Are older individuals who live alone in Sweden at increased risk of vulnerability? : An investigation of personal and community factorsNystedt, Jennie January 2018 (has links)
Introduction: In Sweden today a third of all those 60+ live alone and the absolute number will continue to increase because of the aging population. The aim of this thesis was to identify if the subgroup, older individuals living alone, might be more disadvantaged in regard to the four key sources to vulnerability suggested by Mechanic and Tanner (2007): Poverty and low socioeconomic status, personal functions, low social network and lack of support, and physical location. Gender differences were also investigated. Method: Data was from the Swedish Panel Study of Living Conditions of the Oldest Old (SWEOLD) collected in 2014. The total sample in this thesis includes 987 individuals with an age between 70-105. To estimate the current living conditions in regard to vulnerability among the subgroup, five dimensions of vulnerability were analyzed with multiple logistic and linear regressions. Results: More disadvantages are found for those men and women living alone in all domains, except in social activity for women where living arrangement made no difference. Significant gender differences can be seen in depressive symptoms and social activity, but not for financial insecurity, mobility problems or living in a disorganized local community. Conclusion: Men and women living alone are more disadvantaged compared to those living with a partner, according to the four key sources to vulnerability. With this deeper insight it is possible to obtain a greater understanding in where policies to support and strengthen this subgroup should be placed.

Úskalí života rodin s dětmi dlouhodobě setrvávajících na ubytovnách / The life of families with children in the long term remaining in hostels.KUBEŠOVÁ, Stanislava January 2017 (has links)
Diploma thesis discusses life of families with children in social housing. Reasons for long term life of some families in social housing is lack of money, high indebtedness, issues concerning duties of rental agreements. The thesis aims to map risks related to long term using of these facilities. Further it examines means of acquiring standard accomodation of these families and their readiness for duties following house rental. It also inquires in comparison of opinions of families with expert opinions. Theoretical part clarifies right for accomodation as a basic human need. It explains term sof renting and social housing. Furthermore it deals with integration of persons from excluded localities. Factors of endangering persons living long term in social housing, institutions concerned with these issues, possible solutions and related benefits entitlements are also part of the theoretical part. Practical part is in form of qualitative research: namely semi-structured interview. Research has two parts. First part is focused on opinions of actual families living in social housin. In second part are opinions of experts. Interviews took place in three social houses and in workplace of experts. From the research results is clear that life in social housing has negative impact on the occupants. People live there in social isolation and in very bad sanitary and technical conditions. This situation has very bad influence on children who lack the culture of regular accomodation. It is necessary to specify the cooperation principle of social workers in job centers and in government instituions. Families need help with the trasition from social housing to rental housing. Considering for example the means for paying the deposit. Another step could be the employment increase, which is the best tool agains the social exclusion. Simultaneously it is necessary to put in place a rent cap of social housing, to adopt legislation concerning social housing that would solve particulary housing issues of families with children, thus allowing parents to rise children sustainably in decent conditions.

Childhood trauma and its psychosocial sequelae : a thesis portfolioLemaigre, Charlotte January 2017 (has links)
Background: It is widely understood that survivors of childhood trauma (emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional, physical neglect) have poorer mental health outcomes than their non-abused counterparts; one of which is an increased risk of suicidality. The disclosure of childhood abuse is key to safeguarding against further victimization and promoting better psychosocial outcomes for survivors in the long-term. Aims: The aims of this thesis portfolio are twofold. Firstly, to review the published literature investigating the barriers and facilitators to disclosing sexual abuse as perceived by children and adolescents (Chapter 1). Secondly, to research the relationship between childhood trauma and suicidality in a cohort of socio-economically deprived men living in Scotland (Chapter 3). The bridging chapter (Chapter 2) discusses the main themes that connect chapters one and three, notably the possible negative impact of childhood trauma on adult psychosocial functioning. Method: An exploratory systematic review and meta-synthesis of the literature was carried out. Strict eligibility criteria were predefined and a comprehensive search strategy identified a total of thirteen studies for review. For the empirical study, a total of 86 adult men with past and/or present suicidality participated in a quantitative cohort study and completed measures on childhood trauma, emotion regulation, interpersonal difficulties and suicidal behaviour. Multiple mediation analysis was used to analyse the data and to answer the study’s research questions. Results: The exploratory review highlighted that existing research into child and adolescent disclosures of sexual abuse is still in its infancy and that robust, longitudinal studies with more sophisticated methodologies are required to replicate findings. The collective body of literature identified that limited support, perceived negative consequences and feelings of self-blame, shame and guilt serve as significant barriers to disclosure whilst being asked or prompted through the provision of developmentally appropriate information facilitates young people to tell. The empirical study found that emotion regulation and interpersonal difficulties mediate the relationship between childhood trauma and suicidality in a sample of adult men. Conclusion: Several important clinical implications were identified in both parts of the thesis portfolio. Firstly, the systematic review identified the need for family members, friends and frontline professionals to explicitly ask children about the possibility of sexual abuse. It was also considered imperative that recipients are supported in responding to disclosures in positive and supportive ways so as to reduce young peoples’ feelings of responsibility, self-blame, shame and guilt. The empirical study concluded that dysfunctional emotion regulation and interpersonal difficulties are implicated in the overall collateral and compounding psychosocial sequelae of childhood trauma. The provision of psychological interventions for men with past and/or present suicidality should support individuals to develop healthy social problem-solving and emotion regulation skills. Providing effective, trauma-informed interventions for these individuals will move their treatment beyond simple risk management and focus, instead, on instilling recovery and resilience.

The alcohol consumption has been one of the biggest concerns of the public health in the world and its causes seem to be associated to the diverse factors, among them, the culture. O significado social da dor pélvica crônica em mulheres com endometriose: abordagem qualitativa por grupos focais / The social significance of chronic pelvic pain in women with endometriosis: qualitative approach by focal groupsBruna Helena Mellado 05 February 2016 (has links)
Este achado é importante para a abordagem multidisciplinar da doença / Objective: Social ties have been associated with outcomes of several chronic conditions. In this study we report perceptions of women with endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain about their social interactions. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study on 29 women with chronic pelvic pain and endometriosis. The study was conducted in a university hospital, localized in the southwest of Brazil, between February 2013 and January 2014. Women were enrolled in six focus groups interviews. Transcripts were analysed according to the grounded theory approach and the emerging categories were coded using the WebQDA platform. Results: Social isolation was the main emerging theme. Social isolation was perceived as associated with lack of understanding about endometriosis symptoms, and with resignation in face of recurrent pain episodes. Avoiding partner intimacy, isolation from family and isolation from friends were components of social isolation. Conclusion: Our study provides evidence that women with endometriosis develop progressive social isolation after the onset of chronic pelvic pain. This finding is important for the multidisciplinary management of the disease
