The Life and Times of Alex Doucas: Migrant and Author: Searching for a new identity

Abstract This thesis offers the first detailed critical account of the Greek-Australian writer, Alex Doucas (1900-1962) who came to Australia in 1927 as a migrant from Asia Minor. It attempts to place his work in the perspectives of Greek and Australian literatures and to evaluate his position both as a migrant and as a writer. The Asia Minor Catastrophe and the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey in 1923, as well as the Great Depression he faced in Australia along with many other Australians had a profound effect on his social outlook. Considered one of the pioneers of Greek-Australian Literature, Doucas played an important role in the development of Greek community life in Australia during the pre- and post-World War II periods. His work consists of two published novels (one posthumously) and a significant body of published and unpublished, stories, poems, translations and essays. Out of print for some decades, it remains largely unknown to the general public or even to academic circles in Greece and in Australia. It was, however, a landmark of Greek-Australian Literature and continues to have more than historical interest in its treatment of migration, exile and displacement, and in its use of intercultural perspectives to forge a positive vision for humanity. Although forced into ill-paid manual labour for much of his life after his arrival in Australia, Alex Doucas tried to develop links and relationships with Australian intellectual circles and to become involved in Australian life in the broadest way. At the same time, he never lost contact with social, political and literary developments in Greece. Alex Doucas maintained close relations with both the Greek and Australian literary traditions. As a writer he belongs to the Greek generation of the 1930s and its literary traditions. In his work, he dealt with events which took place in Anatolia before the Asia Minor Catastrophe as well as with the impact the catastrophe had on Greek society. He is one of the first writers of his generation who turned his attention to the “other side of the coin” and investigated the impact of the Catastrophe on the Turkish people. This perspective was adopted mainly due to the openness that he found in Australia, an openness that led to Multiculturalism. Alex Doucas was a multiculturalist before his time. His work is a fine example of the Australian version of Multiculturalism. Through his brother Stratis Doucas (also a writer) and others, he kept himself informed on all sorts of changes and developments in his native country, Greece, especially as it was shaped after the Asia Minor Catastrophe. At the same time, he tried to understand the Australian way of life, its culture and its literary traditions. His bi-cultural position gave him a powerful perspective. He attempted to understand the Australian way of life through his Greekness and to find answers for problematic events that happened in Greece through his Australian experience. Across the entire span of Doucas’s work, it is clear that his political philosophy and his belief in the goals of socialism played a crucial role in his consciousness of himself as a writer whose role was to provide the artistic equivalent of the philosophical basis of Marxism, best expressed in the Theses on Feuerbach (1845) by Marx, in his famous dictum, "Philosophers have hitherto only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it". In other words, it was never enough for Doucas simply to describe in social realist terms the conditions of life and the aspirations of human beings. His aim was to show how these conditions might be changed for the better, not only for the individual, but for the community as a whole. Equally, he wished to show how people’s aspirations, particularly those of an immigrant community familiar with exile, suffering and loss, might be more fully realised.

A cause for animation : Harry Reade and Cuban revolution

This monographic study examines the life of the Australian artist Harry Reade (1927-1998), and his largely overlooked contribution to animation within historical, social, political and cultural contexts of his time. The project constitutes a biography of Reade, tracing his life from his birth in 1927 through to his period of involvement with animation between 1956 and 1969. The biography examines the forces that shaped Reade and the ways in which he tried to shape his world through the medium of animation. It chronicles his experiences as a child living in impoverished conditions during the Great Depression, his early working life, the influence of left wing ideology on his creative development, and his contribution to animation with the Waterside Workers' Federation Film Unit, in Sydney. The study especially focuses on the period between 1961 and 1969 during which Reade supported the Cuban Revolution's social and cultural reform process by writing and directing animated films at the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (Cuban Institute of the Art and Industry of Cinema - ICAIC), in Havana. The thesis argues that Reade played a significant role in the development of Cuban animation during the early years of the Cuban Revolution. Further, his animated work in this cultural sphere was informed by a network of political alliances and social philosophies that were directly linked to his experiences and creative development in Australia. Theoretical approaches to biographical method and animation studies have been used to provide a cohesive framework for an investigation of Reade's life and animation work. The thesis also draws on Reade's autobiography and his animated works, oral histories, newspaper articles, press cartoons, illustrations, photographs, and official government archival documents. This project also has an archival purpose in collecting and compiling Reade's animation work onto CD.

Society writ large: the vision of three Zimbabwean women writers

This study explores the social ‘vision’ of three Shona women writers vis-à-vis their Zimbabwean society, attempting to ascertain whether this vision is entrenched in the post-independence context or has been shaped by the whole canvas of colonization and its impact on Shona society. For this purpose, Tsitsi Dangarembga’s Nervous Conditions (1988), Yvonne Vera’s Why Don’t You Carve Other Animals (1992) and Freedom Nyamubaya’s Dusk of Dawn (1995) have been selected to explore the representation of Zimbabwean society in different artistic genres. The approach is mainly socio-historical, examining the selected texts in the context of Zimbabwean history and paying attention to how the socio-political dynamics in both colonial Rhodesia and post-independence Zimbabwe influence the creative output of Zimbabwean writers, in general, and of the selected writers, in particular. In addition, this study refers to other aspects of literary theory, especially African feminist theories, since all three writers discuss the plight of black African women. This study consists of four chapters arranged according to the historical period in which the texts are set, which coincides with publication date. Chapter One provides a general background to Zimbabwean writing in English to root the study in the socio-historical experiences of the country. This chapter thus considers the works of both white and black writers. Chapter Two discusses Nervous Conditions, critiquing it as a women’s narrative in a social realist mode, because it portrays the social and political forces as significant shapers of human lives. Chapter Three analyzes Why Don’t You Carve Other Animals as a text in the fabulist mode, which re-imagines cultural and literary politics. Nyamubaya’s poetry, discussed in Chapter Four, is autobiographical and ideological. It revisits the Zimbabwean liberation war, situating it within both the private and national spheres, and arguing that such a standpoint emanates from Nyamubaya’s need to make sense of her own experiences during the war and in post-independence Zimbabwe. La représentation romancée de la classe ouvrière à l'époque mi-victorienne en Grande-Bretagne

Ce mémoire a pour objet le socioréalisme victorien, un moment de l’art anglais pendant lequel s’est développée une déclinaison originale de la tendance réaliste qui a laissé sa marque un peu partout en Europe dans le courant du 19e siècle. À une époque où l’Angleterre s’affirme comme le haut lieu de la modernité industrielle, les dures conditions de vie imposées par les transformations socio-économiques en train de s’accomplir trouvent peu à peu à s’exprimer dans les arts, où leur représentation met à mal les canons esthétiques établis et l’idéologie qui les sous-tend. Alors qu’en France la figure du paysan est le plus souvent associée à la vision et au programme des réalistes, c’est vers le prolétaire urbain que vont se tourner des artistes anglais interpellés, à l’instar de certains écrivains, intellectuels, législateurs et spécialistes divers, par les ravages humains que cause la course aveugle vers le progrès et vers le profit. Si le roman « industriel » à la Dickens donne le ton en nous offrant quelques victimes types des bas-fonds de Londres, des illustrateurs emboîtent le pas, notamment grâce à la presse illustrée. Une iconographie du pauvre, où l’enfant et la femme occupent l’avant-scène, se met en place et se diffuse largement grâce à la capacité d’invention que permettent les nouveaux médiums de reproduction mécanique. Le journal The Graphic retient notre attention parce que certains de ses imagiers –Francis Montague Holl (1845-1888), Samuel Luke Fildes (1843-1927) et Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) - ont aussi pratiqué la peinture et transposé, dans des tableaux aux dimensions imposantes, des sujets qu’ils avaient déjà exploités dans la gravure. Prenant pour corpus une production visuelle qui semble avoir pour projet de rendre le réel en direct, dans toute sa dureté, notre mémoire explore cependant les aspects fictionnels et les manipulations rhétoriques auxquelles les imagiers doivent se prêter pour faire passer leur message. Certaines de ces manipulations sont imposées de l’extérieur, par la nécessité de ne pas confronter les bien nantis à une situation de révolte potentielle, mais de les inciter à la charité en les apitoyant sur le sort des plus démunis. D’autres dérivent des médiums eux-mêmes, le passage de la gravure à la peinture et du petit au grand format, de la consommation privée à l’exposition publique, imposant des stratégies compositionnelles et des factures différentes. / The subject of this thesis is Victorian social realism, a spell of British Art during which Realism tends to grow everywhere in Europa during the 19th century. During this period of time, Great Britain reaches its summit with the industrial modernity. At the same time, this fast-changing world is causing a serious class struggle that artists try to represent through a new estheticism and a new ideology. Whereas in France, the figure of the peasant is mostly associated with Realism, British artists relate more to the urban worker and so do novelists, intellectuals, and legislators, who witness the devastation of the human condition caused by the shameless race for progress and profit. Industrial novels written by Dickens introduced a certain type of low-class character of London and illustrators follow the lead in illustrated newspapers. An iconography of the poor, in which the child and the woman are the main characters, starts to take place and spreads largely through the new medium of mechanical reproduction. The illustrated newspaper The Graphic caught our attention because some of its illustrators – Francis Montague Holl (1845-1888), Samuel Luke Fildes (1843-1927), and Sir Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) – were also painters and transposed subjects they already exploited in woodcarving on to canvas. In this thesis, we will explore the fictional aspects and rhetorical manipulations used by the illustrators and the painters to get across their message. Certain of these manipulations are imposed by the historical and political context, by the need of not shocking the rich classes by showing them a potential insurrection, but rather by encouraging charity. Others prefer to change medium, by switching from engraving to painting, form small to big canvas, from private buyers to public exhibition, and thereby imposing new and different compositional strategies.
