On the spectrum of positive operators

Unknown Date (has links)
Spectral theory, mathematical system theory, evolution equations, differential and difference equations [electronic resource] : 21st International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications, Berlin, July 2010.It is known that lattice homomorphisms and G-solvable positive operators on Banach lattices have cyclic peripheral spectrum (See [17]). In my thesis I prove that positive contractions whose spectral radius is 1 on Banach lattices with increasing norm have cyclic peripheral point spectrum. I also prove that if the Banach lattice is a K B space satisfying the growth conditon and º is an eigenvalue of a positive contraction T such that [º] = 1, then 1 is also an eigenvalue of T as well as an eigenvalue of T¨, the dual of T. I also investigate the conditions on contraction operators on Hilbert lattices and AL-spaces which guanantee that 1 is an eigenvalue. As we know from [17], if T : E-E is a positive ideal irreducible operator on E such the r (T) = 1 is a pole of the resolvent R(º, T), then r (T) is simple pole with dimN (T -r(T)I) and ºper(T) is cyclic. Also all points of ºper(T) are simple poles of the resolvent R(º,T). SInce band irreducibility and º-order continuity do not imply ideal irreducibility [2], we prove the analogous results for band irreducible, º-order continuous operators. / by Cheban P. Forever Young : Convolution Inequalities in Weighted Lorentz-type Spaces

Křepela, Martin January 2014 (has links)
This thesis is devoted to an investigation of boundedness of a general convolution operator between certain weighted Lorentz-type spaces with the aim of proving analogues of the Young convolution inequality for these spaces. Necessary and sufficient conditions on the kernel function are given, for which the convolution operator with the fixed kernel is bounded between a certain domain space and the weighted Lorentz space of type Gamma. The considered domain spaces are the weighted Lorentz-type spaces defined in terms of the nondecreasing rearrangement of a function, the maximal function or the difference of these two quantities. In each case of the domain space, the corresponding Young-type convolution inequality is proved and the optimality of involved rearrangement-invariant spaces in shown. Furthermore, covering of the previously existing results is also discussed and some properties of the new rearrangement-invariant function spaces obtained during the process are studied. / <p>Paper II was a manuscript at the time of the defense.</p>

Espaços de funções e a propriedade de Lindelöf no produto / Function spaces and the Lindelöf propertie on the product

Renan Maneli Mezabarba 12 August 2014 (has links)
In this work, some function spaces that naturally arise in the general topology context are studied. By the notion of bornologies, Cp-theory and Ck-theory problems are simultaneously analysed, as the characterization of some cardinal functions in the space of continuous real functions and properties related to selective games. The Stone-Cech compactification is also studied, and the existence of P-points in the remainder of the set of the natural numbers is considered under the Continuum Hypothesis. With the addition of some hypotheses about small cardinals, some results obtained through the text are used in problems related to Michael spaces and Alster spaces

T-Sets of Normed Linear Spaces

McCormick, Robert E. 12 1900 (has links)
This paper is a study of T-sets of normed linear spaces. Geometrical properties of normed linear spaces are developed in terms of intersection properties shared by a subcollection of T-sets of the space and in terms of special spanning properties shared by each T-set of a subcollection of T-sets of the space. A characterization of the extreme points of the unit ball of the dual of a normed linear space is given in terms of the T-sets of the space. Conditions on the collection of T-sets of a normed linear space are determined so that the normed linear space has the property that extreme points of the unit ball of the dual space map canonically to extreme points of the unit ball of the third dual space.

Edgeways : the design of mediating zones along public paths

Zimmerman, Lee Zaurie January 1980 (has links)
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1980. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 92-97). / Our society places greater value on individualism and privacy than on sharing and public use of space. This attitude is apparent in the form of our physical environment. Given the need for spontaneous, informal bonds of community and the increasingly privatized environment in which we live, architects must strive to provide opportunities for social interaction in the public realm. For this to occur, the public structure must be legible, accessible and foster a sense of place. Of the many ways to encourage such interaction, this thesis chooses to demonstrate, through design studies, one attitude calling for a spatially-defined edge-zone between buildings and public paths. This means imbuing a path with qualities of place and providing transactional zones rather than abrupt boundaries along enclosure walls. Operating at both large and small scales, architectural design studies and accompanying text describe possible ways of applying this attitude. At the urban scale, the thesis project addresses the extension of the Charles River basin water-edge pedestrian use zone, structuring the margin between the busy roads surrounding the basin and the water itself. Within the Charles basin context, I have proposed a scheme for a new museum of science and housing complex on the site of the Charles River dam. A major portion of the thesis focuses on the design of two very different edge-zones mediating between the architecture and the public paths that move along it; the sky lit Passage between parts of the museum and housing descending from an elevated transit stop to the water's edge and the Promenade a long a south-facing expanse of river next to an auditorium, cafe and sluice. "Biographies" of the elements forming the edgeways explain the design process at each stage. / by Lee Zaurie Zimmerman. / M.Arch.

"For The Enjoyment of All:" Cosmopolitan Aspirations, Urban Encounters and Class Boundaries in Mexico City

Leal Martínez, Alejandra M. January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines the production and experience of class and racial distinctions in contemporary Mexico City by focusing on encounter and proximity between different social groups in the country's most emblematic urban center. It draws on eighteenth months of ethnographic fieldwork with artists and young professionals living in the city's historic center as part of a public-private redevelopment plan locally known as the "rescue." Led by multimillionaire Carlos Slim, this endeavor has been framed as an initiative of civil society to recover the symbolic heart of the nation from crime and illegality while transforming it into a secure and livable space for all Mexicans. The rescue mobilizes a neoliberal idiom of the modern (associated in Mexico and across the world with democracy and responsible citizenship, a retreating state and a free market economy) and epitomizes the illegibility of public and private distinctions. I focus on moments of encounter between the historic center's new affluent residents, on the one hand, and the inhabitants of its dilapidated tenements and the vendors of its informal street markets, on the other. Such encounters slide into suspicion, uncertainty, instability and misrecognition. In focusing on encounter I trace new residents' desire for commonality, for an "all of us" in the historic center (a recognition as urban dwellers or as fellow citizens), and their anxieties about the very possibility of this commonality. Such situated fears, I argue, articulate with longstanding elite apprehensions in Mexico about the popular masses, historically construed as the embodiment of the national subject and at the same time as the manifestation of atavistic residues. In the discourses and practices of different agents of rescue (new residents, the police, private investors and state officials) these masses figure at once as subjects to be redeemed and as plainly irredeemable others, unfit for the requirements of modern democratic citizenship. The dissertation thus traces relations between new residents' quotidian fears of crime and violence in the socially mixed spaces of the historic center on the one hand, and contemporary debates and anxieties over liberal democracy, citizenship and social belonging, on the other.

Montadesmontaremonta: significação dos sistemas de montagem / Disassembleness: the significance of assembling systems

Martins Junior, Albano Soares 02 June 2008 (has links)
In the iconic domain, this thesis focuses in analyzing the order that emerges in the erection systems of fairs and exhibits, their syntagmas and corresponding paradigms, under the perspective of perception, information and production, which generates experimentations, models and prototypes. Because the assemblies of several fairs and exhibits are inherently short-term and transitional spaces, they tend to constitute renewed environments. In short, these spaces cause less environmental impact because of their short existence. Once removed, the place they were set returns to its former condition. As demanded by increasingly industrialized societies, this leads to juxtaposed and complex uses, a more diversified occupation of spaces that permit various functions, with eventual and/or regular activities. In this sense, more and more computerized spaces emerge, different from the essentially mechanic ones, and able to carry short-term transitional activities; spaces as complex carriers of information and intentionally transformed into informational vehicles.
