The last serious thing : modernist responses to the bullfight

Foley, Lawrence January 2014 (has links)
This thesis investigates the ways in which literary and artistic modernism interpreted the Spanish institution of the corrida, or the bullfight. The sheer volume of modernist intellectuals who engaged with the corrida is startling. From Joyce to Picasso, Stein to Hemingway, Leiris to Lawrence, the bullfight provided inspiration to so many of the writers and artists of canonical modernism. Indeed, the relevance of the corrida to modernist intellectuals is perhaps captured best by Michel Leiris’s lucid metaphor of the bullfight as a mirror revealing ‘certain dark parts of ourselves’. In other words, in addition to providing the content of literature of the early twentieth century, many of the writers we identify as modernist used the corrida in a metaphorical capacity too. In light of this, it seems significant that the peak of modern interest in the corrida occurred in the context of a cultural crisis in western civilization in the first half of the twentieth century. Thus the key questions that this thesis seeks to address are as follows: why did the modernist gaze rest so intently upon the corrida? Why did so many European intellectuals cling to bullfighting and insist upon its enduring relevance given the apparent paradox between its own lack of adaptation to modern conditions and the very ‘newness’ that modernism championed? To what extent did the corrida act as a mirror to many of the cultural tensions problems addressed by modernism? How did modernism’s engagement with bullfighting, and the easy manner in which Hemingway’s body of work came to stand alone for that rich engagement, affect subsequent works that focussed on the bullring? These phenomena are examined in the context of the anomic cultural landscape of the era, taking into consideration the artistic, sexual and archaeological revolutions that informed and affected writers of the time.

Woman in Spanish Culture as Reflected in the Drama of Jacinto Benavente

Cowen, Cheryl Lee Price 08 1900 (has links)
This is a study of the feminist content of the dramas of Jacinto Benavente (1866-1954) whose dramatic career spanned the same sixty years during which the most spectacular feminist advances took place in Spain. To this end twenty-nine plays are considered to illustrate topically Benavente's conception of the nature of Spanish women and his attitudes with regard to their position in society. It is concluded that Benavente in his first period of dramatic output drew into focus the problems confronting Spanish women in their culture, but in his second period (after 1920), however, he failed to portray adequately the modern female and her approach to the changing environment. Nevertheless, at its best, Benavente's drama constitutes a great contribution to feminist literature.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Silvia Cristina Aguetoni Marques.pdf: 2436050 bytes, checksum: 979721afa7ddcb9aa5f4d6d53a4c9224 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-03-23 / The current research has as main objective to uncover combinations between religious / Christian European elements and eroticized / flamenco Arabian elements that started to take shape in Spain from the 8th century on and keep being reelaborated nowadays in a constant process of tense coexistence. In order to achieve this objective, some movies by relevant film directors for the subject matter (such as Luis Buñuel, Pedro Almodóvar, Carlos Saura, and Bigas Luna) will be used, establishing the hybrid and baroque Spanish culture through the movies. Despite the fact that these moviemakers belong to different provinces and times and that they have distinctive styles, the four of them exhaustively work or have worked with great icons from Spanish culture: bullfights, typical dishes, such as paella and tortilla, flamenco dance and music, terrorist attacks after Franco s era. The thesis was developed based on examples from movie scenes.

Cobos Gil, Miguel January 2020 (has links)
The following research is intended to ascertain and furthermore describe in depththe way in which David Trueba’s fictional novel Tierra de campos reflects thecontemporary Spanish society. And by so doing, an analysis of whether Spanishsociety can genuinely be considered postmodern, will be presented. The analysis will be supported by a focus on the space-temporal scope asit is asserted in Fredrik Jameson’s theory on post-modernism. Taking the novel byTrueba as a main source, reference characters, places, setting as well as context, willplay an important role in the mapping out of all shared features of the society thatthe novel describes in order to approach the purpose of the study. As a result of this research, we have been able to properly define the societydepicted in the novel as one clearly pertaining to the post-modern timeline, nonetheless bearing some of the inherent traces derived from the rusty structurescharacteristic of the last period of Franco’s dictatorship.
