Gastown eco-studio: manifestations of body in interior design and eco-fashion

Broojerdiazar, Valeh 12 September 2015 (has links)
The fashion industry has a complex and often ambiguous relationship with the environment. Fast fashion has led to increased waste and harmful production methods, but innovative textile developments have led to more environmentally-friendly clothing production. In the recent decades, eco-fashion has become an evolutionary model that focuses on environmental concerns and an eco-driven consciousness. This Master of Interior Design practicum project proposes a hypothetical eco-fashion design studio in Gastown, Vancouver in order to showcase the conclusive relationship between interior design and eco-fashion. This project employs important conceptions like the body and identity in the design of Gastown Eco-Studio. These themes inform the design process, and the theoretical and methodological considerations demonstrate that the body, as an inhabitant of the built environment can provide a conceptual model for interior design and the related concept of identity can be illustrated through the process of eco-consciousness. / October 2015

Space identity

Liu, Min 18 June 2007 (has links)
As an architectural language, what elements and systems constitute a work of architecture? They are the structural system, enclosure system, circulation system, functional requirements, context, light, views, proportion, scale, forms, cultural characteristics, color and many others. In this thesis, I focus on the structural system, the spatial organization and quality of light with a view to how they contribute to the identity of spaces. the vehicle of my study is an Environmental Learning Center, for Franklin County, Virginia. The building design enploys two different structural systems in two parts of the building, arranging dissimilar spatial organizations in building sections. Various enclosure materials are used to exhibit distinct light qualities. Design is not only to satisfy functional needs, but to architecturally determine spatial differentiation, which accordingly generates the identity of spaces. / Master of Architecture

Mapping New Jerusalem : space, national identity and power in British espionage fiction 1945-79

Goodman, Samuel Geoffrey January 2012 (has links)
This thesis argues that the espionage fiction of Graham Greene, Ian Fleming and John le Carré published between 1945 and 1979 illustrates a number of discontinuities, disjunctions and paradoxes related to space, sovereignty and national identity in post-war Britain. To this effect, the thesis has three broad aims. Firstly, to approach the representations of space and sovereign power in the work of these authors published during the period 1945-1979, examining the way in which sovereign power produces space, and then how that power is distributed and maintained. Secondly, to analyse the effect that sovereign power has on a variety of social and cultural environments represented within spy fiction and how the exercise of power affects the response of individuals within them. Thirdly, to establish how the intervention of sovereign power within environments relates to the creation, propagation and exclusion of national identities within each author’s work. By mapping the application of sovereign power throughout various environments, the thesis demonstrates that the control of environment is inextricably linked to the sovereign control of British subjects in espionage fiction. Moreover, the role of the spy in the application of sovereign power reveals a paradox integral to the espionage genre, namely that the maintenance of sovereign power exists only through the undermining of its core principles. Sovereignty, in these texts, is maintained only by weakening the sovereign control of other nations.

O patrimônio ambiental urbano de Corumbá-MS: identidade e planejamento / The urban and environmental heritage of Corumbá-MS: identity and planning

Pereira, Joelson Gonçalves 16 August 2007 (has links)
This present research is an approach about Corumbá, a city built over a limestone Plateau, on the right bank of Paraguay River, in the northwest region of Mato Grosso do Sul. The place is marked by its intense spacious personality, which is respected by its natural physiography and its permanence as a representative material culture while a patrimonial asset, recognized as a National and Historical Heritage. These space characteristics of Corumbá were the subjects of this academic inquiry carried out under the assessed perspective of urban and environmental heritage, favoring a reflection about two important and current subjects: the planning and the space identity of the places. As a result, in the face of its material representation, the city showed favorable to portray the problem which involves the patrimonial preservation question in Brazil, as well as its results related to the factors of environmental quality, urban civilization and identity. At last, it is emphasized that the reading presented in this work results from a systematic construction concerned to the purposes established by the research proposition started in 2003. The achieved reflections related to the theme resulted from two main worries concerning the reality of the studied field and which constituted the efforts to this investigation: the characterization of the material culture elements and the representative physiography of its urban heritage in Corumbá and the problem which involves its preservation while an expressive materiality defines the space identity.
