<p> This thesis contributes to the computer-aided design (CAD) of spiral inductors and LC resonators with spiral inductors exploiting full-wave electromagnetic (EM) analysis.</p> <p> The spiral inductor is widely used in radio frequency integrated circuits (RF ICs), such as low noise amplifiers (LNA) and voltage controlled oscillators (VCO). The design of spiral inductors has a direct influence on the performance of these circuits. Recently proposed optimization methods for spiral inductors are usually based on circuit models, which are computationally efficient but inaccurate compared with full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulations.</p> <p> For the first time, we develop an optimization technique for the design of spiral inductors and LC resonators exploiting both the computational efficiency of a (cheap) circuit model and the accuracy of a full-wave EM analysis, based on geometric programming (GP) and space mapping (SM). Simulation and optimisation of spiral-wound reverse osmosis process for the removal of N-nitrosamine from wastewater

Yes / N-nitrosamine in wastewater treatment processes can contribute to several public health impacts including human carcinogens even at very low concentration. In this work, spiral-wound reverse osmosis (SWRO) process is used to remove N-nitrosamine compounds from wastewater. Effects of operating parameters of the SWRO process on the removal of N-nitrosamine, total water recovery, and specific energy consumption for a SWRO configurations are evaluated via simulation and optimisation. For this purpose, the one-dimensional distributed model developed earlier by the authors is modified by including different mass transfer coefficient correlation, temperature dependent water and solute permeability correlations and energy equations. The model is first validated by estimating a new set of model parameters using eight set of experimental data from the literature and is then used to simulate the process with and without energy recovery device to facilitate deeper insight of the effect of operating conditions on the process performance. The model is then embedded within an optimisation framework and optimisation problems to maximise N-nitrosamine rejections and to minimise specific energy consumption are formulated and solved while the operating conditions are optimized simultaneously.

Simulation and sensitivity analysis of spiral wound reverse osmosis process for the removal of dimethylphenol from wastewater using 2-D dynamic model

Yes / Reverse Osmosis (RO) processes are readily used for removing pollutants, such as dimethylphenol from wastewater. A number of operating parameters must be controlled within the process constraints to achieve an efficient removal of such pollutants. Understanding the process dynamics is absolutely essential and is a pre-step for designing any effective controllers for any process. In this work, a detailed distributed two-dimensional dynamic (x and y dimensions and time) model for a spiral-wound RO process is developed extending the 2-D steady state model of the authors published earlier. The model is used to capture the dynamics of the RO process for the removal of dimethylphenol from wastewater. The performance of the 2-D model is compared with that obtained using 1-D dynamic model before the model is being used to investigate the performance of the RO process for a range of operating conditions.

The purpose of this study was to look for tendencies that social media can contribute to exposing users to a stronger perception of opinion polarization, and further to see if the daily presence of social networking sites can put normative pressure on the users. The study was made using a survey with participants from Umeå University during the time frame of november-december 2014. The theoretical framework behind the study was mainly drawn from The Spiral Of Silence by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann and was further supplemented with more current research, studying the effects from The Spiral Of Silence in the modern and more fragmented media landscape that exists now then when her theory was written. Further theoretical tools for analysis of the results came from Michel Foucault and his discussions in Discipline and punish, specifically his views on how surveillance can be discontinous in practice, but still permanent in it’s effects. The results of this study indicates that social media users tend to isolate themselves from uncomfortable opinions, and do not follow or read opinions they do not already agree with. This indicates that social media plattforms can function as a contributor to opinion polarization among the users, and this study argues that the behavioural patterns of the most frequent users increases that tendency. Further more the study showed that a smaller network of friends seems to increase the users perception of normative pressures, and that user activity is correlated to how frequent they self-censor posts before- and after they are published.

Development and Validation of N-nitrosamine Rejection Mathematical Model Using a Spiral-wound Reverse Osmosis Process

Yes / In this paper, a one-dimensional mathematical model based on coupled differential and algebraic equations has been developed for analysing the separation mechanism of a N-nitrosamine in a spiral-wound reverse osmosis process. The model is based on Spiegler and Kedem’s work on mass transport and Darcy’s law and concentration polarization to analyse the pressure drop and mass transfer coefficient in the module feed channel respectively. The model is built using the gPROMS software suite and validated using N-nitrosamine rejection experimental data from the literature, obtained by using a pilot-scale cross-flow reverse osmosis filtration system. Analysis results derived from the model corroborate experimental data.
