A Historical And Social Analysis Of An Urban Transformation: Akay Junction In Ankara

Sonmez, Caglayan 01 January 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis explores the ways in which the concept of &ldquo / city junction&rdquo / has been considered as an element of the urban image within the network of circulation. The aim of this study is to make an historical analysis of urban transformation in In&ouml / n&uuml / Square at Ankara, instigated by the respect to recent traffic problem-centered nodal interventions in the area. Akay Junction, which is thought as 1930&rsquo / s representative space also having historical power as well as being a node where two significant axis intersect, is studied in its social, cultural and political context, through written and visual historical sources, with its relevant physical spatial components and relations to space and its nearby environment. Presenting the interactions within the historical process and considering the traffic based physical transformation, the role of the concept of city junction in the formation of urban public space in terms of architecture is questioned. Based on the material research the thesis presents the existing and the possible alternative models together with a proposal, regarding the further possible transformations especially with the extension planned for the underground rail transport to the area. The alternatives indicate the qualitatively different results that will be got with respect to providing a viable urban public space as such a node.

The lifestyles of the addicted rondonenses end for presenting the face of another city, different from that city organized around the construction of a Germanic, much more several, heterogeneous and ambiguous identity. The challenge went build an analysis, in that, the meaning of the experience lived by the subjects and the elaborated values or reelaborados of her came to constitute in the central axis of the investigation. This way, the city stops being purely a space geographical, plan and homogeneous, to constitute in a heterogeneous and three-dimensional social space, where the several places that constitute the city, are, actually, territories endowed with an own rationality. Certainly, it was not enough to identify the pertinent heterogenidade the city. It was precise, for beyond, to verify the problems that elapse of the act of imposing the cultural hegemony, due to the impossibility of homogenizing what by definition is multiple, flowed, several. It was with this motivation that I tried to investigate, by means of the methodology sustained by the Oral History and inspired by the to do etnographical , the addicted of Rondon, in what concern to its life manners, its daily practices, its world visions and, in a more punctual way, the conflict relationship, derived of the existent contradictionbetween its lifestyles and the current values of the imposition of the local Germanic culture / Esta pesquisa se propõe a analisar as relações e práticas pelas quais os adictos de Marechal Cândido Rondon Paraná, reinventam o espaço da cidade, em muitos momentos, estabelecendo uma relação de estranhamento com a cultura hegemônica local.

Urban Gardening: motivy a možnosti přetváření veřejného prostoru ve městě / Urban Gardening: Motives and the Possibility of Transformation of the Public Space in the City

Papoušková, Kristina January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis pursues the phenomenon of urban gardening. It especially focuses on urban gardening in the form of community gardens, whose number has multiplied in Prague in the recent years. This trend has also caused an interest of the media and thus its is natural to research the motivation of the people, who participate in this activity, whether it is deeper or if it is just a fad. As a theroretical footing the ideas of Manuel Castells about urban social movements as well as the ideas of Henri Lefebvre about the right to the city were used. These authors believed that in the city the human scale is the most important and not financial value of the urban space. In the next part of the theoretical work the problem of public space and its interpretation in social sciences is presented. The analysis is dedicated to urban gardening in Prague. It aims to find whether it is just a temporary fashion or if the gardens could become permanent part of the public space in Prague. The function of community gardens is analysed with the use of a case study of one such garden. The work also tries to find out if the gardens in public space only bring positives or if they can also cause conficts.

Kompaktní město - aneb co nového se může ještě dít v Brně mezi nádražími / Compact City - or what new is able to yet be done in Brno among railway stations

Šuška, Milan January 2010 (has links)
The diploma thesis reacts on the upcoming urban plan for Brno-Jižní centrum. It creates a piece of a real city with some traditional urban spaces and vertically mixed functions. The theory of the creation of the new town quarter is strongly influenced by the reconstruction of Brno railway junction and by the requirement of the incorporation of the city high speed rail connected with Brno region. In the transport concept a new railway tracing is designed enabling to bring all regional trains to the present junction point – Brno main station. This solution will improve a public transport in the city. Moving the route from the Boulevard will make possible an unlimited connection between historical centre and new Jižní centrum. In the design the emphasis is put on a maximal habitability of the area together with application of semi-public residential courts known as “hofjes.” The new public spaces are based on composition principles, optical connection to the historical heart of the city and on linking of urban structures that provide a smart pedestrian connection between the future main railway station and the historical city centre.

Production Of Urban Space In The Southwestern Periphery Of Ankara

Acar Ozler, Ozgul 01 October 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to explain the production of urban space at the southwestern periphery of Ankara between 1985 and 2007. It has been argued that urban development is not a self-regulatory process / on contrary it is a process produced by urban planning practice. In this respect this thesis asks how and what extent urban planning produces particular urban pattern at the peripheral areas. The southwestern periphery is taken into account as a field of case study due to the peculiar development dynamics. Historical development in this area reveals a contrast between planned development directed by master plans and problematic development that has been produced by fragmented and incoherent planning processes. The difficulties of urban plans and urban planning are intimately related with the legal and administrative structures of the planning system. A methodology offered in this thesis is devised to analyze the incremental and piecemeal nature of planning process with reference to these structures. The results of the research has shown that when confronted with legal and administrative conflicts and struggles, fragmented planning decisions manipulating the existing master plan intensify and become the root cause of dispersed, awkward and haphazard spatial patterns of urban expansion.

Spatial Requirements Of Fire Stations In Urban Areas: A Case Study Of Ankara

Hacioglu, Cigdem 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Fires, with their sudden appearance and destructive character, cause property losses beside much more death and injury especially in cities. Providing fire safety is a multi-faceted context that is related with staff, vehicle, equipment, function, organization, technology, education and consciousness. These are related, indirectly, with spatial organization that is the other side of the issue: they affect space or they are affected from space. In research context, the fire stations are evaluated as a unit of emergency and land use element of urban space. By associating the concepts related to emergency management and to urban scale, the space-time relation is examined in urban areas. This research bases on the spatial deficiencies of fire stations in urban areas which are reasons of the fire losses. Level of laws and regulations in Turkey for spatial requirements are examined. Site selection and design criteria of fire stations are evaluated with available information about implications in Ankara case study. As a result of the interviews that have been made to top executive of fire station, it is found that process of site selection and design of fire stations is going on with subjective experiences in urban space. In conclusion of the research, it is displayed that the decisions about the site selection and design of the fire stations are related to not only population criterion, but also many issues in macro-meso-micro scales. It is considered that the set of multi-criteria that are reached in this regard will provide contribution in legal organization and developing the standards.

The Humanistic Meaning Of Urban Squares:the Case Of Cayyolu Urban Square Project

Zeka, Basak 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Urban public squares, within the context of public spaces, are essential components of cities because they provide spaces for social interaction. This helps sustain the humanization of the society through gathering, lingering and wandering through, and engaging together into various human activities and can make significant contributions to the cultural development of communities. In the last three decades, the concept of public space has been redefined within the context of urban space development leading to socio-spatial developments like social polarization and spatial fragmentation. Accordingly, new places like shopping malls, parking lots, heavy traffic roads have replaced traditional public spaces such as squares, plazas and neighborhood streets. These alternative public spaces, in many instances, are provided without taking into consideration the human aspects. The aim of this study is to extract humanistic design attributes that can be used in the production of a public square in the &Ccedil / ayyolu District in Ankara. To do that, the study explores the meaning of urban square as a public space through inhabitants&rsquo / eyes. Furthermore, it examines the socio-spatial components (regarding the behavioral, psychological, physical, visual-aesthetic, geographical and managerial aspects) of urban square and critically reflects on the design of the &Ccedil / ayyolu Urban Square Project (&Ccedil / USP), with respect to human design principles through a comparative analysis of users&rsquo / and decision makers&rsquo / perceptions.
