Como o recorte temporal da obra não nos permitiria um tratamento adequado do objeto em questão, optamos por extrair de seus principais textos as referências acerca da construção do conceito. A partir disso, conseguimos consolidar a hipótese de que o conceito de classes sociais no pensamento de Florestan Fernandes é determinado por uma base teórica centrada simultaneamente nas teorias sociais de Max Weber e Karl Marx, ao longo de toda a sua obra. Defenderemos que a inflexão ocorrida no seu ideário teórico posteriormente à década de 1970, apesar de tornar predominantes os referenciais marxistas, ainda assim estabelece linhas de continuidade ecléticas com a produção anterior, o que se reflete no tratamento dado pelo autor ao conceito de classes sociais e nas suas análises acerca da luta de classes no Brasil. / Abstract: The main object of this research is the thought of Florestan Fernandes, specifically the analysis of what was the use of the concept of social classes defined by the author along his theoretical production about dependent capitalism in Brazil. As the time frame of the work would not allow us a proper treatment of the object in question, we chose to extract from his main production the references concerning his theoretical construction of the concept. From this, we were able to consolidate the hypothesis that the social concept of social classes within Florestan Fernandes' thought is determined by a theoretical base centered simultaneously in the social theories of Max Weber and Karl Marx, throughout his entire work. We will argue that the inflection occurred in his theoretical ideas after the 1970s, even though makes the marxist referencial become predominant, still stablishes eclectic lines of continuity with his previous production, which is reflected in the treatment given by the author to the concept of social classes and his analysis about the class struggle in Brazil. / Mestre

There is evidence throughout the stories, and in Joyce's letters, to show that Dubliners should be considered as a single entity rather than as a series of unconnected short stories. This thesis examines Joyce's presentation of Dublin's middle class as a unifying principle underlying the whole work. Joyce believed that his city was in the grip of a life-denying "paralysis", and this thesis studies his attempt in Dubliners to relate that paralysis to those attitudes towards experience which his Dubliners hold in common. The stories in Dubliners are grouped to form a progression from childhood through adolescence to maturity and public life. This progression reveals the nature of Dublin's middle class and its effect on its individual member throughout his life. Childhood is a time of comparative freedom, and adolescence shows the individual's increasing conformity to the standards and values of his class. By the time he reaches maturity he is totally trapped in that paralysis reflected in the corruption of the public institutions. The nature of the middle class is revealed by four sub-themes which I designate: "religion," "adventure", "love", and "culture". For the purposes of this analysis the stories are grouped according to these thematic divisions, but Joyce's own order is always taken into consideration. Chapters 1 to IV each examines one of these sub-themes. This thesis presents a study of the origin and development of the caste system in India.

Bibliography: pages 168-180. / The concern of this study is to identify social areas among the coloured population of Greater Cape Town and to see if these are recognisable in physical space; i.e. if once social areas are recoqnised, whether the patterns of differing social status can be related to that of adjacent areas. If socio-economic status is assumed to be reflected in housing type and quality, then physical environment and interaction between adjacent areas is likely to play an important role in creating an environment that is perceived to have a particular character and status. As a result, contiguity will have great significance in the emergence of distinct socio-economic sub-areas. It is therefore essential to concentrate a study of this type on adjacent ESD's and to regard the four major concentrations of residential areas as separate entities. By dealing primarily with contiguous ESD's each forming separate residential concentrations, it carries no implication that there is no interaction between the different residential concentrations. Together they form a total system and areas of similar socio-economic status may develop in all or some of the residential concentrations.
