Performance Management in a German Hidden Champion - an Action Research investigationSchlüter, Thomas January 2018 (has links)
Purpose - This thesis addresses the lack of research on Performance Management
(PM) in Hidden Champions (HCs) due to development and implementation
of a HC tailored PM system (PMS) in Action Research Design
(AR). A HC tailored strategy map and PMS framework were elaborated to
improve the financial and non-financial performance of the HC.
Design/methodology/approach - A longitudinal case study with two AR cycles
were performed to develop the HC tailored strategy map and framework
for the PMS including their implementation using mixed methods data collection.
A validated HC tailored strategy map and framework for the PMS implementation
are presented.
Findings - Findings show significantly increased financial and non-financial
performance of the HC. The revenue of the case company increased by
11.6%, the return on revenue increased 3% up to 17%, customer satisfaction
grew, throughput times shortened and leadership competencies improved.
Findings further show that AR is an effective procedure for HC tailored PMS
design and implementation.
Research limitations and practical implications - The findings are based
on one case study and needs to be tested in other HCs. Findings should be
of interest to scholars in the field of PM, as well as practitioners improving financial
and non-financial performance.
Originality/value -This thesis contributes to knowledge of PM in HCs, and
AR, as it provides a validated HC strategy map and framework for HC tailored
PMS implementation in a HC. It provides an approach for practitioners
to improve financial and non-financial performance in HCs.

Aim – The aim of this study is to investigate the role that business strategy plays in theimplementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This research will enable us to answerthe questions of why SMEs get involved in CSR and How is CSR implemented/incorporated inthe business strategy of the company?Method – The study is based on an abductive research approach, which enables the theoreticalframework, empirical data as well as the analysis to evolve simultaneously. Information wascollected through semi-structured interviews from four representatives of three companies. Apurposive sampling is used to select the studied companies. Axial coding is used to analyze thedata and draw conclusions.Findings – The study shows SMEs are also very interested in CSR practices. There are severalmotivations behind SMEs involvement in CSR practices. These motivations include: theirinterest in doing good to other stakeholders (fulfillment of personal values), their image andreputation, an increase in employee involvement, and a stronger market position etc. The studyalso shows that business strategy has a significant role in the implementation of CSR.Conclusion – The results of this research show that CSR practices have an explicit noteworthyconnection with SME reputation. Incorporating your CSR strategy and your business strategyhas a positive effect in the implementation of CSR practices.

No / This paper reports on empirical work recently conducted about the use and effectiveness of HRM practices in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). A telephone survey was conducted with 100 senior managers of SMEs to ascertain their use of a range of human resource practices and the extent to which they had found those practices successful in aiding the achievement of company objectives. Additionally in-depth interviews were conducted with senior managers from a further 22 SMEs. Findings suggest that there is considerable diversity amongst SMEs in relation to their use of HR practices. A model is provided that identifies the key criteria that underlie the adoption of HRM practices, and the implications of the model are discussed.

No / The purpose of this paper is to present a knowledge management (KM) tool which has been designed to support the creation of virtual knowledge sharing networks (KSNs). It is a software-based application that enables the sharing of knowledge related to the implementation of manufacturing excellence (ME) best practices and improvement tools. A survey of SMEs was carried out to investigate the implementation of ME best practices. The results indicated that that the main barrier to the implementation of best practices, quality models and improvement tools is a lack of knowledge about these initiatives due to the resource constraints experienced by SMEs. This led to the development of a KM tool to support the creation of virtual networks to enable SMEs to manage improvement projects and share effectively the generated knowledge. The KM tool is currently at the stage of validation and its future implementation is also under consideration. The KM tool supports the creation of KSNs through an explicit KM approach to share ideas, experiences and knowledge about implementation of best practices and improvement tools; helping SMEs to become more competitive. This research has demonstrated that is possible to provide a KM tool that is suitable for use by a KSN of SMEs. This approach allows transferring some of the tacit and explicit knowledge generated during the implementation of improvement initiatives into electronic documents for future consultation by KSN members.

The Interplay of Human and Social Capital among Internationalization of Small and Medium-sized EnterprisesZijan, Valerija, Eriksson, Kajsa January 2024 (has links)
Purpose - This thesis aims to explore the combined effects of entrepreneurs' human and social capital on the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises through internationalization. Research question - How does the interplay of an entrepreneur´s human and social capital influence small and medium-sized enterprise´s growth through internationalization? Method - This research is a qualitative single case adopting an inductive approach aligned with an ontology relativism position and social constructivism position of epistemology. Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data for the research. The data was analyzed using the Gioia method, creating 33 first-order terms, 8 second-order themes, and, lastly, the aggregate dimension. Findings - The results of this research show that both the entrepreneur's human and social capital play a decisive role in the growth of SMEs through internationalization. There is a strong correlation between human and social capital, which means that SMEs cannot effectively go through the internationalization process solely with the support of one of these capitals without the other. By effectively utilizing both human and social capital, companies can create advantages and increase their competitiveness. Implications - This research's Theoretical implications highlight that by examining the interplay between entrepreneurs' human and social capital, researchers can identify key factors for successful SME internationalization and understand network leveraging for growth. Additionally, this research provides practical implications by emphasizing the importance of leveraging human and social capital, existing networks, and strategic relationships to enhance SME internationalization and drive sustainable growth.

Yes / Research on the correlations between design leadership, work values and ethics, and workplace innovation is lacking, especially in non-Western regions. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of design leadership in the relationship of work values and ethics with workplace innovation in Asian small- and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). Five hypotheses were established to explore the proposed model. Data were obtained from 995 SMEs in Japan, Thailand, China, and Vietnam and were examined using partial least squares analysis. The findings indicated a correlation between work values and ethics and design leadership, with the latter influencing workplace innovation across its four dimensions. This demonstrated the significant association between work values and ethics and workplace innovation. Design leadership was also shown to fully mediate the relationship between work values and ethics and workplace innovation in Asian SMEs. This study provides a deeper understanding of the emerging literature on the associations of design leadership, work values and ethics, and workplace innovation. It emphasizes the importance of design leadership and its correlations with various aspects of workplace innovation and work values and ethics, which have not received adequate attention in the existing literature. Asian SME entrepreneurs can improve the innovation capabilities of their organizations by focusing on and implementing design leadership behaviors, which may thereby help their organizations establish a competitive advantage and promote long-term sustainability.

Yes / Entrepreneurs need to be more resilient. As economic disruptions are inevitable, organizations need to have resilient leaders. Resilient organizations possess the capacity to sustain favorable transformations and successfully navigate numerous hurdles during periods of crisis or adversity. The purpose of this research is to develop a new measurement tool for resilient leadership within the context of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Despite vast empirical evidence on the topic of leadership toward sustainable performance, validated assessments of resilient leadership are still underexplored. Therefore, the researchers initiated a quantitative research approach by gathering data from 100 SME leaders across various industries. The newly developed resilient leadership questionnaires were electronically distributed to the respondents. The data was analyzed using SPSS 26.0. The data analysis comprised descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and exploratory factor analysis. The results revealed and verified six- dimensions of resilient leadership, which include adaptability, emotional intelligence, visionary, spiritual intelligence, growth mindset, and internal ecosystem. The measurement scale developed, and the factor structure produced can be used to assess and develop more resilient leaders that could help to sustain business performance among SMEs. The inclusion of a spiritual element into the model adds value and provides a holistic view of a resilient leadership model that is not only applicable to the context of SMEs in Malaysia but also across borders.

yes / Purpose – Cost reduction through the use of technology has become the competitive strength of companies. The benefits of technology integration are quite credible and have been effective in business competition. The purpose of this paper is to describe an integrated manufacturing strategy for the deployment of a CAD/CAM system in a small, medium manufacturing enterprise (SMME). Design/methodology/approach – A case study of a SMME is utilised in deploying an integrated CAD/CAM system for practical application of manufacturing technology for achieving sustainable growth through lean systems design (LSD). The paper presents a techno-economic and technology change management framework, with an application of a holistic set of lean deployment tools that include establishing a strategic and operational plan for implementing CAD/CAM systems as a means to achieving world-class performance. Findings – The paper shows that the CAD/CAM integration within the case company increased knowledge of CAD/CAM technology, productivity, and flexibility whilst reducing throughput times. Based on the literature review and the current case study, a framework for ideal CAD/CAM implementation has been proposed. The paper also shows that management and organisational structures are key inhibitors for successful implementation of technology integration. Research limitations/implications – The paper uses a single case study to validate deployment of the integrated manufacturing strategy in SMMEs. Hence there is a limitation to its generality. Practical implications – ThepaperprovidesanopportunitytofurtherunderstandCAD/CAMsystem implementation protocols within a well structured framework and its configuration within SMMEs. Social implications – The CAD/CAM implementation framework will allow the SMMEs to achieve Lean manufacturing (thereby minimising wastes) leading to improved growth and employment rates. Originality/value – The presentation of conceptualisation, development and implementation of an integrated CAD/CAM system in support of organisational wide Lean manufacturing initiative in SMMEs is an originality of this paper.

Figures show the unemployment rate in South Africa is increasing. Entrepreneurship
is a very good solution to decrease the unemployment rate and increase the
economic growth of South Africa. Very few studies have been done on
entrepreneurship, including women entrepreneurs, as men have always been the
leaders in this regard. More than 50% of South Africa‟s population is female and
deemed as a very important factor for the country's economic growth. Women
entrepreneurs have been understudied; there are also other factors and relationships
that should be investigated and understood for the government to be able to
establish programmes and assistance for women entrepreneurs to start and grow
businesses.
The research for this study was conducted in the Gauteng Province as poverty levels
are high, despite large industries in this province and the fact that it is the most Gross
Domestic Province for South Africa.
The objective of this study is to investigate women entrepreneurship in the Gauteng
and to make practical recommendations to enhance women entrepreneurship in this
province. A survey including 41 women-owned businesses was conducted. A
detailed profile of the woman entrepreneur in Gauteng was compiled, including the
structure of the business. Factors such as the level of organisational commitment,
dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation, job satisfaction, life satisfaction,
development needs as well as the perceived business success, have been
investigated. The relationships between these factors have also been investigated in
the empirical research.
The most urgent needs of women entrepreneurs in Gauteng are marketing training,
financial support, machinery, equipment and tools as well as infrastructure. It is
recommended that these needs are addressed through a support initiative especially
implemented for women entrepreneurs. These factors need to be understood by the
