daunomycine to its intercalation site using umbrella sampling. This study, in addition to providing free energies in agreement with experimental data, has allowed to highlight an intercalation mechanism involving a preliminary step where daunomycin bind to the minor groove of DNA, followed by a intermediate step of reorientation of the ligand. Finally, the realization of sliding simulations of daunomycin along DNA minor groove, has allowed us to focus on the mechanism that allow a ligand to locate its intercalation site on DNA

Melanoma Diagnostics Using Fully Convolutional Networks on Whole Slide ImagesPhillips, Adon January 2017 (has links)
Semantic segmentation as an approach to recognizing and localizing objects within an image is a major research area in computer vision. Now that convolutional neural networks are being increasingly used for such tasks, there have been many improve- ments in grand challenge results, and many new research opportunities in previously untennable areas.
Using fully convolutional networks, we have developed a semantic segmentation pipeline for the identification of melanocytic tumor regions, epidermis, and dermis lay- ers in whole slide microscopy images of cutaneous melanoma or cutaneous metastatic melanoma. This pipeline includes processes for annotating and preparing a dataset from the output of a tissue slide scanner to the patch-based training and inference by an artificial neural network.
We have curated a large dataset of 50 whole slide images containing cutaneous melanoma or cutaneous metastatic melanoma that are fully annotated at 40× ob- jective resolution by an expert pathologist. We will publish the source images of this dataset online. We also present two new FCN architectures that fuse multiple deconvolutional strides, combining coarse and fine predictions to improve accuracy over similar networks without multi-stride information.
Our results show that the system performs better than our comparators. We include inference results on thousands of patches from four whole slide images, reassembling them into whole slide segmentation masks to demonstrate how our system generalizes on novel cases.

Technologie výroby plastového nástavce se závitem / Production technology of plastic threaded adaptersTurek, Tomáš January 2012 (has links)
The Master thesis deals with the possible production of the plastic unit with thread. As the most suitable material was chosen the polyformaldehyde (POM), its production label is Delrin 500P NC010 by Du Pont. The thesis consists of a part with the information about the technology of injection molding of plastics and a part where processing parameters for the production of the plastic unit are designed. Part of the solution was to create an assembly design of injection mold. Since the plastic unit with thread is very specificly shaped the form is handled as a slide mold. The mold is pieced together from normalized parts by the Hasco and DME company. The serie of 100 000 pieces would be delivered in 5 months. Because of the cost savings a solution of the cold-runner system was suggested. A suitable injection molding machine was chosen from the calculated values from Arburgfroms – Type 370s Allrounder 500-170.At the end of the thesis costs were evalueted for acquire per one piece of adapter.
