Relevance of culture for stakeholder theory : an ethnographic examination of a sport event in Taiwan / Ethnographic examination of a sport event in Taiwan

Wang, Chung-Hsiang, Ph. D. 30 January 2013 (has links)
Researchers who focus on strategic management and event management have used stakeholder theory to understand the relationships between a focal organization and its stakeholder. Nevertheless, achieving collaborative solutions can be difficult due to the widely varying values among actors as well as the influence of institutional forces such as legal or social norms. Furthermore, organizational, industrial, and national cultures in which these norms, values, morals, and ethics are embedded vary enormously. What varies culturally, however, is the perception of stakeholders and how a focal organization interacts with its stakeholders. What has yet to be examined in depth, however, is the relevance of national culture on stakeholder theory and factors that facilitate or impede networking and alliance formation for and through events in different cultural setting. The main research objective of the study is therefore to re-examine the relationship and interactions between a sports event organization and its stakeholders in Chinese culture. By conducting an ethnography study on a sport event company in Taiwan, this study attempted to perform a cultural configuration on the Western-developed stakeholder theory. The methods of data collection in this ethnographic study include participant observation, interviews, field notes, event analysis, and document analysis. Thick descriptions with detail the patterns of culture and social relationships in this specific cultural context are generated. A thematic was performed and thirteen themes emerge. Eleven of them are related to guanxi and concepts of stakeholder theory. The other two are not directly related but unique to the context of this study, i.e., the sport industry in Chinese society. Themes related to guanxi and concepts of stakeholder theory fall broadly into four categories: managerial level, organizational level, inter-organizational level, and macro level. The results suggest that Chinese culture does indeed have, at various levels, a profound influence on stakeholder theory. The finding of this study also indicates that the guanxi, renqing, and mianzi that embedded in Chinese culture could have a substantial influence on legitimacy, trust, and reciprocity that determine the way CEOs recognize and interact with their stakeholders. In conclusion, this study, coming from such an interpretivist viewpoint, uses an ethnographic approach to seek alternative and narrative accounts in a different national culture for stakeholder theory development. Lastly, limitations and recommendations for future studies are provided. / text

Training of sport event managers for the South African context

Steyn, Emma 14 November 2012 (has links)
M.Tech. / Sport has become the broadest common cultural denominator in almost all societies (Lapchick, cited in Gouws, 1997). As a result, sporting events have become an increasingly popular means for achieving political, cultural and economic benefits for the host nation (Parent, 2008). Consequently, this has led to an increased demand in the value of diverse skills in the sport event management field. This is to cope with the increased complexities surrounding sport event management and thus requires a distinct body of knowledge and skills to be developed (Quatman, 2008). However, concern over the lack of a relevant base of common knowledge (NASPE-NASSM, 1993) as well as pertinent training programmes to prepare sport managers for the contemporary sport events industry has resulted in current graduates not necessarily meeting the needs or expectations of the industry. As a result, there appears to be a gap between the current event management curricula outcomes at higher education institutions (HEIs) in South Africa and the expected competencies of sport event managers in practice. The aim is therefore to develop guidelines for sport event management training in higher education institutions on various HEQF levels (DoL, 2008) to address the competencies required by managers for the South African context. This translates into objectives, namely: i) to identify, conceptualise and unpack sport event management competencies required by sport event managers, ii) to investigate the curricula of sport event management at higher education institutions in South Africa, iii) to investigate the importance of different competencies required by sport event managers in South Africa, iv) to investigate the current level of competencies of practitioners regarding sport event management in South Africa, v) to provide a background on the current education system in South Africa and vi) provide guidelines for sport event management training in higher education institutions at various HEQF levels (DoL, 2008) to address the competencies required by managers for the South African context. The research design is descriptive in nature, with quantitative methods in the form of questionnaires utilised to collect the data. The sample includes trainers¹ from HEIs in South Africa offering sport event management, and subsequently sport event management, as well as practitioners² from HEIs in South Africa and sport event managers from selected sport companies in Gauteng.

Att vägledas av en fyr : En studie om förhållanden i tre Sport event-organisationer / Guided by principles : A study of conditions in three sport evenr organizations

Löv, Jakob, Silvandersson, Johan January 2009 (has links)

Sládek, Jiří January 2021 (has links)
Title: Study of satisfaction of Czech beachvolleyball championship participants compared to analogous foreign tournaments Aims: The main aim of this diploma thesis is to determine satisfaction of beach volleyball players with the Czech beachvolleyball championship in Opava 2020 in comparation with foreign tournaments. Following these results recommendations and advice for improvement of the Czech beachvolleyball championship are proposed. Methodology: The main methods used in this thesis are electronic questionnaires and semi- structured interviews. Creation of the questionnaire was inspired by the SERVIMPERF method and Brady's model. The questionnaire was investigating 26 attributes overall. The data set consists of players from Czech's beach volleyball's national team. Interviews were conducted with two national team players, and the aim was primarily to add to the information obtained from the electronic questionnaires. Results: The obtained data is interpretated via graphs, mostly by cross-tab classification and tables. These data showed that the players were not content with the vast majority of investigated attributes of the 2020 Czech beachvolleyball championships. Comparatively, the foreign tournaments are in most of the attributes satisfying. In the resulting comparison the foreign...
