Vnitrodruhová zpětná vazba mezi rostlinou a půdou jako mechanismus invazivnosti neofytů České republiky / Intraspecific plant-soil feedback as a mechanism underlying invasiveness of neophytes of the Czech RepublicKnobová, Pavlína January 2017 (has links)
Intraspecific plant-soil feedback is a relationship in which plant affects the composition of the soil and such modified soil affects growth of the same plant species. This relationship and its intensity may be linked with plant dominance and invasiveness. Dominant species can alter the composition of the soil in their favor and thus show positive intraspecific plant-soil feedback. As the invasive species are commonly being dominant in their new environment, it can be expected that intraspecific positive plant-soil feedback could be an important factor allowing the invasive species to achieve their dominant position and become invasive. To test if the existence of positive intraspecific feedback could be a general mechanism underlying plant invasiveness I compared intraspecific plant-soil feedback in a group of invasive and introduced, but non-invasive, plants in the Czech Republic. I did this using a preselected set of 34 species - 17 invasive and 17 non-invasive. For realization of the project I used the method of two-phase experiment. The first phase is called soil conditioning - influencing of soil by the plant. In the second phase the same plant species are planted in conditioned soil from the first phase and in control (unconditioned) soil. Then I compared plant biomass from conditioned and...

Druhová diverzita pastvin a luk na malé prostorové škále / Species diversity of meadows and pastures on small spatial scaleBartoš, Michael January 2011 (has links)
Grazing seems to be not only means of conserving species diversity of grasslands but also - in many cases - of its increasing. This thesis tries to find out the mechanisms of grazing that result in increased or decreased species diversity. The experiment was proceeded in Slupenec, a part of Český Krumlov, where horse pastures are situated. In order to compare grazing and mowing I collected phytosociological data from plots 1 x 1 mš. I also collected data about soil moisture, composition and pH in order to find out the main gradients in vegetation. The vegetation data from plots 20 x 20 cmš were collected before and after grazing on three pasturelands. In the chosen locality, higher level of plant species diversity have been proven on pastures in comparison with meadows. There is significantly higher percentage of plots contributing to the higher level of ß diversity on pastures than on meadows. At the same time the variability of vegetation was in most cases explained by the categorial variable pasture / meadow. Concerning selectivity of grazing, it has been proven that horses prefer grazing on species with greater cover abundance. The plots with lower rate of grazed species have got higher ß diversity. In terms of functional traits of plants, it has been proven that higher percentage of no-rosette...

Flows Form Forests: The Mangrove Groundwater Feedback Model MANGABathmann, Jasper 20 January 2022 (has links)
Due to the wide range of provided ecosystem services of mangroves, their conservation, maintenance, and restoration is of major public interest. The distribution of species and plant growth forms in mangrove ecosystems is patterned in zones. The characteristics of these zonation patterns can provide evidence on ecosystem properties. There is ongoing discussion on the drivers leading to mangrove zonation. No full mechanistic explanation to understand the complete interaction of the multiple factors that determine the mangrove zonation patterns exists. Therefore, the underlying processes require deeper evaluation. This will help to better design mangrove conservation projects, and allow more reliable projections of ecosystem development in a changing climate.
Numerical and conceptual modelling facilitates the understanding of system dynamics. In this work, I present the process- and individual-based mangrove population dynamics model MANGA. The mechanistic modelling approach is based on first principles. With the full coupling between a groundwater flow model and an individual-based mangrove growth model, MANGA provides a novel approach to study mangrove ecosystem dynamics.
MANGA describes observed mangrove stand zonation in species distribution and plant growth forms as the consequence of the apparent site conditions such as hydrologic conductivity, porewater salinity distribution and the tidal regime.
Model parameterization does not only depend on empirical evidence.Knowledge on the underlying processes can also be used for model calibration. Varying model boundary conditions and parameters provides insights to the influence of a variety of abiotic drivers on mangrove zonation. The MANGA model is capable to simulate the reaction of mangrove ecosystem to variations of environmental conditions related to climate change. According to MANGA simulations, for example, mangrove species composition depends on freshwater inputs which alter with varying precipitation regimes.
Based on the presented applications of the mechanistic modelling approach, I discuss benefits and current limitations, and outline possible future use of the MANGA model.

Effects of mass death on community structure and ecosystem functionJones, Abby Kimpton 09 August 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Death and decomposition are natural processes that are generally well-understood. However, large events of death, such as mass mortality events (MMEs) are increasing in frequency and their impacts on the ecosystem are largely unknown. These events may have both bottom-up effects from increased nutrient input as well as top-down effects from loss of an ecological functional group by the affected population. Different functional MMEs may result in different top-down effects, creating cascading effects. In Chapter 1, I test the hypothesis that scavenger and herbivore simulated MMEs generate novel bottom-up and top-down effects. Results indicate that MMEs have a significant effect on communities, including on soil chemistry, plant tissue, soil microbes, and soil arthropods. Carrion effects on the community were both a result of biomass (MMEs vs. single carcasses) as well as functional group exclusion (herbivores, scavengers).
Further, MMEs may also generate long-lasting community effects due to the size and nature of the disturbance. In Chapter 3, I evaluated the potential long-term of effects of MMEs by sampling an experimental MME that was conducted four years earlier. I found that MMEs generated long-term asymmetrical effects on ecosystems, with some noticeable changes in increased soil nutrients as well as an unexpected effect of biomass on aboveground arthropod communities, with very little effect on belowground soil arthropods.
However, studies of long-term decomposition from mass carcasses may expand beyond studying MMEs. Composting of carrion is a continuous disturbance event, with numerous carcasses being deposited in the same location over a longer period of time. In Chapter 2, I analyzed potential effects on the surrounding community at a unique instance of concentrated carcass disposal (5 years old). Significant differences were revealed between samples taken near the compost pit (0 m, 5 m) compared to further distances (10 m, 25 m, 50 m) with calcium being increased away from the pit, different soil microbial communities at the pit than farther distances and increased aboveground arthropod abundance at the pit. These experiments provide us with a greater, holistic understanding of previously understudied events of mass death on community structure and ecosystem function.

An investigation of the level of selected trace metals in plant species within the vicinity of tantalum mining area in Gatumba, Ngororero District, RwandaGakwerere, François 02 April 2013 (has links)
Due to mining activities, the natural vegetation cover in Gatumba area was removed and replaced either by crops or bare wasteland with reduced available arable land. The main aim of the study was to assess the impact of the mining activities on the plant mineral uptake and the dynamics of the vegetation. The vegetation in this area under investigation was diversified and heterogeneous. Trace element concentrations in soils were similar to those in plant parts but some elements were highly concentrated in soils than in plants. According to the bioaccumulation factors of the analyzed trace elements in plant parts, two categories of plants were identified, and these are excluders and accumulators. No toxic levels of the evaluated trace elements were found in the analyzed plant samples. As a recommendation for the adaptation of plants to Gatumba mining environment, the most useful plant species for the revegetation/restitution of the technosols should be Sesbania sesban, Crotalaria dewildemaniana and Tithonia diversifolia subject to further experiments on trace elements bioaccumulation and organic matter production / Environmental Sciences / M.A. Science (Environmental Sciences)

Aplicação foliar de fósforo, metabolismo fotossintético e produtividade do feijoeiro comum sob déficit hídrico. / Foliar phosphorus application, photosynthetic metabolism and yield of common bean under water deficit.Santos, Mauro Guida dos 11 March 2005 (has links)
The effects of foliar Pi supplying (Pi) on stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthesis (A) were measured in genotypes, A320, Carioca and Ouro Negro, grown under greenhouse condition. Measurements of gs and A were taken one day after Pi application (10 g L-1) on well-irrigated plants, and during drought stress period beginning two or five days after Pi supplying. During the day after Pi application, it was not observed any difference on gas exchange of genotypes (Carioca and Ouro Negro) due to the treatments with and without Pi. During water stress, the Pi supplying did not cause increase of gs, however, caused increase of A at 0900, 1200 and 1500 h in both genotypes. This effect was higher when considered Ouro Negro at 1200 h. The intrinsic water use efficiency (IWUE) was also increased in Pi-supplied plants. The Pi supplying caused increase on pod number of Ouro Negro plants under water deficit. These results suggest that the foliar Pi application may reduce the effect of water deficit on photosynthesis when supplied two days before the water withholding. In addition, the O2 evolution (Ac) on Ouro negro with extra Pi was higher than for A320, with or without Pi, at the last day of the mild water deficit, and it was higher than A 320 with extra Pi at rehydration. The non-photosynthetic quenching (NPQ), was higher for A320 without Pi at recovery, probably due to the smaller values of A at this treatment. The use of ammonium phosphate, instead of urea or ammonium sulphate to be applied as usual 25 DAS, is recommended.

Variability of Infiltration Characteristics and Water Yield of a Semi Arid CatchmentNnaji, Soronadi, Sammis, Ted W., Evans, Daniel D. 12 April 1975 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1975 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 11-12, 1975, Tempe, Arizona / Space-time variability in the hydrologic characteristics of four major soil series represented in the Silverbell validation site was investigated by sampling the infiltration characteristics, at randomly selected locations, under several vegetative covers within each series. The experimental data was the time distribution of infiltration which, for each sampled location, was fitted by least squares to the Philip's infiltration equation. The parameters of this equation have physical interpretation and therefore were used as measures of the infiltration characteristics. Analysis of variance was used to investigate the spatial variability in the parameters. The mean values of the parameters for selected soil-vegetation combinations were used to simulate runoff due to a rainfall event over a desert catchment "containing" the given combination. Statistical tests show that there is no significant difference among the infiltration parameters of all the soil-vegetation combinations. However, the statistically insignificant variations in the parameters produce significant variations in simulated runoff volumes indicating the sensitivity of the runoff generating process to infiltration characteristics vis-a-vis the hydrologic properties of the soils.

Variations in Soil Moisture Under Natural VegetationSammis, T. W., Weeks, D. L. 16 April 1977 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1977 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 15-16, 1977, Las Vegas, Nevada / Soil water content was measured every two weeks during 1974-1975, using a neutron probe, at selected locations around the desert plant species creosote (Larria divaricata), bursage (Ambrosia deltoidea), and in an open space. The purpose of taking the measurements was to enable one to estimate the evapotranspiration rate of the desert plants by measuring soil moisture depletion. The sampling problem associated with measuring soil moisture, using neutron access tubes, is the number, location, and installation depth of the tubes. Analyses of the total soil moisture beneath the creosote plant showed greater variability between access tubes located near different plants the same distance from the crown of the plant than between tubes located around the same plant. Because of the size of the bursage plant, the variability in total soil moisture beneath the plant was greater among tubes around the same plant than between tubes at the same location at different plants.

Je aktivita ligninolytických enzymů při rozkladu opadu závislá na obsahu fenolických látek? / Does ligninolytic enzyme activity depend on phenolics content during the litter decomposition?APPLOVÁ, Markéta January 2010 (has links)
The aim of the study was to determine the influence of phenolics content and inoculation with soil extract on microbial respiration, on the phenoloxidase (PhOx), peroxidase (PerOx) and newly Mn-peroxidase (MnP) activity in two dominating litter samples (Calamagrostis villosa and Picea abies) differing in phenolics content from Plešné and Čertovo lake watersheds. At PhOx and PerOx activity, the dependence on incubation temperature with L-DOPA was estimated. PhOx and MnP activities significantly increased with higher content of hardly decomposable phenolics, but decreased with water extractable phenolics content. Inoculation with soil extract had no influence on microbial respiration, enzyme activity, nor on decomposition of phenolics. Microbial respiration was significantly higher at 10°C, but average enzyme activity was comparable at 0 and 10°C. PhOx activities had temperature optimum higher than 22°C, while PerOx activities had temperature optimum at 0 - 15°C.
