The research reported in this thesis is basically applied in purpose. However the theoretical siqnificance of interactional sociolinquistics is explored by showinq that it is based on a philosophy of science which differs
fundamentally from the versions of positivism which have informed linquistics over the years. The research methods consistent with this methodology are also outlined. The applied siqnificance of the sub-field is demonstrated more
qenerally at first by examininq its contribution to the understandinq of the relationship between lanquaqe and context. Thereafter the contribution to the understandinq of this relationship is explored in more specific terms by
examininq the role of contextual information in the form of culturally-specific interactional styles in the accomplishinq of prejudice and neqative cultural stereotypes in intercultural communication in South Africa. The siqnificance
of this explanation is explored further by showinq how such an interactional account fits into a more comprehensive explanation of the causes of discrimination in South Africa, one that includes, also. structural explanations, and explanations in terms of the psycholoqy of individuals. Gendering politeness : speech and act among Zulu second language speakers of the English language on the Durban campus.Ige, Busayo Olamide. January 2000 (has links)
In this thesis. I have moved away from the general question of 'How do women and men behave linguistically?, (Sing and Bergvall. 1996:19) and have turned to investigate in particular how the speech act of apologies contributes to the production of people as 'women and men' (Sing and Bergvall, 1996:19). In other words, the investigation focuses on the effect of politeness strategies on the construction of gender identities. Using poststrucluralist feminist theory as developed primarily by Weedon (1987), this thesis investigates the politeness strategies employed by some Zulu students at the University of Natal, Durban, in their English-medium interactions with African international students. The speech act of apologies is the area of language investigated, with data being collected primarily by means of role-plays and focus groups. The focus of the analysis is limited to the performance of apologies towards non-Zulus by 12 Zulu
male and female students. To this end, the various strategies employed by the respondents were analysed according to the framework developed by Holmes (1989, 1995). In addition, information gathered in the focus groups revealed to what extent politeness strategies are still being transferred from Zulu to English. The strategies employed by these men and women are considered as revealing some of the ways by which politeness contributes to the construction of gender identities, in the University context. On the basis of this limited sample, it is argued that traditional Zulu male masculinity, while still dominant, is now being contested in the University context by some students favouring a less tradition-oriented identity. The strategies employed by the female respondents, on the other hand, suggest that Zulu women students may be beginning to reject traditional Zulu femininity in favour of more westernized identities. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2000.

Intercultural communication and the community of practice in a South African sport teamAlexander, Muneer 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study aims to investigate the impact of individual sociocultural and linguistic differences
on the creation of a successful sports team on and off the field. The specific team of interest
for this particular study is the Western Province amateur cricket team, based in Cape Town,
South Africa. The sociocultural and linguistic differences of the participants were examined
using theories focusing on intercultural communication and the various strategies that can be
put in place to overcome the barriers of intercultural difference within a sports team. To this
end the linguistic repertoires of participants were captured through the use of language
biographies. The study further investigates how participants consider themselves to be a part
of the team’s community of practice (CofP), and seeks to identify obstacles in terms of
acquiring and maintaining membership of this CofP. The data is analysed with the use of
thematic analysis (TA) methodology. In total 17 members of the Western Province amateur
cricket team participated in the study, two coaches and 15 players. They are speakers of
English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. Questionnaires which elicit both personal and linguistic
background information, as well as information on perceived linguistic competence, were used
for data collection. Along with the questionnaires, structured interviews which aimed to
determine language preferences in receiving feedback and level of comfort when
communicating with speakers of different languages and from different cultures, were
conducted. The questionnaire and interview data reflect the linguistic preferences of the
participants, however also show that all participants conform to the team’s lingua franca in
order to understand and communicate openly without misunderstanding. The study shows that
sociocultural and linguistic differences can act as a barrier to a sports team’s dynamic and
environment, but these barriers can be overcome to create a successful and cohesive
community of practice on and off the field. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie het ten doel om die impak van individuele sosiokulturele- en taalverskille op die
skep van 'n suksesvolle sportspan, beide op en van die veld af, te ondersoek. Die spesifieke
span van belang in hierdie studie is die Westelike Provinsie amateur-krieketspan, gebaseer in
Kaapstad, Suid-Afrika. Die sosiokulturele- en taalverskille tussen die deelnemers word met
behulp van teorieë wat op interkulturele kommunikasie fokus en die verskeie strategieë wat
ingestel kan word om die hindernisse van interkulturele verskille binne 'n sportspan te oorkom,
te ondersoek. Vir hierdie doel is die taalrepertoires van deelnemers ingesamel met behulp van
taalbiografieë. Die studie ondersoek ook hoe deelnemers hul lidmaatskap tot praktyk
gemeenskappe beskryf, en poog om struikelblokke in terme van die verwerwing en
instandhouding van hierdie lidmaatskap te identifiseer. Die data is ontleed met die gebruik van
die tematiese analise (TA) metode. In totaal het 17 lede van die Westelike Provinsie amateurkrieketspan
deelgeneem in die studie, twee afrigters en 15 spelers. Hulle is sprekers van
Afrikaans, Engels en isiXhosa. Vraelyste wat beide persoonlike- en taalagtergrondinligting,
asook inligting oor waargenome taalvaardigheid, ontlok, is gebruik vir datainsameling. Saam
met die vraelyste, is gestruktureerde onderhoude, wat daarop gemik is om inligting oor
taalvoorkeure in verband met terugvoer ontvang en vlak van gemak in kommunikasie met
sprekers van ander tale en van ander kulture te ontbloot, gevoer. Die vraelys- en onderhouddata
het die taalvoorkeure van die deelnemers getoon, maar dit het ook getoon dat al die deelnemers
toegang het tot die span se omgangstaal, wat hulle in staat stel om te verstaan en openlik te
kommunikeer sonder enige misverstande. Die studie toon dat sosiokulturele- en taalverskille
as hindernisse tot 'n sportspan se dinamiek en omgewing kan optree, maar ook dat hierdie
hindernisse oorkom kan word om 'n suksesvolle en samehangende praktyk gemeenskap, op en
van die veld af, te skep.

Literacy, orality and recontextualization in the parliament of the Republic of South Africa : an ethnographic studySiebörger, Ian January 2012 (has links)
In parliaments, the tasks of drafting legislation and conducting oversight are accomplished by means of complex chains of spoken, written and multimodal texts. In these genre chains, information is recontextualized from one text to another before being debated in sittings of the houses of parliament. This study employs the point of view afforded by linguistic ethnography to investigate critically the ways in which meanings are recontextualized in one section of such a genre chain, namely the process by which committees of South Africa's National Assembly oversee the budgets of government departments and state-owned entities. It does this to identify possible sources of communication difficulties in this process and suggest ways in which these can be minimized. In so doing, it develops a theoretical model of the discursive effects of recontextualization informed by Latour's (1987) notion of black-boxing as well as Maton's (2011) Legitimation Code Theory. This model uses Interactional Sociolinguistics and elements of Systemic Functional Linguistics, including APPRAISAL and Transitivity as tools to describe the realization of these effects in language. This study finds that ideational and interpersonal meanings are condensed and decondensed at particular points in the genre chain in ways that lead to some MPs’ voices being recontextualized more accurately than others’. It also shows that common sources of communication difficulties in the committee process include differences in political background and understandings of committee procedure and participant roles. It recommends that representatives of departments and entities reporting to the committees should receive a fuller prebriefing on their roles; that MPs should receive training on asking clear, focused questions; and that the role of committee secretaries as procedural advisors should be strengthened.

A sociolinguistic profile of Mamelodi and Atteridgeville : its role in language policy development at local government levelStrydom, Louise 22 June 2005 (has links)
This research project seeks to gain insight into the sociolinguistic realities of Mamelodi and Atteridgeville, two residential areas that resort under the Tshwane Metropolitan Council's jurisdiction (formerly known as the Greater Pretoria Metropolitan Area) - including reference to language use, knowledge, behaviour, status and attitudes. A questionnaire reflecting the principles of inter-methodological cross-validation was developed as research instrument in order to attain a sociolinguistic profile of the areas under investigation. The gathering, analysis, and verification of the research results took place against the background of extensive literature study, as well as the implementation of both quantitative (interpretation and analysis of numerical data) and qualitative (questionnaire format resembling a structured interview) methods. Other general aims of this research project are to provide local decision-makers with information that might aid the language planning process, and to provide a future basis for comparison to identify the occurrence of potential sociolinguistic change. The planning and implementation of a local language policy cannot occur in isolation, and it is therefore necessary to set the background against which language-related decisions are made - on local and international level. The challenges faced by the South African government are inseparably linked to matters evolving around the role of language in governance, education, economy and development. It will be argued that South Africa formally committed itself to multilingualism by entrenching it in the Constitution and in the proposed Languages Bill. It will furthermore be argued that languages have a market value and are thus to be regarded as economic resources. If the national ideals are to be met in terms of democratically developing the nation, all citizens must have equal access to all the rights and privileges of the country. In order to realise the strategic goals listed in the proposed South African Languages Bill, namely to facilitate individual empowerment and national development, and to facilitate economic development via the promotion of multilingualism, it is thus imperative that the Tshwane Municipal Council implements and enforces language policies that reflect these goals. Since municipalities must take into account the language usage and preferences of their residents and at least use two official languages - the logical conclusion is that a plan of language policy implementation should be supported and institutionalised by means of legislation and other measures. The Tshwane Metropolitan Council, and all other municipal structures - by implementing reality-based language policies that meet the developmental needs of its citizens by promoting and investing in multilingualism - will ascertain equal access to knowledge and skills. The ultimate purpose of this whole debate surrounding language planning and policy implementation in a multilingual African state is not merely to arrive at a theoretical linguistic solution, but rather to meet the socio-economic developmental needs of its people. / Thesis (DPhil (Linguistics))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Afrikaans / unrestricted

Traditional healers are one among professionals that are viewed as the most significant people in African Society. They are accorded the highest esteem because of the role they play in saving people’s lives and promoting cultural aspects such as ukuhlonipha amasiko in isiZulu. It should be remembered that this word ukuhlonipha which means to respect, is used across cultures to maintain peace within family and society. It all depends on which culture promotes it more than others. It is sociolinguistic truism that ukuhlonipha is essentially linked to the ubuntu philosophy of African people. However, traditional healers more than other people follow ukuhlonipha culture in numerous ways, especially when they meet, being consulted and during traditional ceremonies. They serve and promote what in IsiZulu is known as ukuhlonipha, which to the uninitiated and sometimes even to the scholars of this philosophy is a mystery. It is for this reason and others that people view them as the soul of society.

and as image, is positioned in a metaphorical relationship to reality. Language,
as a structure of representation, is the way in which we represent reality to
ourselves and to others and recreate the past, as well as the way in which we
invest our lives with meaning, significance and experience. Language includes
visual and verbal representation, and this investigation shows how image and
text create a variety of multiple meanings through playful and interactive
reciprocation.
Following from the assumption that language comprises temporal and spatial
qualities, it is also the terrain that enables us to know and understand reality,
ourselves, and others. This emphasizes the material nature of language, which
is also connected with social and cultural practices and, as such, involves
reciprocation and interaction between divergences. Language is therefore a
mode of action that makes the bridging of divisions possible.
Language is proposed as a medium through which the monolithic hegemony of
the apartheid past may be confronted within a multicultural South Africa. The aim
of representing this past in my work is not to recall it as it was or to discover
etemal, inheritable qualities, but rather to bring about re-demption (healing)
through re-presentation. Re-demption and re-presentation is a textual practice
that involves a re-script of the past. With the understanding that history and
culture are regarded as text, re-writing the past does not involve representation
as mimesis, but as production.
This investigation recognizes the role of the subconscious as the other or the
alterity in all language constructs that makes it possible to circumvent the logic of
binary oppositions; entertain alternatives simultaneously; erase boundaries;
share spaces, and discover the other in the self. This unconscious language of
the other, as a strange doubling and interplay between near and far, gives rise to
poies/s.
The creation of multi-dimensional spaces that draw the poetical and the everyday
into an imaginative and directed conceptual interplay as well as provoke dialogue
between differences and diversities, engenders a desire for the complexity of the
other. The interplay and recurrent movement across divisions and between
paradoxes create a new and changed interspace, characterized by difference,
plurality, and contradiction. Intertextual spaces allow relationships between
differences and exist precisely as a result of dialogicity between diversities. In this
way it is possible to establish, by virtue of difference, a mutual, interdependent
relationship with the other.
Metaphorical language requires an allegorical reading that places divergences in
relation to one another, thereby causing a mythic animation of signification that
moves from one level to another. Mytho-poeisis, as an allegorical structure, is
proposed as a model by means of which symbolic transformation and redemption
of the personal and collective psyche may occur. Poetic re-imagining
as re-presentation impels change and transformation and points to other possible
forms of social and ethical experiences. This impulse, to reconcile the social and
the aesthetic, or the cultural with symbolic form, is based on the principle of
reconciliation between art and life. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie ondersoek handhaaf die veronderstelling dat taal in 'n metaforiese
verhouding tot die werklikheid staan as voorstelling en as beeld. Taal, as 'n
struktuur van voorstelling, is die wyse waarop ons die werklikheid aan onsself en
ander voorstel en die verlede herskep, asook die wyse waarop ons sin, betekenis
en ervaring aan ons lewens verskaf. Taal sluit visuele en verbale voorstellings in
en hierdie ondersoek toon op watter wyse beeld en teks in speelse en
interaktiewe wisselwerking 'n verskeidenheid meersinnige betekenisse skep.
Uitgaande van die veronderstelling dat taal temporele en ruimtelike kwaliteite
betrek, is dit ook die terrein wat ons in staat stel om die werklikheid, onsself en
ander te ken en verstaan. Dit beklemtoon die materiele aard van taal, wat ook
met sosiale en kulturele praktyke verbind is en sodanig wisselwerking en
interaksie tussen uiteenlopendhede betrek. Taal is dus 'n modus van doen, wat
oorbrugging van skeidings moontlik maak.
Taal word as 'n medium voorgestel waardeur die monolitiese hegemonie van die
apartheidsverlede binne 'n multikulturele Suid-Afrika gekonfronteer word.
Voorstelling van hierdie verlede in my werk is nie met die doel om dit te herroep
soos dit was, of ewige, erfbare eienskappe te ontdek nie, maar eerder om herstel
deur her-voorstelling te bewerkstellig. Her-stel en her-voorstelling is 'n
tekstuele praktyk wat 'n re-skripsie van die verlede behels. Met begrip dat
geskiedenis en kultuur as teks beskou word, behels die her-skryf van die verlede
nie voorstelling as mimesis nie, maar as produksie.
Hierdie ondersoek erken die rol van die onderbewussyn as die ander of die
alteriteit (alterity) in alle taalvoorstellings wat dit moontlik maak om die logika van
binere oposisies te omseil; alternatiewe gelyktydig in ag te neem; grense uit te
wis, ruimtes te deel en die ander in die self te ontdek. Hierdie onbewuste taal
van die ander, as 'n vreemde verdubbeling en spel tussen naby en ver, gee
aanleiding tot poesis (poiesis).
Die skep van multidimensionele ruimtes wat die poetiese en die alledaagse in 'n
verbeeldingryke en gerigte konseptuele wisselspel betrek, asook dialoog tussen
verskille en diversiteite bewerkstellig, skep 'n aandrang vir die kompleksiteit van
die ander. Die interspel en ewigdurende beweging oor skeidings en tussen
paradokse skep 'n nuwe en veranderde interruimte, wat gekenmerk word deur
verskil, pluraliteit en kontradiksie. Intertekstuele ruimtes laat verskilsverhoudings
toe en bestaan juis as gevolg van dialogisiteit tussen diversiteite. Op hierdie
wyse is dit moontlik om op grond van verskil 'n wedersydse en interafhanklike
verhouding met die ander aan te knoop.
Metaforiese taalgebruik verg 'n allegoriese lees wat uiteenlopendhede in
verhouding tot mekaar plaas sodat dit 'n mitiese animasie van betekening
bewerkstellig wat vanaf een vlak na 'n ander vlak beweeg. Mito-poesis, as 'n
allegoriese struktuur, word voorgestel as model waarvolgens simboliese
transformasie en herstel van die persoonlike en kollektiewe psige kan geskied.
Poetiese her-verbeelding as her-voorstelling motiveer verandering en
transformasie en dui op ander moontlike vorms van sosiale en etiese ervarings.
Hierdie impuls, om die sosiale en die estetiese, of om die kulturele met
simboliese vorm te vereenselwig, berus op die beginsel van versoening tussen
kuns en lewe.
