Conversational resources of two-person psychotherapyKatz, Bruce Allen January 1971 (has links)
The research reported here takes as its data tape-recordings and transcripts of a number of two-person psychiatric interviews, conducted by two psychiatrists with a number of patients of both sexes. The transcripts are analysed by reference to speech acts as units, and the emphasis is on properties common to all speech in natural language. An attempt is made to show (a) that by reference to such unit acts, psychiatric events can be made intelligible, and (b) that an analysis along these lines is in principle capable of "explaining" the interactional mechanisms of the psychiatric interview, without recourse to psychiatric theory as part of the analytic apparatus.
Among issues given special attention are (1) the opening of the psychiatric interview and its consequentiality for further developments, (2) the negotiated character of topics and the availability of interactional devices for controlling topical development, and (3) the accomplishment of "treatment" through "talk".
Findings are reported with respect to each of these issues, but the report should be read chiefly as an exercise in the application of a method of socio-linguistic analysis to a type of data usually reserved for substantive treatment in the area of social psychiatry. / Arts, Faculty of / Sociology, Department of / Graduate

Young School-Age Boys' Use of Social Comparison Standards in Judging Running AbilityUnknown Date (has links)
The purpose of the present descriptive study was to explore the influence of friendship status and running skill on school-age boys' social comparison production. Specifically, the frequency, function, and content of social comparison statements produced before, during, and after a running task were examined. Forty pairs of first and second grade boys were filmed as they: rated their own running ability; rated their classmates' running ability; rated classmates as friends and nonfriends using a sociometric nomination procedure; participated in an interview/timed running task with a partner; and answered a post-race questionnaire. Social comparison statements were identified and coded for content and function from video recordings. Boys primarily liked or loved running, perceived themselves to be "very good" or "excellent" and "very fast" or "fast" runners, and rated friends as being faster runners than nonfriends. Boys made primarily superiority/inferiority statements centered on their running performance and attributes of their performance. No grade differences were found in the frequency, function, and content of children's social comparison statements. While the frequency of social comparison statements did not vary by friendship status, multiple significant differences in social comparison frequency, content, and function were identified when running ability of the comparer, running ability of the comparee, and friendship status were considered together. / A Dissertation Submitted to the Department of Family and Child Sciences in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of

A curriculum plan for the professional education of occupational therapists in NigeriaOsikoya, Francis O. O. January 1987 (has links)
This study was concerned with the planning of a curriculum for training occupational therapists in Nigeria. In doing so, both theoretical and practical matters were considered. First, the thesis identifies the need for occupational therapists in Nigeria, and, based on a literature review, theoretical perspectives and issues about curriculum, and about professional education are gathered and discussed. Secondly, the research for the study was conducted through different practical means. The first part of the research was directed at all the occupational therapists in Nigeria seeking facts and opinions on the occupational therapy situation in the country. A mail questionnaire composed of structured and open-ended questions was used. The second study attempted to find out international perspectives on the training of occupational therapists through a mail questionnaire using open-ended questions, directed at the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Associations in several countries, and all occupational therapy training schools in the United Kingdom. This was followed by a third piece of research in which a case study of the policies and practices of two occupational therapy training programmes in Scotland was carried out, using interviews. ii The findings in these investigations and the issues and arguments derived from the literature on curriculum theory and professional education were considered against the background of Nigeria. The discussion was used to develop principles and to suggest a curriculum for the training of occupational therapists in Nigeria. The study offered some suggestions for future monitoring of the programme and areas of future research in Nigeria

Big Five dimensionerna möter arbetstillfredsställelseAsmar, Nadin, Kallestad, Tommy January 2011 (has links)
