Evaluation of Problem Driven Software Process Improvement

Carleson, Hannes, Lyth, Marcus January 2016 (has links)
Software development is constantly growing in complexity and several newtools have been created with the aim to manage this. However, even with thisever evolving range of tools and methodology, organizations often struggle withhow to implement a new development-process, especially when implementingagile methods. The most common reason for this is because teams implementagile tools in an ad-hoc manner, without fully considering the effects this cancause. This leads to teams trying to correct their choice of methodologysomewhere during the post-planning phase, which can be devastating for aproject as it adds further complexity to the project by introducing new problemsduring the transition process. Moreover, with an existing range of tools aimedat managing this process transition, none of them have been thoroughlyevaluated, which in turn forms the problem that this thesis is centred around. This thesis explores a method transition scenario and evaluates a SoftwareProcess Improvement method oriented around the problems that theimprovement process is aiming to solve. The goal with this is to establish ifproblem oriented Software Process Improvement is viable as well as to providefurther data for the extensive research that is being done in this field. We wishto prove that the overall productivity of a software development team can beincreased even during a project by carefully managing the transition to newmethods using a problem driven approach. The research method used is of qualitative and inductive character. Data iscollected by performing a case study, via action research, and literature studies. The case study consists of iteratively managing a transition over to newmethods, at an organization in the middle of a project, using a problem drivenapproach to Software Process Improvement. Three iterations of methodimprovement are applied on the project and each iteration acts as an evaluationon how well Problem Driven Software Process Improvement works.By using the evaluation model created for this degree project, the researchershave found that problem driven Software Process Improvement is an effectivetool for managing and improving the processes of a development team.Productivity has increased with focus on tasks with highest priority beingfinished first. Transparency has increased with both development team andcompany having a clearer idea of work in progress and what is planned.Communication has grown with developers talking more freely about userstories and tasks during planning and stand-up meetings. The researchersacknowledge that the results of the study are of a limited scope and alsorecognize that further evaluation in form of more iterations are needed for acomplete evaluation.

En enkätstudie rörande systemutvecklingsansatser och   metodologier

Isaksson, Leonard January 2019 (has links)
This study has   focused on system development approaches and system development   methodologies. The purpose of the study has been to present a view on the   current situation of different development approaches (agile, traditional,   iterative and hybrid) and methodologies by highlighting the situation from a   number of perspectives. Questions that are answered are: which system   development approaches and methodologies that can be said to be most   frequently used based on the respondents, if the mentioned approaches can be   given certain characteristics based on a selection of factors and the   respondents' attitude towards the approach they practice. The study has been   conducted as a survey where the answers have been obtained via social media.   The result shows that agile methodologies dominate and that they are often   included in various forms of hybrid and agile approaches. Furthermore, it has   not been possible to create an in-depth knowledge of the approaches based on   the selected factors. Finally, it is noted that project members who practice   an agile approach have a great confidence in the approach and have a strong   conviction that it contributes to increase the quality of the software.

Definition and establishment of software factory processes in an IT organization of the public sector.

Nomura, Luzia 07 April 2008 (has links)
A growing number of software producing companies have adopted an organizational model of Software Factory (SF), which facilitates outsourcing by segmenting activities and by adopting a more flexible, dynamic and controlled production system. A SF can serve the multiple demands of different nature and scopes with the purpose of providing each customers specific needs. Because of the diversity and complexity of this context, one of the main issues to be solved is how to map all the processes involved, clearly identifying what, who and mainly how each work must be executed and controlled, aiming at aligning the processes to the organizational and conceptual structure of SF focusing on the integration, aligning and reuse processes. The purpose of this study is mapping, defining, restructuring and establishing the Software Factory process, conducted by the action research method in a software producing organization of the public sector, considering its operational, technical and organizational culture context. The development, execution, follow-up and results are described by the action research cycles involving the study of organizational structures, system development methodologies and organizational changes. For this, a Reference Organizational Structure of SF, and Processes Definition Architecture for SF and a Integration System Development Methodology with organizational focus were defined, conceived and developed based on the literature, professional experience and empirical research, which served as a guiding line of the action research, peaking at the association of the empirical study with the theoretical study. The generated empirical and theoretical contributions refer to the improvement of the organizational and operational processes based on the SF concepts.

Souza, Osnete Ribeiro de 06 May 2005 (has links)
Os processos de Apoio visam auxiliar outros processos do ciclo de vida da aplicação a alcançar produtos de qualidade e o sucesso do projeto / Within a short period, the Web has become the central aspect of many applications in different areas. / A Six Sigma contribution for software process improvement.

Tonini, Antonio Carlos 21 September 2006 (has links)
Aligning sistematically efforts to solve problems and improve the software process with business goals is one of the challenges of software development. Six Sigma is a structured methodology that increases the process quality and aligning with enterprise strategies, providing high financial returns for those who uses it. Firstly applied in manufacturing companies, Six Sigma has been applied in other sectors too. It is not widely used in the software companies yet, but there are already some successful cases. The main objective of this master degree dissertation is to propose a specific roadmap for the Six Sigma application at software companies. Besides the theoretical research, it is accomplished a multiple case study to analyze the adoption reasons, the modalities of the use, the benefits and the limitations of Six Sigma for the software processes. The observed results show that Six Sigma could be applied totally or partially for software process improvement. Therefore it is necessary some tayloring in the Six Sigma processes, because improvement projects could refer for new products or new customers or some of the development work is in charge of new teams, specially when they are a outsoursing. The work has concluded that Six Sigma could contribute indeed to software process improvement, independently the enterprise is going to reach higher level maturity. This study suggests also a specific three-stage-roadmap, called SW-DMAIC, for the Six Sigma application at software companies containing processes for implementation of Six Sigma?s philosophy, recycling this philosophy when it?s necessary and, execution of specific Six Sigma projects.

Modelo de gestão do processo de venda e desenvolvimento de software on-demand para MPE\'s / Management model of selling and on-demand software development process

Jubileu, Andrea Padovan 16 December 2008 (has links)
The majority of the software development micro and small companies are turned to the development of on-demand software. Usually, for these small companies the formalization of a standard process for software development is very difficult. For that reason the goal of this research is to propose an integration of capability processes models/standards within software life cycle models, in a perspective of business process management. The main result of this research is a management model of selling and on-demand software development process, which embraces the software process improvement method and the selling and on-demand software development process model. The software process improvement method was build from complementary and existents tailored approaches for micro and small companies. The selling and on-demand software development process model was created based on the models/standards of process capability CMMI-DEV and ISO/IEC 15504-5 and on the unified process framework, allowing the process view from two perspectives - phases and knowledge areas. The model was elaborated in an iterative and evolutionary action-research process carried out within two micro and small companies. The originality of this proposal is the consideration of software sale activities jointly with software development process, assisting the scope delimitation of a software development project for contractual agreement. Other aspect of this research which makes it distinctive is the detail of the process activities by mean of tasks, suggestions of people roles for each activities and provision of templates with examples for each artifact created during the activities.

Knowledge Management in Software Process Improvement

Bjørnson, Finn Olav January 2007 (has links)
Reports of software a development projects that miss schedule, exceeds budget and deliver products with poor quality are abundant in the literature. Both researchers and the industry are seeking methods to counter these trends and improve software quality. Software Process Improvement is a systematic approach to improve the capabilities and performance of software organizations. One basic idea is to assess the organizations’ current practice and improve their software process on the basis of the competencies and experiences of the practitioners working in the organization. A major challenge is to create strategies and mechanisms for managing relevant and updated knowledge about software development and maintenance. Insights from the field of knowledge management are therefore potentially useful in software process improvement efforts to facilitate the creation, modification, and sharing of software processes in any organization. In the work presented in this thesis, we have made an overview of empirical studies on the effect of knowledge management in software engineering. We have categorized these studies according to a framework and we report findings on the major concepts that have been investigated empirically, as well as the research methods applied within the field. We have also investigated two main strategies for knowledge management, codification and personalization, through the application of four concrete methods in a software process improvement setting: Mentoring, Rational Unified Process, Process Workshops and Post Mortem Analysis. We have classified the work in this thesis within three main themes: RT1: Previous research on knowledge management in software engineering. RT2: Application of knowledge management to improve the software process through codification of knowledge. RT3: Application of knowledge management to improve the software process through personalization of knowledge. The main contributions are: C1: An overview of the research literature on empirical studies of knowledge management in software engineering. C2: A method for tailoring the Rational Unified Process to the development process of a software consulting company. C3: Improvements of the Process Workshops method by contextualization. C4: Improvement of the root-cause analysis phase of the lightweight Post Mortem Analysis for more effective project retrospectives. C5: Proposed methods to increase the learning effect of mentor programs in software engineering.

Improving Practices in a Small Software Firm: An Ambidextrous Perspective

Napier, Nannette 05 December 2007 (has links)
Despite documented best practices and specialized tools, software organizations struggle to deliver quality software that is on time, within budget, and meets customer requirements. Managers seeking improved software project outcomes face two dominant software paradigms which differ in their emphasis on upfront planning, customer collaboration, and product documentation: plan-driven and agile. Rather than promoting one approach over the other, this research advocates improving software management practices by developing the organization’s ambidextrous capability. Ambidextrous organizations have the ability to simultaneously succeed at two seemingly contradictory capabilities (e.g. discipline and agility) which leads to enhanced organizational performance. Overall, this study asks the question: How can an ambidextrous perspective facilitate improvement in software practices? Driven by this question, and based on a two year action research study at a small software firm, TelSoft, the objectives of this research are to: 1. Identify dualities involved in improving software practices 2. Design interventions based on these dualities to improve software practices 3. Explore the process of becoming an ambidextrous software organization The resulting dissertation consists of a summary and four papers that each identify and address particular dualities encountered during software process improvement. The first paper asserts that both process-driven and perception-driven inquiry should be used during assessment of software practices, presents a model that shows how this combination can occur, and demonstrates the use of this model at TelSoft. The second paper explicates two theories for understanding and resolving issues in requirements engineering practice – repeat-ability and response-ability – and argues for the need to negotiate between the two. The third paper identifies a tension between managing legacy and current processes and proposes a model for software process reengineering, a systematic process for leveraging legacy processes created during prior SPI efforts. Finally, the fourth paper applies the theoretical lens of ambidexterity to understand the overall change initiative in terms of the tension between alignment and adaptability. The study used a variety of data sources to diagnose software practices, including semi-structured interviews, software process documents, meeting interactions, and workshop discussions. Subsequently, we established, facilitated, and tracked focused improvement teams in the areas of customer relations, requirements management, quality assurance, project portfolio management, and process management. Furthermore, we created and trained two management teams with responsibility for ongoing management of SPI and project portfolio management respectively. We argue that these activities improved software practices at TelSoft and provided a stronger foundation for continuous improvement. Keywords: Ambidexterity, software process improvement (SPI), action research, requirements engineering assessment, action planning, software process reengineering, software management.

A Framework to Integrate Software Process Improvements in Agile Software Development

Polavarapu, Sharen, Jami, Amulya Sagarwal January 2016 (has links)
Context: There has been a substantial growth of organizations adoptingAgile software development methodologies for various reasons. The requirementof improving the software processes with respect to traditional softwaredevelopment was clear and evident for different reasons. But the need forSoftware Process Improvements (SPI) in Agile context is unclear and thechallenges faced during the implementation of SPI in Agile software developmentare quite ambiguous. These two issues lie as a motivation for theobjectives of our study. Agile being a flexible way of software development, having a non-flexible framework is almost incompatible for implementingSPI in Agile software development. This acts as an inducement for buildingup our final objective. Objectives: The objectives of this research is to identify the need of Agile-SPI in software industry, challenges faced in implementing Agile-SPI atorganizational level and at team level and finally propose an approach forimplementing Agile-SPI based on improving practices. Methods: In order to achieve the objectives of our research, we initiallycarried out a survey, later cross verified and validated the data obtained inthe surveys through interviews. Literature review was performed to gainknowledge over the background and related work. Results: A total of 34 responses were obtained through survey. Theseresponses obtained through survey are further cross verified and validatedthrough 9 interviews. The data obtained through survey has been analyzedthrough descriptive statistics and the data obtained through interviews wasanalyzed using thematic coding. Conclusions: The need of Agile-SPI and the challenges faced by the organizationsand teams while implementing SPI in Agile software developmentwere identified. A total of 16 needs of Agile-SPI, 30 challenges faced byorganization and 37 challenges faced by team were drawn from survey andinterviews conducted. Finally, a conceptual framework has been proposedto implement SPI in Agile environment based on improving practices.
