Symmetries of Venn diagrams on the sphere

A diagram on a surface is a collection of coloured simple closed curves which generally intersect only at points, and a Venn diagram of n curves has the additional property that there are exactly 2^n faces in the diagram, each corresponding to a unique intersection of the interiors of a subset of the curves. A diagram has rotational symmetry if it can be constructed by rotating a single closed curve in the plane n times, each time by 2 \pi /n, and changing the colour of the curve for each rotation; equivalently, the diagram can be constructed from a region forming a "pie-slice" of the diagram and containing a section of each curve, and then copying and rotating this region n times, recolouring the sections of curves in the region appropriately. This and reflective symmetries are the only non-trivial ways a finite plane diagram can have some kind of symmetry. In this thesis, we extend the notion of planar symmetries for diagrams onto the sphere by constructing and projecting diagrams onto the sphere and examining the much richer symmetry groups that result. Restricting our attention to Venn diagrams gives a rich combinatorial structure to the diagrams that we examine and exploit. We derive several constructions of Venn diagrams with interesting symmetries on the sphere by modifying the landmark work of Griggs, Killian and Savage from 2004 which provided some important answers to questions about planar symmetric diagrams. We examine a class of diagrams that exhibit a rotary reflection symmetry (a rotation of the sphere followed by a reflection), in which we make some initial steps towards a general construction for n-Venn diagrams realizing a very rich symmetry group of order 2n, for n prime or a power of two. We also provide a many-dimensional construction of very simple Venn diagrams which realize any subgroup of an important type of symmetry group that use only reflection symmetries. In summary, we exhibit and examine at least one Venn diagram realizing each of the 14 possible different classes of finite symmetry groups on the sphere, many of these diagrams with different types of colour symmetry. All of these investigations are coupled with a theoretical and practical framework for further investigation of symmetries of diagrams and discrete combinatorial objects on spheres and higher-dimensional surfaces.

Kultur och utbildning : – en tolkning av två grundskolors mångkulturella kontexter

This dissertation deals with the sort of culture that forms the organization of education and its contents of two multicultural nine-year compulsory schools. The analysis is based on ethnographic work on the municipal school Tallskolan and the free independent Muslim school Jibrilskolan. To illustrate the sorts of social integration offered by Tallskolan and Jibrilskolan and explain whence they came, I have used Alexander’s (2006) conception of incorporation and civilsphere. In relation to the concepts, landscapes of meaning and systems of meaning (Reed, 2011) I ask what they can tell us about the expectations which members of society direct towards themselves, and in particular pupils with an immigrant background and the multicultural schools which they expect to help them into society.The result shows that the prioritizing of Tallskolan's school heads and the municipality changes at the same rate as that of the social geography of the residential district. School politics have tried in different ways to desegregatethe pupils through closing down the intermediate school stage and offeringschool attendance at other schools, but have failed due to parental protest.Overall changes that have been realised during the latter period is a drive to give further educational training to teachers of Swedish as a second language. When looked at through the theoretic concepts of the dissertation these priorities mirror an adaptation to society's main cultural practice. The result for Jibrilskolan shows that the school prioritizes the development of the pupils' Muslim identity and their self-confidence. The school consists of teachers with both Swedish and Muslim backgrounds. The actual teaching activates different opinions as to the degree that religion influences the teaching. Divergent opinions are overruled, however, as teachers with a Swedish background see that Islam can also be used as a resource. The Muslim teachers help the teachers with a Swedish background to explain and convince the Muslim parents to let their children participate in activities which they otherwise would probably not have done. Based on the theoretic concepts of the dissertation the prioritizing mirrors a great variety of different perspectives on knowledge, values and norms.

Laminar Filmwise Condensation Of Flowing Vapor On A Sphere

The objective of this study is to analyze theoretically the laminar film condensation of water vapor flowing on a sphere. For this purpose, the problem was handled by including all of the two-phase boundary layer parameters such as gravity, effect of vapor shear, inertia, energy convection and pressure gradient. For this full two-phase boundary layer system, the boundary layer equations, boundary conditions and the interfacial conditions were first analyzed, and then discretized. A computer program in Mathcad, solving these discretized equations, was written to obtain the velocity and temperature profiles within the condensate, the velocity profiles within the vapor, the condensate film thickness and the local Nusselt number. The effects of pressure gradient, gravity, vapor oncoming velocity and sphere radius on these parameters were examined. By alternating the formulation of the problem, the results for the flow over a horizontal cylinder were obtained. These results were then compared with those for the sphere. Finally, the results for the system with Mercury vapor flowing on a sphere were obtained. All of these results were represented as diagrams and tables, and were discussed at the end of the study.

Prof. Dr. Cemil Yamali December 2004, 112 pages The purpose of this study is to investigate the laminar film condensation phenomenon of steam on a vertical tier of multiple spherical surfaces by using both analytical and experimental methods. The analytical heat transfer results were obtained by following the Nusselt type of analysis and represented graphically. In addition, in order to observe the real behavior of the film condensation, an experimental setup was manufactured and experiments were done. In analytical section / mass flow rate, (mean) velocity, film thickness, local heat flux and local heat transfer coefficient values were obtained and plotted as depending on angular position. Moreover, mean heat flux and mean heat transfer coefficient variations were presented with respect to diameter of the sphere and sub-cooling. On the other hand, for the experimental section, heat flux and mean heat transfer coefficient values were obtained and expressed as depending on sub-cooling. To see the effects of off-center angle, setup was inclined for different angles and experiments were repeated for each inclination angle. At the end of the study, mean heat transfer coefficients belong to analytical and experimental studies were compared to each other as well as to the literature.

Daylighting Systems : Development of Techniques for Optical Characterization and Performance Evaluation

Successful integration of daylighting systems requires the ability to predict their performance for given climates. In this dissertation, a bottom-up approach is applied to evaluate the optical performance of a selection of daylighting systems. The evaluations are based on the optical properties of the included materials, and part of the dissertation focuses on developing new optical characterization methods. The work on characterization techniques uses an integrating sphere method to characterize the transmittance of light scattering samples more accurately. The method's principle is to reduce the discrepancy in light distribution between the reference and the sample scans by using an entry port beam diffuser. For samples exhibiting distinct light scattering patterns, the benefits of improved uniformity outweigh the errors introduced by the diffusing material. The method is applicable to any integrating sphere instrument, and its simplicity makes it suitable for standard measurements. In addition to normal-hemispherical properties, many daylighting applications require knowledge of the system's spatial light distribution. This dissertation presents a method combining experimental techniques and ray tracing simulations to assess the light distribution from a Venetian blind system. The method indicates that ray tracing based on simplified optical data is inadequate to predict the light distribution for slat materials exhibiting both specular and diffuse properties. Ray tracing is a promising complement to experimental methods used to characterize light guiding or light redirecting systems. Here, spectrophotometric measurements of a scaled mirror light pipe validate a ray tracing model. The model shows excellent agreement with experimental results for both direct and diffuse incident light. The spectral evaluation shows no dramatic color changes for the transmitted light. The ray tracing model is used to evaluate four daylighting systems for a selection of Swedish locations. The percentage of occupied time when the studied systems achieve full design illuminance is relatively low, but the systems provide a valuable contribution to the required illuminance. Additionally, this dissertation provides an overview of available energy efficient windows and illustrates the importance of including the solar energy transmittance when evaluating window energy performance. Overall, this dissertation presents optical characterization techniques for improved performance evaluations of daylighting systems.

Marriageability and Indigenous representation in the white mainstream media in Australia

By means of a historical analysis of representations, this thesis argues that an increasing sexualisation of Indigenous personalities in popular culture contributes to the reconciliation of non-Indigenous and Indigenous Australia. It considers how sexualised images and narratives of Indigenous people, as they are produced across a range of film, television, advertising, sport and pornographic texts, are connected to a broader politics of liberty and justice in the present postmodern and postcolonial context. By addressing this objective the thesis will identify and evaluate the significance of 'banal' or everyday representations of Aboriginal sexuality, which may range from advertising images of kissing, television soap episodes of weddings, sultry film romances through to more evocatively oiled-up representations of the pinup- calendar variety. This project seeks to explore how such images offer possibilities for creating informal narratives of reconciliation, and engendering understandings of Aboriginality in the media beyond predominant academic concerns for exceptional or fatalistic versions.

Crystallisation spectrometer

An improved crystallisation spectrometer has been designed, built and tested. It is to be used by others to gain new knowledge about the solidification of matter by study of the crystallisation of hard sphere colloid samples that are an established model for the behaviour of some aspects of atoms. In this crystallisation spectrometer, expanded and collimated green laser light is Bragg scattered from the colloidal crystals as they form, and the diffracted light is focused by a liquid filled hollow glass hemispherical lens onto low cost CCD array detectors that are rotated about the optical axis to average the intensities around the whole Debye-Scherrer cone of scattered light. The temperature of the sample is controlled to +/-0.1„a, and because of the ability to change the refractive index of the sample particles with temperature, this is utilised to control the amount of scattering from the sample Also, this spectrometer uniquely exploits the refractive index match of the colloidal particles, the solvent, the bath liquid, and the glass used for both the sample bottle and the hollow glass hemisphere. A unique facility has been incorporated to permit tumbling of the sample prior to the measurement commencing to shear-melt any pre-existing crystals. This ensures that the sample is completely fluid and is at the correct temperature at the start of the measurement. The instrument is assembled on an optical table and is computer controlled. Results presented show that this new spectrometer with its use of the whole Debye-Scherrer cone of Bragg scattered light and other enhancements gives insight into the crystallisation process more than one order of magnitude of time earlier than previous light scattering experiments, providing new knowledge about the crystallisation process.

Physical/virtual sites: using creative practice to develop alternative communicative spaces

This thesis interrogates my and others?? creative praxis using the tools of the Internet, webcam, blogging and digital video, to elucidate possibilities for communication. I examine whether these tools are productive for my creativity and others?? in increasing communicative spaces and building social networks amongst the complexities of globalised culture. Many cultural commentators consider the Internet as a new kind of public sphere, developing community, strengthening the lifeworld and providing ethical discourse. The Internet, however, is a context not without problems. Still, less that one quarter of the world??s population has access, and computer illiteracy and governance (to name only a few) contribute to its limitations ?? this dichotomy is central to my investigation. I demonstrate that information communication technologies (ICTs) such as the Internet are radically altering our everyday lives and mediation is increasingly pervasive. I argue, therefore, that our globalised context demands alternative communicative spaces to mainstream media that allow diversity, plurality, intersubjectivity and new forms of interrogation. I ask whether the Internet can assist in the development of social networks and newest social movements (NSMs) by increasing civic bonds and communities. I posit communicative action, reflexivity and praxis as productive tools for a critical practice. I suggest that these theories are influential in researching the Internet??s potential in generating social awareness. I argue that the Internet can be used to construct social spaces and, in conjunction with creativity, can increase its productive capacity in developing diverse and ethical communicative contexts.
