Measuring Emotional Responses to Interaction: Evaluation of Sliders and Physiological Reactions

Recent work has proposed sliders as a useful way to measure self-reported emotion continuously. My dissertation extends this work to ask: what are relevant properties of affective self-report on sliders and variations? How reliable are affective self-reports? How do they relate to physiological data? What are individual and cultural differences? How can this method be applied to ehealth? Three emotion self-report tools (one-slider, two-slider, a touchscreen) were developed and evaluated in four experiments. The first experiment was within-subjects. Participants viewed short videos, with four self-report conditions (including no reporting) and physiological capture (heart rate variability and skin conductance). In a re-rating task, the sliders models were found to be more reliable than the touchscreen (Lottridge & Chignell, 2009a). The second and third experiments were between-subjects, and examined individual and cultural differences. Canadian and Japanese participants watched a nature video, while rating emotions and answering questions. Analyses were carried out within and across the datasets. Larger operation span displayed a minor benefit. Valence and arousal ratings were not strongly related to skin conductance. The Japanese performed on par with Canadians but reported worse performance. Based on the results, the recommendation was made that a single slider be used to rate valence, that arousal be estimated with skin conductance, and that slider psychometrics be used to assess cognitive load over time. In the fourth experiment, diabetic participants watched Diabetes-related videos. They clustered into usage patterns: some moved the slider very little during videos and more afterward, some hardly moved the slider, and some used it as expected. Two novel metrics facilitated these analyses: Emotional Bandwidth, an application of information entropy that characterizes the granularity of the self reports (Lottridge & Chignell, 2009b) and Emotional Majority Agreement, the amount of agreement relative to a sample’s self-reports (Lottridge & Chignell, 2009c). In summary, this dissertation contributes a method of measuring emotion through sliders and skin conductance that has been evaluated in a number of experimental studies. It contributes the empirical results, design recommendations, and two novel metrics of emotional response. Limitations and implications for future research and practice are also discussed.

Predicting Graduation from Prior Academic Achievement, Attendance, and Behavior: A Quantitative Analysis

The purpose of this study was to analyze high school graduation rates from prior academic achievement, attendance, and behavior in one school system over 4 years. The study addressed three questions, which of the students included in this study dropped out of high school, how exclusionary discipline affected students' attendance at school and their ability to graduate. In addition, for the students who dropped out, what was their exclusionary discipline rate, what was their chronic absenteeism rate, and what was the leading cause of students not graduating on time? By examining specific predictors, we can gain insight into why some students fail to graduate high school on time or drop out early. Keeping track of essential indicators such as attendance, behavior, and academic achievement in the classroom will increase the likelihood of students graduating after 4 years of high school. Using the comparative case study approach, this study compared four cohorts of students who graduated from one urban high school. A correlational, nonexperimental design was used. After the data were analyzed, using descriptive statistics and mean averages of the variables, it was discovered that, across three of the four study cohort clusters, there was a consistent overrepresentation of Hispanic male English language learners (ELLs) who experienced some type of exclusionary discipline, and who failed their Standards of Learning English reading/writing and mathematics assessments leading to them dropping out of school. As a result of tracking students' academics, attendance, and behaviors, schools can design professional development for teachers and school administrators to identify at-risk students early and assist them in preventing failure. In the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, academic warning indicator systems must be more representative of diverse student populations. Life History Energetics of The Red-Eared Turtle, Pseudemys scripta in North Central Texas

A population of the red-eared slider, Pseudemys scripta, in north central Texas was studied from 1975 to 1980. A life history energy budget was developed for a typical individual in the population and the population dynamics were estimated. A growth model relating growth rate to mean plastron length (PL) was developed from recapture data and used to 1) establish age classes and 2) age individuals. Growth rate was highly variable in both sexes. Females grew more rapidly than males and attained a larger maximum size (230 mm and 195 mm PL in females and males respectively). Females reached sexual maturity in their ninth year at a PL of 185-190 mm. Males matured in their sixth year at a PL of 90-100 mm. Females produced three clutches annually; clutch size ranged from 7 to 14 (X=10.3; N=20). Ova were enlarged in the early spring and ovulation began in late April and early May. Egg laying occurred from mid- May through June. Both egg size and clutch size increased with female body size. Lipid levels were variable within and among seasons. No annual lipid cycling pattern was evident in females. The proportion of assimilated energy devoted to reproduction, a measure of reproductive effort (RE), by females, was 13 per cent the first year of maturity (9 y) and increased to 20 per cent by their twentieth year. Lifetime RE was 16 per cent. Population density was estimated as 51 males and 50 females per ha in a 8.2-ha area of the lake. Young juveniles (less than 2 y) were not present although other subadult age classes were about equally represented. Fewer adults were encountered. An annual total production of 4000 eggs was estimated for the population present in 1977. A survival rate of from 2 to 18 per cent was estimated for the period between egg laying to 3 y. The large group of turtles younger than 10 y represented an expanding (Rₒ=1.8) lake population and the small group of older turtles were the remnants of a creek population present before Moss Lake was formed. The demographic environment, high juvenile mortality and low adult mortality, was suggested as a primary selective force shaping the life history characteristics of the Moss Lake scripta population.

Pounding and impact of base isolated buildings due to earthquakes

As the cost of land in cities increases, the need to build multistory buildings in close proximity to each other also increases. Sometimes, construction materials, other objects and any projections from a building may also decrease the spacing provided between the buildings. This leads to the problem of pounding of these closely placed buildings when responding to earthquake ground motion. The recent advent of base isolation systems and their use as an efficient earthquake force resisting mechanism has led to their increased use in civil engineering structures. At the same time, building codes that reflect best design practice are also evolving. The movement of these base isolated buildings can also result in building pounding. Since base isolation is itself a relatively new technique, pounding phenomenon in base isolated buildings have not been adequately investigated to date. This study looks at the base isolated response of a single two story building and adjacent two story building systems. Four earthquakes with increasing intensity were used in this study. It was found that it is difficult to anticipate the response of the adjacent buildings due to non- linear behavior of pounding and base isolation. The worst case for pounding was found to occur when a fixed base and base isolated buildings were adjacent to each other.
