D.Phil. (Leadership in Performance and Change) / Orientation: This thesis presents a model of spirituality in the workplace. Spirituality in the workplace has largely been avoided or neglected in the banking sector and is therefore ill understood. It shows little theoretical development and could very well be the next competitive advantage for business. Research question: A general research question guided the study, namely: "What are the subjective experiences of spirituality of a manager in a South African retail bank and how can these assist scholars in reaching an understanding of spirituality at work?” Research aim and objectives: The aim of the study was to explore and describe the concrete experiences and views of a branch manager of a retail bank with regard to spirituality in the workplace and to develop a model of it. The key objectives of the study were: · To develop an appropriate qualitative research approach to capture and unravel the experiences and views of the bank manager; · To study the work of prominent scholars in associated study fields in order to infer abstract constructs that could be used as analytic tools to illuminate the world of the bank manager, and · To develop a model of spirituality in the workplace by applying first-order constructs, that is, the concrete experiences and viewpoints of the manager, as well as second-order constructs, that is, the abstract concepts of scholars. Motivation for the study: Knowledge of spirituality in the workplace is in its infancy in the banking sector. Interest in the topic was raised by existential questions such as: Who are you? Where are you going? Why are you going there? The fact that human beings ask these questions, seek meaning and ask about the purpose of life fascinated me. This fascination was not limited to individuals' personal lives; I wanted to know more about spirituality as it is lived and felt in the workplace where workers spend a third of their lives; I also wanted to know the value of spirituality in the workplace for organisations. This finally led to my submission of a research proposal titled "Towards developing a model for spirituality in the workplace". The model I developed for spirituality in the workplace organises information in such a way that the relationships among the various elements are clarified. This theoretical framework provides an understanding for spirituality in the workplace. Research approach: A modernist qualitative research approach was employed, since I wanted to give my research participant a voice regarding spirituality in the workplace. The interpretive-constructivist research philosophy, and more particularly the assumption that reality is constructed by individuals interacting with their social worlds, underpinned my research. The research data were collected by means of a life history and analysed using Strauss and Corbin’s grounded theory. Regarding data management and storage, I followed Bogdan and Biklen’s (2007, p. 118) advice: pledge to keep your data physically well organised; develop a plan on how to achieve this; ensure that you stick to your plan; create a back-up system; have hard copies of all the recorded data in a manual filing system to secure valuable and often irreplaceable data should your computer become infected with a virus or dysfunctional for some other reason. I also ensured that all the data, whether paper-based or electronic, were kept safe and confidential. The writing style was mainly the scientific tale, but confessional, realist and autoethnographic tales were also used. The entire research process was influenced by symbolic interactionism, that is, seeing meaning as something that arises from the interaction between people, especially when they seek understanding of the world in which they work and live. Meaning was constructed through the researcher’s questions to, and discussions and interactions with the research participant.

trabalho em resposta às inquietações dos funcionários que buscam equilíbrio e bem-estar no
espaço laboral, essencialmente no ambiente hospitalar, de modo a atender as necessidades dos
usuários, dos colaboradores, das comunidades, e, estrategicamente pode ser uma nova
abordagem na estrutura organizacional, com o avanço na fronteira do conhecimento nesta área.
A ênfase desta dissertação incide sobre a percepção dos gestores sobre a espiritualidade no
ambiente de trabalho do Real Hospital Português de Beneficência em Pernambuco (RHP). Os
aspectos que motivaram a escolha do tema estão diretamente relacionados à carência de estudos
no que se refere à Espiritualidade no Ambiente de Trabalho (EAT) e por possibilitar novos
olhares dos gestores que poderão visualizar um rosto mais humano em suas funções. Assim, os
construtos tomados como base desta dissertação foram a Gestão em Hospitais, a Espiritualidade
no Ambiente de Trabalho, a Humanização no Ambiente Hospitalar e a Liderança Servidora. A
pesquisa caracteriza-se por ser qualitativa, utilizando como estratégia o estudo de caso, do tipo
exploratória. A coleta de dados foi realizada sob a forma de entrevista individual
semiestruturada e os dados analisados de acordo com a Análise da Pragmática da Linguagem
proposta por Mattos (2005). As observações foram efetivadas no ambiente do hospital e as
entrevistas realizadas com 11 gestores do RHP. Os resultados mostraram que a maioria dos
gestores percebe a espiritualidade no ambiente de trabalho, tal como foi proposta e, por estar
vinculada ao contexto hospitalar, existe uma forte correlação com a prática da humanização na
saúde. / The possibilities of spirituality definitions are gaining expression in the work field as a result
of employees seeking balance and welfare in the workspace, primarily in the hospital
environment in order to meet the needs of users, employees, communities, and it can
strategically be a new approach to the organizational structure, with the advance of the
knowledge frontiers in this area. The emphasis of this dissertation stands on the perception of
managers about spirituality at Real Hospital Português' work place in Pernambuco (RHP). The
aspects that motivated the choice of this theme are directly related to the lack of studies
regarding the Spirituality in the Workplace and allow managers to have a new perspective,
being able to have a more human look towards their tasks. Thus, the constructs used as the basis
of this work were the Management in Hospitals, Spirituality in the Workplace, Humanization
in the hospital environment and Servant Leadership. The research is characterized as
qualitative, using as strategy an exploratory-type case study. Data collection was carried out in
the form of semi-structured individual interviews and analyzed according to the Pragmatic
Analysis of the Language proposed by Mattos (2005). The observations took place in the
hospital environment and the interviews were made with 11 managers from RHP. The results
showed that most managers perceive spirituality in the workplace, just like proposed, and for
being linked to the hospital context, there is a strong correlation to the practice of humanization
in healthcare.

A cross-sectional survey design was used to answer three research questions. The sample consisted of medical professionals. A mail survey was administered at three public hospitals. A positive correlation was found between spirit at work and organizational commitment. Sense of community emerged as central to fostering spirit at work. Previous issue date: 2014-09-04 / The spirituality practice in the work has been the subject of research even within the administration, because it is related to the efforts and commitment of the employees of an organization, which refers to aspects of organizational management. Spirituality in the workplace may also be associated to aspects of organizational culture, when this practice becomes an organizational value. Rego, Cunha and Souto (2007) emphasize that a work environment that practicing spirituality, develops five dimensions of spirituality like. the community sense in the team, the conditioning of the individual with the organization values, sense of contribution to the community, the joy at work and the opportunity for the inner life. The study aimed to identify the context of a specific organization, if the dimensions of spirituality adopted in the theoretical reference, they manifested in the perception of the organizations employees. For this, it developed a qualitative exploratory study with the method of case study, in a confessional educational institution in ABC Paulista region. Information was collected through interviews for analysis of the organization, as their culture as practice of spirituality in the workplace. It has also developed a documental analysis of the institution and field observations for better search results. It was found that the confessional educational research institution, it is an organization that in its organizational culture, they has documented spirituality values, practiced and perceived by collaborators. It was also found that the dimensions of spirituality addressed in the theoretical reference, features are perceived by collaborators in the organizations reality. There was emphasis on the dimensions of opportunity for the inner life and sense of community in the team. The organizations managers demonstrated in their depositions that are dedicated to the development of these dimensions and the perception of the institutions employees confirm these elements. So, through these two dimensions of spirituality, the other three are the basis for its development in the context of the research institution. This result can characterize elements in religious educational institutions, however, this research obtains its field boundary and demographic. Future researches in different denominational educational institutions and in different regions, can contribute to more comprehensive conclusions. / A prática de espiritualidade no local de trabalho tem sido alvo de pesquisas inclusive no âmbito da administração por estar relacionada ao empenho e ao comprometimento dos funcionários de uma organização, o que se refere a aspectos da gestão organizacional. A espiritualidade no ambiente de trabalho também pode estar relacionada com aspectos da cultura organizacional, quando essa prática se torna um valor organizacional. Rego, Cunha e Souto (2007), destacam que um ambiente de trabalho que pratica a espiritualidade, desenvolve cinco dimensões de espiritualidade, sendo: o sentido de comunidade na equipe, o alinhamento do indivíduo com os valores da organização, o sentido de préstimo à comunidade, a alegria no trabalho e a oportunidade para a vida interior. O estudo objetivou identificar no contexto de uma organização se as dimensões de espiritualidade se manifestavam na percepção de seus colaboradores. Para isso, desenvolveu-se uma pesquisa qualitativa de caráter exploratório, com o método de estudo de caso em uma instituição confessional educacional da região do ABC Paulista. Por meio de entrevistas foram coletadas informações para análise quanto a sua cultura e a prática da espiritualidade em seu ambiente de trabalho. Para um maior reforço dos resultados da pesquisa, também foi desenvolvida uma análise documental da instituição e observações de campo. Foi possível constatar que a instituição confessional educacional pesquisada trata-se de uma organização que em sua cultura organizacional, possui valores de espiritualidade documentados, praticados e percebidos pelos colaboradores. Também constatou-se que as dimensões de espiritualidade abordadas no referencial teórico, são características percebidas pelos colaboradores na realidade da organização. Houve destaque para as dimensões de oportunidade para a vida interior e sentido de comunidade na equipe. Os gestores da organização demonstraram em seus depoimentos que se dedicam no desenvolvimento dessas dimensões e a percepção dos funcionários da instituição confirmam esse fenômeno. Assim, através dessas duas dimensões de espiritualidade, as outras três encontram base para seu desenvolvimento no contexto da instituição pesquisada. Esse resultado pode caracterizar um fenômeno em instituições confessionais educacionais, porém, a presente pesquisa obtém seu limite de campo e demográfico. Pesquisas futuras em instituições confessionais educacionais diferentes e em regiões diferentes, poderão contribuir para conclusões mais abrangentes.

The Effect of Religiosity and Spirituality on Work Practices and Trust Levels in Managers and their Subordinates in Food and Nutrition Care DepartmentsOler, Jennifer S. 08 July 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which religiosity and spirituality affected daily work practices and leader/follower trust levels in foodservice and nutrition directors and their subordinates. A similar 72-item survey questionnaire was developed for both the directors and employees, which was completed by 129 directors and 530 employees. Both questionnaires contained questions on demographics, religious influences on work practices, trust characteristics, and three validated measures of religiosity: 1) worship service attendance (1=Religiosity Score), 2) influence of spiritual beliefs on daily life, and 3) frequency of prayer (2 + 3=Spirituality Score). Frequency data was gathered for all questions. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson's Correlation were used to assess the relationship of directors' and employees' Religiosity and Spirituality Scores compared to their daily work practices and trust levels. Two-sample t-tests evaluated differences in directors' and employees' perceived trust levels toward each other. Most directors and employees were women and Caucasian. Most of the directors and employees had earned a Master's degree and bachelor's degree, respectively. The religion most frequently reported was Protestant. Data analysis of the Religiosity and Spirituality Scores and demographics showed some differences in ethnic group, gender, age, and education level, although there was no consistently identified trend. Well over one-third of directors (40.3%) and employees (36.3%) attended worship services at least four times the previous month. The more directors and employees attended worship services, the more likely they were to demonstrate specific spiritual actions and attitudes at work. Generally, religiosity and spirituality did not appear to influence perceived trustworthiness in directors and employees. However, both directors and employees were rated as being highly trustworthy by their counterpart(s). Directors and employees tend to over-rate their own trustworthiness when compared to ratings by the opposite discipline. Degree of religiosity and spirituality did not consistently affect the way directors and employees rated each others' trustworthiness though it was related to how they perceived their own trustworthiness. Directors expected that their employees were more committed to their jobs than they actually were.

Previous issue date: 2017-05-18 / UNISINOS - Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos / O presente estudo busca compreender o processo de inclusão de pessoas com deficiência nas organizações, considerando todos os aspectos históricos ligados à formação do conceito de inclusão, que se refletem na atualidade, principalmente devido à necessidade das organizações de atenderem à legislação referente à Lei de Cotas, Lei 8.213/91, para pessoas com deficiência, regulamentada em 1991. Desde então, as organizações têm vivenciado momentos conturbados: a maioria delas não atende aos requisitos legais e acaba por sofrer penalidades severas pelo descumprimento da lei. O que se percebe, com o passar dos anos e as evoluções conquistadas pelos movimentos de inclusão, é que muito se avançou em estudos sobre os direitos das pessoas com deficiência e sobre as principais dificuldades encontradas na sociedade, na promoção da inclusão social e, principalmente, no mercado de trabalho. Porém, pouco se discutiu sobre a real forma das empresas se tornarem responsáveis por este contingente populacional, compreendendo e formando cidadãos sensíveis ao tema, pois o papel das organizações também é de formar pessoas. Devido à imposição da lei, nota-se a existência de um engajamento espontâneo por parte de algumas empresas e seus colaboradores. De forma quantitativa, este envolvimento ainda não repercute ou responde na velocidade que a dinâmica do mercado de pessoas com deficiência e a lei exigem. Se ainda não se consegue alcançar os propósitos de inclusão necessários para que as empresas preencham suas cotas, percebe-se que chegou o momento de propor uma nova forma de promoção da inclusão de pessoas com deficiência no mercado de trabalho. Identificou-se na teoria da Abordagem Integral e em conceitos da espiritualidade nas organizações, pela conexão de valores e propósitos individuais com o meio, os entendimentos necessários para a promoção de um ambiente organizacional formador de indivíduos mais conscientes e engajados ao tema. De forma complementar, a espiritualidade proporciona o ambiente adequado para estimular essas conexões dos indivíduos, pois seus conceitos consideram que as pessoas se desenvolvem a partir da tomada de consciência e conectividade do seu mundo interior com o seu mundo exterior. A partir dos achados teóricos, realizou-se uma pesquisa empírica, baseada em um roteiro de entrevista semiestruturado, envolvendo aproximadamente 40 participantes, representantes de grandes empresas da região de Porto Alegre. Participaram da pesquisa profissionais em cargos de liderança, pares de pessoas com deficiência e os próprios indivíduos com deficiência, além de representantes de RH em cada empresa. Todas as organizações envolvidas na pesquisa possuíam ações ligadas à inclusão, mas não necessariamente um programa formal dedicado ao tema. Os resultados encontrados proporcionaram a compreensão do atual cenário de inclusão nas organizações e proposição de um modelo diferenciado, que paradigmaticamente sugere um novo olhar sobre as pessoas com deficiência, a partir dos principais agentes envolvidos na causa: os indivíduos e as organizações que formam pessoas para a construção de uma sociedade mais inclusiva, um modelo de inclusão chamado integral. / The present research seeks an understanding about the process of including people with disability in the organizational environment, considering all its historical aspects involving the meaning of the concept, which reflects on the current understanding. Mainly because of labor laws’ recent requirements – Lei de Cotas, regulated in 1991, which involves the entrepreneurs to fill a quota of people with disability in the organizational environment. Since then, companies have been through difficult periods. The majority do not comply with the current regulation, and end up suffering several penalties. All of the inclusion movements’ accomplishments, the advanced studies about people with disability’s rights and the main difficulties for society to promote a real inclusion in the market place make it obvious how far we are from getting to a more diverse workplace. The discussion whether to make companies fully responsible for complying with this regulation as well as educating their employees to be more thoughtful is fairly new; after all, the work environment is not only meant for a job, but also for developing empathetic human beings. Due to this new regulation, a spontaneous engagement by some companies and their employees can be noticed. This involvement does not echo responds as quickly as the market dynamic of people with disability and the labor law need. Thus, the moment to propose a new way to promote inclusion effectively has arrived. It has been identified, within the theory of Integral Approach and the spirituality in the workplace, the crucial concepts to promote an organizational environment that develops conscious and engaged people in this matter. Additionally, spirituality in the workplace provides the appropriate atmosphere to encourage individual connections, once its concepts contemplate people’s development through the awareness and connectivity with themselves and others. Through theoretical findings, an empirical research was performed, based on a semi-structured interview script, with approximately forty participants, representing large companies from Porto Alegre area. Amongst the participants, there were leaders, peers of people with disability, people with disability themselves and HR representatives in each company. Every organization involved in the present research had initiatives to promote inclusion of people with disability, but not necessarily a formal program. The findings have provided a comprehensive understanding of the current diversity scenario in the organizational environment as well as have offered a different possibility of promoting it, which suggests a new way of seeing the subject. Firstly, with the action of the main agents involved in the cause, individuals and companies start developing people to build a more inclusive society: through a model of inclusion named integral.

Spiritual well-being, meaning and work performance : narratives of healthcare sales representatives in MalaysiaYee, Jeffrey January 2015 (has links)
This research focuses on spiritual well-being in the workplace and its relation to work performance. Extant empirical studies have mostly focused on demonstrating statistical links between these two concepts to the exclusion of qualitative studies that can better explain what spiritual well-being may be and how the experience is possibly related to work performance. Especially under-researched is the ground-level employees’ perspectives and the possible incompatibility of spiritual and organisational goals. This research thus examined the experiences of spiritual well-being among successful healthcare sales representatives in Malaysia, particularly on how their spiritual inclinations or their inclination for meaningfulness interfaced with the need to meet work targets. This qualitative research is exploratory and is framed within a constructionist epistemological stance. It used narrative inquiry as its methodology. Its primary data were stories successful healthcare sales representatives in Malaysia told about their work. These were collected and analysed using narrative interviews and narrative analysis respectively. What the research found was that the relation between spiritual well-being and work performance was depicted to be diverse, fragile and transitory. This was predicated on the ground-level employees’ experience of the interface between their spiritual inclinations and the need to meet work targets, which was diverse and changeable. What the research also found was that spiritual well-being resembled an experience that was constructed as employees engaged with their work. Spiritual well-being is thus neither merely found at work nor merely brought to work but constructed in the interplay between the employees’ spiritual inclinations and what they do at work. The research contributes to theoretical development in the area by advancing an expanded understanding of spirituality in the workplace. It demonstrates that spiritual well-being is contingent upon the work employees do, and the extent to which the work may be amenable for the construction of the experience. Thus, the relation between spiritual well-being and work performance ought to be understood from the way individual employees construct and individualise their experience of work. The research also foregrounds the importance of using models of organisation that accommodate the constructed, interactive and evolving nature of spiritual well-being in the workplace.
