The potential economic impact of hosting major sports events in South Africa14 January 2014 (has links)

(Economics) / The financial involvement of the public sector in bidding for and hosting major international sporting events has taken various forms, including guarantees of events, sponsorships and direct government expenditure. The primary argument for the substantial use of public funds in the hosting of major events focuses on the ability to generate economic benefits for the public that exceed the costs involved. The scarcity of public funds in the public sector has led to growing scrutiny of allocation of public funds to support sporting events. The dissertation assesses whether or not the overall impact of major sporting events can justify the public funds used. The socio-economic and other impacts of different events, in both developed and developing countries, based on their experiences in hosting different sporting events as well as South Africa’s own experience, have been evaluated in this study. It is the contention of this dissertation that although major international sporting events ostensibly have positive economic spin-offs for the host country, this does not appear to be supported by evidence. Given the weak evidence or lack of evidence that major international sporting events can produce net benefits, it is not clear what motivates countries to fiercely contest for hosting rights. This dissertation therefore questions whether the hosting of major international sporting events is pursued for pure economic reasons.

so called "second innings"-- of South African cricket. It
examines the role played by the tripartist relationship between
the state cricket's administrative structures, and the private
sector in the reconstruction of a national cricketing code.
The case study of cricket development programmes is viewed
as a social metaphor that extends beyond the cricket boundary
and which allows for a focused analysis of the current issues
that surround both the discourse and practice of "sports
development". Thus the metaphor of cricket development is
considered as a singular lens through which to assess the wider
processes of development, "nation-building" and transformation
in South African society.
Cricket development programmes have made a significant
impact on the reconstruction of South African sport, but have yet
to fundamentally transform the nature of South African cricket.
Despite the attempts to level the playing field through
development initiates, the contemporary reality of a disparate
social order continues to determine and define the codes of South

Transformational leadership and organisational effectiveness in the administration of cricket in South AfricaRistow, Adrian January 1998 (has links)
After years of isolation from the international sporting arena, South African sports teams have recently achieved much success. This study is concerned specifically with managing for organisational effectiveness in South African cricket. According to the theory of transformational leadership, there should be a positive relationship between this style of leadership and organisational effectiveness. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire was used to collect information about leadership while data for organisational effectiveness, the dependent variable, was collected using the Effectiveness Survey for Cricket Administration. Most of the results regarding the relationship of the transformational leadership factors and organisational effectiveness were significant. On the other hand, most of the results regarding the relationship of the transactional leadership factors and organisational effectiveness were not significant. The overall results provide general support of the relevance of the transformational leadership theory in the context of cricket administration in South Africa. The results also support Bass's (1990b) argument of the universal application of the transformational leadership theory.

Abstracts in English and Southern Sotho / The past five decades have seen the global emergence and growth of monitoring and evaluation (M&E), which has since become a crucial feature and tool in modern-day programme management. The South African government has in recent years embraced M&E in the South African public service, in order to influence and accelerate the achievement of government’s objectives and mandates.
M&E is predominantly implemented in South African public institutions to promote effectiveness and efficiency in public service delivery. It is also used to promote transparency in decision-making, spending of public funds, and good governance, by ensuring that all protocols are observed. M&E also assists the government in tracking the progress of its programmes and policies.
M&E is a relatively new practice in South Africa, and it is complex and skills intensive, making it challenging to implement. In most cases, poor coordination and management of M&E contribute greatly to poor M&E performance in South Africa. The policy environment is to some extent supportive of M&E in South Africa, as there are various policy documents developed around M&E. The government is actively engaged in the development of M&E policies and trying to find ways to make them work.
The focus of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of monitoring and evaluation activities at the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture, and Recreation (GDSACR). The literature section outlined the theoretical framework and the application of monitoring and evaluation both locally and globally.
The empirical research explored how M&E is implemented at GDSACR, and how it assists GDSACR in achieving its strategic objectives. The empirical study further investigated how M&E contributes towards the achievement of social cohesion and nation-building at GDSACR. The research links the existing M&E theories to practical implementation of M&E at GDSACR, moreover, establishes intricacies of implementing M&E in public institutions with multiple policies and projects. The dissertation provides an opportunity for GDSACR to revisit its M&E practices and move in a direction in which M&E is the cornerstone of project management at GDSACR. Motives for volunteering in sport organisations and the relationship with volunteer commitment and volunteer satisfactionTshabalala, Lebamang Francis 01 1900 (has links)

(Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences), Vaal University of Technology. / Volunteering is a core component of sport service delivery and remains essential to the viability of the sport system in many sport organisations and communities. To this end, it has become incumbent for them to ensure that a sufficient pool of volunteers exists. Despite this assertion that volunteers in sport organisations are considered such a valuable resource, they are increasingly scarce and there is a considerable debate about the underlying structure or dimensionality of volunteer motives. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to examine motives for volunteering in sport organisations within Gauteng province and its relationships with volunteer commitment and volunteer satisfaction.
This research drew from the convergence of the social exchange and self-determination theories that were used in this study to provide a theoretical understanding as to why people engage in volunteer work and the outcomes thereof. In order to achieve the primary objective of the study, a quantitative research approach was adopted and a cross-sectional descriptive survey was utilised. A non-probability convenience sampling procedure was also adopted. Prior to the main survey data collection, a pilot study was undertaken by administering a questionnaire to 40 participants who did not form part of the main survey. The main survey data was thereafter acquired from 270 volunteers from conveniently selected sport organisations within Gauteng province through a structured self-administered questionnaire.
The data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS version 26.0) and the reliability and validity analysis yielded satisfactory results in terms of the measuring instrument. Descriptive statistics were also computed to summarise the data into usable information by making use of frequencies, means and standard deviations. Exploratory factor analysis was used to statistically aggregate the large number of observed measures (28 items) relating to independent variable (volunteer motives) into a smaller set of three unobserved (latent) variables called factors while regression and correlation analysis were undertaken to establish the relationships among the study constructs in line with the objectives of the study. Results fromcorrelation and regression analysis respectively (r = 0.440; β= .410) revealed that volunteer motives significantly contribute towards enhancing volunteer commitment among volunteers in sport organisations. Furthermore, the study’s results indicated that volunteer commitment, in turn, contributes towards volunteer satisfaction of volunteers in sport organisations (r = 0.561; β= .561).
Based on these results, this study recommends, among others, that management of sport organisations should explore the effectiveness of implementing an internal system of self-evaluation as a starting point to examine motives for volunteering. Furthermore, it is recommended that sport organisation management should develop an organisational culture which assigns authority and responsibility to sport volunteers.
The study concludes by affirming the achievement of the study’s objectives, highlighting its limitations as well as identifying future research opportunities.
