A Study of Sociometric Perception as Related to Several Other Sociometric Variables

Mathews, Theodore William 08 1900 (has links)
The intent in formulating this study was to examine social perception, as related to several sociometric variables. By social perception is meant the ability of an individual to estimate correctly the feelings of his associates toward him, in terms of their desiring or not desiring him as a close friend.

Instruction type and stereotype threat in analytical reasoning: Can creativity help?

Mitchell, Erica Rachel 01 January 2008 (has links)
Stereotype threat is the fear that a person's behavior or performance will confirm an existing stereotype of a group with which that person identifies. The purpose of this study was to look at the effect of instruction and emphasis on the female performance on an analytical reasoning task. This study tested undergraduate students taking a psychology course from California State University at San Bernardino. In this thesis, the task was framed as either an analytical reasoning task, a creative reasoning task, or there was no framing present. This study found that performance did differ as a result of instruction type, with creative instruction yielding higher scores. Varying instruction type performance can improve performance on an analytical reasoning task.

Discrimination génétique lors de la pré-embauche : élaboration d'une politique d'encadrement

Boucratie, Natalie 10 1900 (has links)
Since the advent of the Ruman Genome Project, discoveries in the field of human genetics have been prolific. As a result of these scientific developments, new genetic tests are now available for a variety of disorders. Although advances in genetic research promise dramatic progress in the treatment and prevention of genetic diseases, they raise concerns about the protection of human rights of individuals such as the possibility of genetic discrimination by employers. With regards to the workplace, genetic information will surely influence hiring praetices. Therefore, such practices will affect public acceptance of new genetic technologies. Considering the issues raised with regards to genetic testing, is the current legislative framework suitable to avoid genetic discrimination in the hiring process? This thesis will attempt to answer this question. We will begin by an overview of genetics and the Ruman Genome Project. We will examine the ethical and legal implications of genetic testing in the workplace. The thesis will focus on three public policy approaches in dealing with genetic discrimination for employment purposes. After outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, we will analyse the state of the law in the province of Québec. At the end of our discussion, we will propose recommendations to deal more efficiently with the increasing fear of genetic discrimination in the workplace and to limit the adverse effects of genetic information in the hiring process.

Interpersonal Reactions to Bereaved Parents: An Exploration of Attachment and Interpersonal Theories

Wilhite, Thomas R. (Thomas Ray) 06 1900 (has links)
The experiment examined negative social reactions to bereaved parents from unrelated others. Both the behavior displayed by the parent and attachment style of the perceiver were expected to influence reactions to bereaved parents. Undergraduates at a southern university (N = 239) completed both attachment measures and measures of reactions to videotapes of bereaved parents. Results indicated that bereaved parents do indeed receive negative evaluations from unrelated others, in the form of decreased willingness to interact in various roles. However, a nonbereaved parent displaying depressive symptoms also received negative evaluations. Depressed targets in the present study did receive negative evaluations, supporting the predictions of Coyne's interpersonal-process theory of reactions to depressed individuals. Contrary to the predictions of interpersonal-process theory, a bereaved parent displaying loss content without depressive symptoms also elicited negative evaluations. Coyne's hypothesis that the amount of induced negative affect in the perceiver leads to negative evaluations was not supported by the data. Subjects appear to react to a complex set of factors when forming these evaluations, including both personal and situational information. Two factors may have undermined the present study s ability to adequately test this theory. Subjects may have perceived depressive symptoms in loss content in the present study. Further, subjects may not have identified with the parent in the present study as anticipated. Research is necessary to identify the amount and focus of subjects' identifications with depressed and bereaved targets. Only minor support was found for the prediction that attachment style would be related to reactions to bereaved parents. Continuous measures of attachment style were related to amount of induced negative affect. However, grouping subjects by attachment patterns was not related to either induced negative affect or evaluations. The present study and previous research suggest the possibility that conceptually attachment may contain several components which relate to behavior in varying degrees and ways. Further study of the components of attachment is necessary to clarify what behaviors are related to attachment disturbance.

The Relation Between Exposure to Intimate Partner Violence and Dating Violence in a Social Information Processing Model Among Young Adults

Chong, Chu Chian 05 1900 (has links)
Dating violence (DV) among young adults, specifically in college settings, is a serious issue with potential severe repercussions – both physically and psychologically – for victims of DV (DV victimization), and even financially on societal institutions as a whole. Exposure to parental intimate partner violence (IPV) has been associated with DV in young adults. Such violent behaviors appear to be associated with a recurrent pattern of aggressive thought processes, content, and arousing emotions. This study investigated the mediating effects of explicit socio-cognitive processes, through the reformulated social information processing (SIP) model, and implicit cognitive processes for exposure to parental IPV on DV perpetration and victimization, as well as the moderating effects of identification with parental figures and emotional arousal for exposure to parental IPV on predicting DV perpetration and victimization. 85 college students (men n = 23, M age = 22.29) were recruited for the study and results revealed that exposure to father-to-mother IPV predicted DV victimization, and that the interaction between exposure to father-to-mother IPV and identification with maternal figure predicted DV victimization. Conversely, identification with a parental figure negatively predicted DV victimization. The results revealed that SIP processes did not mediate the relationship for exposure to parental IPV on DV perpetration, however, SIP process of aggressive responding was positively associated with exposure to father-to-mother IPV and DV perpetration. Next, interaction of exposure to mother-to-father IPV and positive affective arousal is associated with less severe SIP hostile attributions and less positive evaluations of aggression responses. Finally, implicit cognition did not mediate exposure to parental IPV and DV perpetration.
