This thesis examines representations of the French educational system in Senegal as presented in L'aventure ambiguë and L'appel des arènes. Each unfolding respectively within a colonial and postcolonial Senegalese context, the novels problematize the French school system by incorporating representations of its failures. As this thesis will argue, analyzing each author's educational discourse will unmask a Senegalese perspective on a French institution, showcase various ways that Senegalese students internalized their educational experience and provide representations of the ways in which French education could be, and was, utilized by its pupils. Using two African novels in French to interpret historical experience will facilitate understanding of the French educational system from a Senegalese perspective. The first chapters create a foundation for analysis: Chapter two explains French goals and objectives when implementing a formal educational system in West Africa, while chapter three explores the form and function of the African novel in order to present it as a useful historical tool. Having defined the African novel in French as a viable means to interpret historical experience, chapter four focuses analysis on revealing how a system that was meant to procure French dominance, was ultimately transformed into a tool for Senegalese advantage. / Master of Arts

Effects of dried distillers grains with solubles on pork loin quality and sow fat quality

Houser / Two experiments were conducted to determine the effects of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on pork loin and fat quality. In the first experiment, 1,160 barrows (PIC) were used in a 70-d study to determine the influence of DDGS and glycerol on pork loin and fat quality attributes. Barrows were fed a corn-soybean meal based diet with the addition of selected levels of DDGS (0 or 20%) and glycerol (0, 2.5, or 5%) feed stuffs. Loins from the two heaviest pigs in each pen were removed for evaluation of pork loin and fat quality. Experiment two was a pilot study, in which eight non-pregnant sows were fed either 0 or 50% DDGS with a corn soybean meal based diet for 92-d. In the first experiment, there were no DDGS x glycerol interactions for purge loss %, instrumental color (L*a*b*), visual color, marbling score, drip loss %, visual color, pH, Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), cook loss %, myofibrillar tenderness, juiciness, pork flavor intensity, connective tissue amount, and overall tenderness. There was a DDGS x glycerol interaction (P<0.03) for off-flavor intensity. Pigs fed diets with 20% DDGS had higher WBSF values, lower myofibrillar tenderness, lower overall tenderness scores, lower connective tissue scores, and had more off-flavors (P<0.05). Loin fatty acid analysis revealed an increase in palmitoleic, linoleic, and eicosadienoic acids (P<0.05) and iodine value (P<0.03) for pigs fed 20% DDGS. In the second experiment, there were no differences (P>0.64) in BW or backfat change for sows fed either 0 or 50% DDGS. No differences (P>0.23) in lipid oxidation from lean trimmings as measured by 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay were reported either initially or after 5 d of retail display for sows fed either 0 or 50% DDGS. As expected, lipid oxidation increased (P<0.003) as measured by TBARS assay for both treatments from d 1 to 5. Jowl fatty acid analysis revealed an increase in linoleic acid (P<0.01), total polyunsaturated fatty acids (P<0.01), and the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids (P<0.03) for sows fed 50% DDGS.

<p>Ve&scaron;tačko osemenjavanje (VO) je najznačajnija reproduktivna biotehnologija u<br />intenzivnoj proizvodnji svinja. Efikasan izbor visoko fertilnih genetski superiornih<br />nerastova i visok fertilitet ve&scaron;tački osemenjenih krmača, ima veliki ekonomski uticaj na<br />efikasnost praktične primene ove biotehnologije. Međutim, prethodna istraživanja<br />pokazuju da procena klasičnih parametara fertiliteta ejakulata (koncentracija, ukupan<br />broj, pokretljivost i morfologija spermatozoida) nisu dovoljni pokazatelji fertiliteta i<br />reproduktivne performanse nerastova. Sa druge strane, pokazalo se da je fertilitet<br />ve&scaron;tački osemenjenih krmača, često, niži od onog kod prirodno osemenjenih krmača.<br />Kao osnovni razlog nižeg fertiliteta kod VO krmača, navodi se osemenjavanje sa<br />prekomerno razređenim dozama i/ili dozama dugotrajno čuvanim (3 do 5 dana).<br />Rezultati prethodnih istraživanja ukazuju da komponente semene plazme imaju ključni<br />uticaj na fertilizacioni potencijal spermatozoida in vivo i in vitro, kao i na fiziolo&scaron;ke<br />procese važne za uspe&scaron;nu oplodnju i razvoj embriona u uterusu.<br />Zbog toga je glavni cilj ovog istraživanja bio da se: (a) odredi sadržaj proteina u<br />spermalnoj plazma nerastova koji se koriste za VO na nekoliko komercijalnih farmi<br />svinja u Srbiji, (b) oceni uticaj sadržaja proteina u spermalnoj plazmi na pokretljivost i<br />morfologija spermatozoida u nativnoj i razređenoj spermi, nakon 3 dana čuvanja u<br />razređenom stanju i (c) ispita uticaj intrauterine infuzije spermalne plazme, pre<br />aplikacije klasične VO doze, na fertilitet krmača.<br />Sadržaj proteina u spermalnoj plazmi se kretao između 1% i 6,5%, &scaron;to je<br />ustanovljeno kod 212 uzoraka, dobijenih iz ejakulata 106 nerastova, koji se koriste za<br />VO na 6 farmi u AP Vojvodini. Nizak nivo proteina (1-3.5%, prosečno 2,4%) je<br />ustanovljen kod 69%, a visok nivo proteina (3.6-6.5%, prosečno 4,2%) kod 31%<br />ispitivanih nerastova. Nije ustanovljen značajan (P&gt;0,05) uticaj rase ili starosti nerasta,<br />kao ni godi&scaron;nje sezone, na sadržaj proteina u spermalnoj plazmi. Citomorfolo&scaron;ka<br />svojstva spermatozoida su testirana sistemom CASA i protočnom citometrijom. U<br />nativnoj spermi testiranih nerastova, prosečno je bilo 71% živih, 13% spermatozoida sa<br />o&scaron;tećenim akrozomom i 32% spermatozoida sa morfolo&scaron;kim anomalijama. Volumen<br />ejakulata, koncentracija, ukupan broj i pokretljivost spermatozoida bili su značajno<br />(P&lt;0,01) veći kod nerastova sa visokim, u poređenju sa niskim sadržajem proteina u<br />spermalnoj plazmi. Progresivna pokretljivost - PP (64%) i broj živih spermatozoida - ŽS<br />(66%) bio je značajno veći, dok su broj spermatozoida sa o&scaron;tećenom ćelijskom<br />membranom - OM (19%), akrozomom - OA (29%) i hromozomima - OH (13%) bili<br />značajno (p&lt;0,01) niži u uzorcima sperme sa visokim sadržajem proteina, koji su bili<br />čuvani 72h u razređenju 1:4, od ovih vrednosti kod uzoraka sa niskim sadržajem<br />proteina (PP = 48%, ŽS = 44%, OM = 27% OA = 45% i OH = 22%). Zamena autologne<br />spermalne plazme iz ejakulata sa niskim sadržajem proteina od jednog nerasta, sa<br />homologom spermalnom plazmom iz ejakulata drugog nerasta sa visokim sadržajem<br />proteina, značajno (p&lt;0,01) povećava progresivnu pokretljivost spermatozoida, sa 52%<br />na 65%, kod uzoraka čuvanih 72h u razređenju 1:4. Intrauterina infuzija 30 ml semene<br />plazme, pre aplikacije klasične VO doze, značajno (p&lt;0,05) povećava vrednost<br />pra&scaron;enja (94%) i prosečan broj živo rođene prasadi po leglu (12.3) (p&lt;0,01), u<br />poređenju sa kontrolom grupom krmača (83% i 10.5 prasadi).<br />Na osnovu dobijenih rezultata, može se zaključiti: (1) postoje značajne razlike u<br />sadržaju proteina u spermalnoj plazmi između pojedinih nerastova, (2) uzorci sperme sa<br />visokim sadržajem proteina, imaju veće vrednosti fertilizacionog potencijala<br />spermatozoida, od uzoraka sa niskim sadržajem proteina u spermalnoj plazmi, posle 72h<br />čuvanja u razređenju 1:4 i (3) infuzija spermalne plazme, pre aplikacije klasične VO<br />iv<br />doze, značajno povećava fertilitet tako tretiranih krmača, u poređenju sa kontrolnim<br />krmača. Ovi rezultati pokazuju da određivanje sadržaja proteina u spermalnoj plazmi,<br />može biti korisno sredstvo za predviđanje stepena fertiliteta nerasta, pre njegove<br />upotrebe za VO, kao i da se spermalna plazma može koristi za povećanje fertiliteta<br />ve&scaron;tački osemenjenih krmača. Dobijenim rezultatima su, u potpunosti, potvrđene radne<br />hipoteze i ostvareni postavljeni ciljevi istraživanja.</p>

Assessing Sow Preference for Scratching Enrichment and Effectiveness in Farrowing Crates

<p>Effective enrichments for farm animals are increasingly important to address public concerns about farm animal welfare and improve the welfare of the animals we raise. The public’s concern has increased in recent years as the management and care that farmers give their animals has become more apparent to them. Some of the conditions in which animals are kept are emotionally not appealing to the public. One such condition is farrowing crates for sows and piglets. The sows are confined in a small space with no social contact and cannot perform nesting behaviors. Farrowing crates are widely used though, as they allow farmers to handle piglets without fear of sow aggression, meet individual sow nutritional needs, and personalize care. Piglet mortality due to crushing is also decreased with crate use. Sow welfare in farrowing crates can be improved through environmental enrichments. Enrichments improve welfare by increasing species-specific behaviors, creating a more complex environment, reducing abnormal behaviors, and increasing an animal’s ability to cope with stressful situations. For pigs, different enrichments have been shown to decrease stereotypies, like sham chewing and bar biting, decrease harmful redirected behavior towards pen mates, like tail biting and belly nosing, increased exploratory behavior, and increase positive affect. Straw has been found to be the best enrichment for pigs because it allows them to perform motivational behaviors such as rooting, foraging, and nest building. It is also complex, manipulatable, destructible, and ingestible, which are important attributes of effective enrichments. Unfortunately, straw cannot be used in farms that have slurry systems, as the straw will fall through the slats into the pit below and cause drainage issues. This includes farrowing crates. There have been a few studies on alternative enrichments for sows in crates, like cloth tassels, but they are not as effective as straw and are rarely used on farm.</p> <p> Most enrichments target pigs’ motivations to forage, root, graze, or build nests. Pigs perform other behaviors and may have other motivations that enrichments have not targeted yet. One such behavior is scratching. In a semi-natural environment, pigs will rub against trees and bushes. In confinement, pigs rub on fences, walls, and even allow people to scratch them with their hands. There have been no recorded studies done on scratching enrichment for pigs. Many studies have been done in the dairy industry exploring rotating brushes. These brushes have been implemented successfully on commercial farms and are used by cows to groom and scratch themselves. A similar device may allow pigs to also satisfy their itch. Our aim is to provide scratching enrichment to sows in farrowing crates. Since there have been no studies recorded on scratching enrichment or scratching in pigs in general, several steps had to take place before addressing the topic for sows in crates. The first project’s aim was to see what materials pigs prefer to scratch on and their willingness to use such an enrichment.</p> <p><a> The first project consisted of 2 experiments. Exp. 1 was a pilot study where 5 different materials on scratch posts were presented to a pen of gestating sows. The scratch posts were constructed from polyvinyl chloride (<b>PVC</b>) pipes, boards, and a gate post. Five different materials were attached to the boards: white, soft, long-bristled brushes (<b>White Brush</b>), red, hard, short-bristled brush (<b>Red Brush</b>), black, short-bristled, astro-turf-like mat (<b>Plastic Mat</b>), colorful coir, hard, short-bristled mat (<b>Fiber Mat</b>), and blue, plastic, large-round-bristled combs (<b>Plastic Combs</b>). The 8 sows received all 5 scratch posts in their pen for a habituation day and then 7 d of testing. During testing, video was continuously recorded from which 2 behaviors were collected; scratching and interacting. Sows scratched the most on Plastic Mat followed by Fiber Mat, Plastic Combs, and Red Brush. The White Brush was scratched on the least. The top 3 preferences were chosen to proceed to Exp. 2.</a></p> <p> Experiment 2 for sow preference was performed on several pens (N=14) of sows and gilts with Plastic Mat, Fiber Mat, and Plastic Combs to narrow the preference down to 2 materials to proceed to the farrowing crates. The experiment was carried out in repetitions. Each repetition tested 4 pens at a time. The scratch posts were modified from Exp. 1 and each material was placed in a pen. Due to material destruction only 2 repetitions were carried out, both ending a little early (N=8). During the first repetition (<b>Rep 1</b>), sows ate and destroyed all the Plastic Combs within 2 d. The Plastic Comb scratch posts were pulled from the study and the second repetition (<b>Rep 2</b>) only had the Plastic Mat and Fiber Mat represented. An observation was made that one of the pens in Rep1 had extra feed on their floor and were not destroying their materials as fast as the other pens. So for Rep 2, more modifications to the scratch posts were made and the sows were given a little extra feed. The scratch posts were still destroyed in Rep 2 proving that the sows’ hunger and motivation to perform oral manipulations overwhelmed scratching behaviors. However, from the data that was collected sows spent more time and more frequently interacted with the Fiber Mat compared to the Plastic Mat. They more frequently and spent more time interacting than scratching with the enrichments but scratched on both enrichments the same amount of time and frequency (Durations: F<sub>1,112.6 </sub>= 13.63, <i>P</i> = 0.0003; Frequencies: F<sub>1,111.9 </sub>= 19.72, <i>P</i> < 0.0001).</p> <p> The plastic and fiber mats were presented to sows in farrowing crates for the second project by default. Sows (N=18) of parities 2 (<b>P2</b>) and 3 (<b>P3</b>) were housed for 25 d and assigned no enrichment (<b>Control</b>) or to a scratch pad treatment of plastic mats (<b>Plastic</b>) or fiber mats (<b>Fiber</b>). All were assessed for lesions, abnormal behaviors, eating and scratching behaviors, and time spent in different postures and behaviors. Scratching bouts occurred in short durations and were intermittent throughout the day. Parity 2 Plastic sows scratched for a longer total duration than P2 and P3 Fiber sows, P3 Plastic sows, and P2 Control sows (F<sub>2,11 </sub>= 11.94,<i> P</i> = 0.002). Parity 2 Plastic sows also displayed scratching bouts more frequently than all except P3 Control sows (F<sub>2,11 </sub>= 18.46, <i>P</i> = 0.0003). There were no body lesion differences between treatments (<i>P</i> > 0.05). Abnormal behaviors (<i>P</i> > 0.05) and proportion of time spent in different postures (F<sub>2,94 </sub>= 0.0003, <i>P</i> = 0.999) did not differ among treatments. </p> In conclusion, if a sow is experiencing hunger while in gestation pens this motivation may be overwhelming any other behavior needs. Scratch posts were destroyed and eaten. In this sort of environment, focusing on an enrichment that meets the need to forage and root would be more successful. Sows still scratched on the posts, so their preference and scratching use was still recorded to an extent to proceed to the experiment in farrowing crates. In farrowing crates, plastic scratch pads may be a suitable enrichment as they increased the natural behavior of scratching and did not increase abnormal behaviors. More research is needed to refine the scratch pad design and identify additional measures needed to examine the suitability of scratch pads as a form of environmental enrichment for sows in farrowing crates. In addition, the behavioral characteristics and sows’ underlying motivation for scratching need to be studied because very little is known about scratching behavior of sows. If sows are motivated to scratch, and scratching helps improve their welfare, then scratching enrichment may be beneficial to sows and farmers.

Breeding for a larger litter size has affected the vitality of piglets negatively. The larger litter sizes lead to lower individual birthweight. Smaller pigs have bigger difficulties to keep up their body temperature right after birth because of their lower muscle mass. Other factors that affect the vitality of the piglets are season, how the pigs are cared for and how they are housed. The purpose of the study is to analyze changes in litter size and birthweight over the time period 2013 to 2017. The study also analyses how litter size and birthweight is affected by season. The study performs statistical analyses on data recorded at the pig facilities at Lövsta agriculture research facility, SLU in Uppsala, Sweden, between the years 2013 to 2017. This study includes piglets of the crossbreed Yorkshire x Hampshire. The questions of issue in this study concerns the change in litter size and birthweight over time years 2013 to 2017, the regression between litter size and birthweight and the effect of season on birthweight and litter size. The study showed that the birthweight decreased over the years. Regression showed that the increase of litter size lowers the birthweight. The effect of season was significant indicating lower birthweights in the second compared to the fourth quarter of the year. The effect of season can potentially be explained by weather conditions. Relação entre condição corporal de fêmeas suínas ao primeiro parto e ao desmame e a produção de leitões no segundo parto. / Relation between corporal condition of swine females at the first farrowing and weaning and the piglests productionin the second farrowing

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência do número de leitões paridos e desmamados no primeiro parto, das reservas corporais ao parto e a perda das reservas corporais durante a lactação sobre a produção de leitões no segundo parto. Foram analisadas 1222 fêmeas que chegaram ao segundo parto sem interrupções como retorno ao estro, abortamento ou vazias ao parto. Foram medidos o peso corporal, espessura de toucinho (ET) e escore corporal visual (ECV), no máximo 24 horas pós-parto e no dia do desmame. Foram calculados a gordura e a proteína corporal ao parto e ao desmame para posteriormente serem obtidos os valores com relação às perdas destas reservas. O total de leitões nascidos no primeiro e no segundo partos e o número de leitões desmamados foram analisados de acordo com as características corporais e produtivas das fêmeas no primeiro parto e primeiro desmame. O tamanho de leitegada no primeiro e no segundo partos foram, respectivamente 12,4 leitões e o de 9,7 leitões nascidos totais. Na média as fêmeas apresentaram redução de 18,6 kg (9%) de peso corporal, 3,1mm de ET e 0,8 de ECV durante a lactação. O tamanho da leitegada no segundo parto não diferiu entre as classes das variáveis, peso, ET, ECV, gordura e proteína corporal no primeiro parto (P>0,05). As fêmeas com peso acima de 178kg, ET (≥16), ECV (≥3,0) e gordura corporal (≥21%) ao desmame tiveram maior leitegada no segundo parto e menor diferença no número de nascidos entre o primeiro e segundo parto (P<0,05). Fêmeas com maior percentual de proteína corporal ao desmame (≥15%) tiveram maior número de leitões nascidos na segunda leitegada. Houve maior diminuição no tamanho da segunda leitegada nas fêmeas com perdas de peso corporal acima de 10% (P<0,05). Perdas de proteína ou de gordura corporal acima de 10% e de 23%, respectivamente implicaram na maior diminuição no número de leitões nascidos no segundo parto (P<0,05). A perda de reservas corporais durante a lactação de primíparas influencia a redução do tamanho da leitegada no segundo parto. / The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of body reserves at farrowing and the corporal reserves losses during the first lactation on the second litter size. A number of 1222 females that reached the second parity without interruptions as return to estrus, abortion or failing to farrow were analyzed. Measurements of body weight, backfat thickness (BT) and corporal condition (CC) were taken within 24-hours after farrowing and on the weaning day. Sow body fat and protein mass, at first farrowing and first weaning, were calculated and the values of these reserves losses were estimated. The total piglets at first and second farrowing and the number of weaned piglets were analyzed according to the females corporal and productive characteristics at first farrowing and first weaning.Litter size at first and second farrowing were respectively 12.4 and 9.7 total born piglets. In the average, the females demonstrated a reduction of 18.6 kg (9%) in body weight, 3.1mm BT and 0.8 CC during lactation. Second litter size did not differ between the categories body weight, BT, CC, body fat and body protein at first farrowing (P>0.05). Females with more than 178kg, BT (≥16), ECV (≥3.0) and body fat (≥21%) at weaning had largest second litters and less differences in the number of piglets born between first and second farrowing (P<0.05). Sow body protein mass at weaning (≥15%) had a higher effect on the number of piglets produced in the second litter. Females with weight losses during lactation above 10% showed the greatest reduction in second litter size (P<0.05). Protein or fat mass losses above 10% and 23%, respectively resulted in a high reduction in the number of total born piglets in second litter (P<0.05).Looses of corporal reserves during the first lactation influences the reduction in the second litter size.

Effects of vitamin D supplementation and floor space on pig performance

Tokach / Three experiments using 2,385 pre-weaned pigs, growing pigs, and sows were performed in addition to a meta-analysis and industry survey. Experiment 1 tested the effects of sow vitamin D supplementation from vitamin D₃ (low, medium, or high) or 25OHD₃ (same IU equivalency as the medium level of vitamin D₃) on maternal performance, neonatal pig bone and muscle characteristics, subsequent pre-weaned pig performance and serum 25OHD₃ with only differences in serum 25OHD₃ being impacted. In the second experiment a subsample of pigs weaned from the maternal portion of the study were used in a split-plot design and fed 2 different forms of vitamin D in the nursery and growth performance was evaluated until the pigs reached market weight. Overall, the nursery vitamin D treatments did not impact growth; however, pigs from sows fed the medium level of vitamin D₃ performed better after weaning compared to pigs from sows fed the low or the high level of vitamin D₃, and serum 25OHD₃ was altered based on maternal and nursery vitamin D supplementation. In the third experiment, finishing pigs were initially provided 2 different floor space allowances (0.64 or 0.91 m²) and pigs initially provided 0.64 m² were subject to 1 of 3 marketing strategies which removed the heaviest pigs from the pen in order to provide additional floor space to the pigs remaining in the pen. Overall, pigs initially provided more floor space had improved ADG and ADFI, but increasing the number of marketing events increased ADG of the pigs remaining in the pen following market events. The meta-analysis suggested that a multi-term empirical model using random effects to account for known error and weighted observations to account for heterogeneous experimental designs and replication provided models that best fit the database. Also, the meta-analysis concluded that floor space allowance does influence ADG, ADFI, and G:F and BW of the pig can alter the floor space response. Finally, the vitamin and trace mineral survey suggested that a wide range of supplementation practices are used in the swine industry but most production systems supplement micronutrients above the basal requirement estimates of the animals.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência do número de leitões paridos e desmamados no primeiro parto, das reservas corporais ao parto e a perda das reservas corporais durante a lactação sobre a produção de leitões no segundo parto. Foram analisadas 1222 fêmeas que chegaram ao segundo parto sem interrupções como retorno ao estro, abortamento ou vazias ao parto. Foram medidos o peso corporal, espessura de toucinho (ET) e escore corporal visual (ECV), no máximo 24 horas pós-parto e no dia do desmame. Foram calculados a gordura e a proteína corporal ao parto e ao desmame para posteriormente serem obtidos os valores com relação às perdas destas reservas. O total de leitões nascidos no primeiro e no segundo partos e o número de leitões desmamados foram analisados de acordo com as características corporais e produtivas das fêmeas no primeiro parto e primeiro desmame. O tamanho de leitegada no primeiro e no segundo partos foram, respectivamente 12,4 leitões e o de 9,7 leitões nascidos totais. Na média as fêmeas apresentaram redução de 18,6 kg (9%) de peso corporal, 3,1mm de ET e 0,8 de ECV durante a lactação. O tamanho da leitegada no segundo parto não diferiu entre as classes das variáveis, peso, ET, ECV, gordura e proteína corporal no primeiro parto (P>0,05). As fêmeas com peso acima de 178kg, ET (≥16), ECV (≥3,0) e gordura corporal (≥21%) ao desmame tiveram maior leitegada no segundo parto e menor diferença no número de nascidos entre o primeiro e segundo parto (P<0,05). Fêmeas com maior percentual de proteína corporal ao desmame (≥15%) tiveram maior número de leitões nascidos na segunda leitegada. Houve maior diminuição no tamanho da segunda leitegada nas fêmeas com perdas de peso corporal acima de 10% (P<0,05). Perdas de proteína ou de gordura corporal acima de 10% e de 23%, respectivamente implicaram na maior diminuição no número de leitões nascidos no segundo parto (P<0,05). A perda de reservas corporais durante a lactação de primíparas influencia a redução do tamanho da leitegada no segundo parto. / The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of body reserves at farrowing and the corporal reserves losses during the first lactation on the second litter size. A number of 1222 females that reached the second parity without interruptions as return to estrus, abortion or failing to farrow were analyzed. Measurements of body weight, backfat thickness (BT) and corporal condition (CC) were taken within 24-hours after farrowing and on the weaning day. Sow body fat and protein mass, at first farrowing and first weaning, were calculated and the values of these reserves losses were estimated. The total piglets at first and second farrowing and the number of weaned piglets were analyzed according to the females corporal and productive characteristics at first farrowing and first weaning.Litter size at first and second farrowing were respectively 12.4 and 9.7 total born piglets. In the average, the females demonstrated a reduction of 18.6 kg (9%) in body weight, 3.1mm BT and 0.8 CC during lactation. Second litter size did not differ between the categories body weight, BT, CC, body fat and body protein at first farrowing (P>0.05). Females with more than 178kg, BT (≥16), ECV (≥3.0) and body fat (≥21%) at weaning had largest second litters and less differences in the number of piglets born between first and second farrowing (P<0.05). Sow body protein mass at weaning (≥15%) had a higher effect on the number of piglets produced in the second litter. Females with weight losses during lactation above 10% showed the greatest reduction in second litter size (P<0.05). Protein or fat mass losses above 10% and 23%, respectively resulted in a high reduction in the number of total born piglets in second litter (P<0.05).Looses of corporal reserves during the first lactation influences the reduction in the second litter size.
