Analysis of Urban Heat Island Intensity Through Air Mass Persistence

The bulk of synoptic weather type research related to urban climate focuses on human health impacts; however, recent studies have begun to quantify urban heat island (UHI) magnitudes by weather type, or air mass classification. This study presents an analysis of UHI intensity through synoptic-scale air mass persistence during the spring season for four UHI-prone United States cities. Historical daily weather types for Birmingham, Alabama; Charlotte, North Carolina; Louisville, Kentucky; and St. Louis, Missouri were extracted from the Spatial Synoptic Classification database for 40 years from 1980 through 2019. Daily minimum surface air temperature data were downloaded from the Global Historical Climate Network to compute UHI. The historical daily weather type data were converted into a record of persistence, or the length of consecutive days that a synoptic weather type was in place at each location. A descriptive climatology of SSC weather types and UHI at each location was constructed before UHI magnitudes were segregated by day of persistence and examined for differences in intensity. Climatologically, the four urban areas experienced an increase in warm weather types at the expense of cool weather types throughout the study period. Specifically, the persistence of moist tropical weather types increased at a statistically significant rate at Birmingham, Charlotte, and Louisville, consistent with the theorized northward migration of the mid-latitude jet stream. Also evident is a statistically significant increase in UHI frequency and intensity at Birmingham, Charlotte, and Louisville during the study period. Results show that the moisture character of a weather type is an important differentiating factor in UHI intensification, as the mean UHI was found to increase with the persistence of dry weather types and decrease with the persistence of moist weather types, presumably reflecting differences in radiational heating and cooling with atmospheric moisture content. The most intense UHIs and the largest UHI magnitude increase by day of persistence are associated with dry weather types, which have become more frequent since 1980. The findings suggest that larger magnitude UHIs may become more common in the future should dry weather type persistence continue to increase. Higher urban temperatures put human health at risk due to a well-linked relationship between heat and mortality and morbidity rates. The effects of heat are cumulative; the more common persistent, oppressive days become, the larger the impact. / Master of Science / Most of the research related to variation in the warmth of an urban area relative to the surrounding rural area, or the urban heat island (UHI) effect, under varying air mass conditions (temperature and humidity) has focused on human health impacts. This study examines UHI intensity through regional-scale air mass persistence during the spring season in four UHI-prone United States cities. Historical daily air mass conditions in the form of weather types for Birmingham, Alabama; Charlotte, North Carolina; Louisville, Kentucky; and St. Louis, Missouri were downloaded from the Spatial Synoptic Classification database for the 40 years from 1980 to 2019. UHI values for each urban location were calculated using daily minimum air temperature data from the Global Historical Climate Network. A descriptive climatology of weather types and UHI magnitude at each of the four urban locations established long-term means and trends before analysis of UHI intensity through varying weather type residence times, or persistence. Time series analyses align with previous indications of an increasing persistence of weather types and an increase in the frequency of warm weather types at the expense of cool weather types during the spring season. An increase in both UHI frequency and intensity occurred through the study period at Birmingham, Charlotte, and Louisville. The mean intensity of the UHI was found to increase with the persistence of weather types of low humidity and to decrease with the persistence of moist weather types. The largest mean UHI and the largest UHI magnitude increase by day of persistence are associated with low humidity weather types, which have become more frequent since 1980. The impacts of heat are cumulative; persistently elevated temperatures are detrimental to human health.

The Construction of a United Great China: A Comparative Study of the CCTV Spring Festival Galas, 1984-86 and 2004-06

The Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year, is the most important festival in China. On every Lunar New Year's Eve since 1983, the state-run China Central TV (CCTV), the only national TV station in China, has held a celebrating gala. This thesis attempts to examine the CCTV Spring Festival Galas as a case study of China's statist nationalism. The research questions of this thesis are: what techniques and technologies have the CCTV Spring Festival Galas used to construct a Chinese national space? How have the CCTV Spring Festival Galas describe the Chinese national space? And what changes have taken place in these techniques and technologies as well as in the descriptions? To answer these questions, this thesis conducts a comparative research, comparing both the commonalities and differences between the galas of 1984-86 and those of 2004-06. Employing an interpretative textual analysis approach, it analyzes the videos of these six years' galas and explores the political meanings of words and programs in the galas. This thesis finds that in order to imagine a united Chinese national space, the galas mainly represent China in terms of classes, ethnic groups and places. With the presence of minorities and people from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, the galas focus on the boundary of the Chinese nation to construct the unity of China. Furthermore, in order to construct the greatness of this united Chinese national space, the galas use heroes and sites to symbolize China. The presence of traditional elements helps create a temporal dimension of the Chinese national space. As a result of, and in response to, the socio-economic changes in the last two decades, the techniques and technologies used by the galas have changed. Besides the great changes in stage settings and technologies, the major changes in the techniques include: in the 2004-06 galas, hosts play a much more important role in interpreting the political meanings of the programs and presenting the state's nationalist narrative to the audience, the Chinese Communist Party occupies a more central place in the galas, and home increasingly means individual family instead of the country of China. Correspondingly, the way the galas treat singers, actors, and hosts from Hong Kong and Taiwan has also changed. / Master of Arts

The economics of spring turkey hunting in Virginia

This study explored the economic aspects of spring turkey hunting in Virginia. Because spring turkey hu nting is a nonmarket good, a market price does not exist for it. Data on hunters' expenditures on equipment and licenses is useful but does not represent the total economic value of the resource. The total economic value includes the hunters' willingness to pay above the expenditures they currently make. This value is called the net willingness to payor consumer surplus. It can be derived through several methods. In this study, the travel cost method (TCM) and the contingent valuation method (CVM) were used to derive this value. Using the TCM, the net economic value of spring turkey hunting in Virginia was estimated at $9.1 million. This translated into an average value of $166.00 per trip. The contingent valuation method estimated the value per trip at $7.71. This value was extremely low due to problems with the procedures used. It is, at best, a lower bound estimate of the net willingness to pay per trip. The TCM values are more appropriate to use because they are based on hunters' actual behavior. The TCM, unlike the CVM, derives an actual demand curve which allows the estimation of total net economic values. / Master of Science

Synthesis and Design of a Bimodal Rotary Series Elastic Actuator

A novel rotary series elastic actuator (RSEA) with a two-mode, or bimodal, elastic element was designed and tested. This device was developed to eliminate the compromise between human safety and robot performance. Rigid actuators can be dangerous to humans within a robot's workspace due to impacts or pinning scenarios. To increase safety, elastic elements can soften impacts and allow for escape should pinning occur. However, adding elasticity increases the complexity of the system, lowers the bandwidth, and can make control of the actuator more difficult. To get the best of both types of actuators, a bimodal clutch was designed to switch between rigid actuation for performance and elastic actuation for human safety. The actuator consisted of two main parts, a rigid rotary actuator using a harmonic gearhead and a drum brake designed to act as a clutch. The 200 W rotary actuator provides 54.7 Nm of torque with a maximum speed of 41.4 rpm. The measured efficiency was 0.797 due to a timing belt speed reduction that was then speed reduced with a harmonic gearhead. The clutch was a drum brake actuated with a pantograph linkage and ACME lead screw. This configuration produced 11 Nm of holding torque experimentally but was theoretically shown to produce up to 51.4 Nm with larger motors. The elastic element was designed using finite element analysis (FEA) and tested experimentally to find a measured stiffness of 290 Nm/rad. / Master of Science

Determination of the location of the groundwater divide and nature of groundwater flow paths within a region of active stream capture; the New River watershed

The relatively rapid stream capture of the New River basin by the Roanoke River basin provides a unique example of topographic change within a tectonically inactive environment. A previous investigation of abandoned river deposits has shown the capture of ~225 km2 of New River basin area, which has caused approximately 250 m of incision by the Roanoke River (Prince et al., 2011). Difference in base level elevations between the lower Roanoke to the higher New River could be the source of potential energy driving rapid incision (Prince et al., 2011). Significant incongruities in base level elevations at the boundaries of an aquifer can steepen the gradient and shift the groundwater divide further toward the higher elevation boundary (Yechieli et al., 2009). If a steep groundwater gradient and expanded groundwater basin exists beneath the Roanoke River tributaries, this would suggest a groundwater control on incision and capture. In this investigation we incorporate average total head, measured from 18 domestic wells, and constant-head river boundary conditions into numerical models to calculate water levels and gradients between the rivers. We also utilized thermal patterns and particle tracking of spring locations to better understand flow paths in the region. Our results show the groundwater divide is shifted toward the higher elevation boundary, indicating that the groundwater basin is captured prior to surface capture. Flow pathways utilized by groundwater capture can be either diffuse or conduits, however further work should be done to better understand travel times and flow depths. / Master of Science

The impact of MENA conflicts (the Arab Spring) on global financial markets

Yes / It is believed that financial markets are integrated and sensitive to news – including political conflicts in some regions of the world. Furthermore, financial markets seem to react differently to information flows from one region to another. The purpose of this research is to discern the effects of the recent Middle East and North Africa (MENA) conflicts – commonly referred to as the Arab Spring – on the volatility of risks and returns of global and regional stock markets as well as Gold and Oil markets. To be more specific, we consider the main uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen and their impact on financial markets – as measured by the volatility of their risks and returns. In sum, we cluster 53 stock markets into 6 regions; namely, developed, developing, MENA, Asia, Europe, and Latin America countries, and use T-GARCH to assess the reaction of these regions to each uprising event independently. In addition, we use GARCH-M to assess the reaction of these regions stock markets as well as Gold and Oil markets to the uprisings of MENA as a whole. Our empirical findings suggest that the uprising events of MENA have more impact on the volatility of risks and returns of developed, developing, and Europe regions than MENA itself. In addition, although the results show that the volatility of both risks and returns of both developed and MENA regions are significantly affected by general conflicts in MENA, the volatility of MENA is affected during all intervals and with higher significance level. Furthermore, while MENA uprisings as a whole impact on the volatility of risk of oil (after 5 days) and gold (immediately after entering news) significantly, the returns of these markets are not affected by conflicts.

The photoprotective role of thermonastic leaf movements in Rhododendron maximum: potential implications to early spring carbon gain

Rhododendron maximum L. is a dominant subcanopy species in the southern Appalachian Mountains. R. maximum undergo distinct thermonastic leaf movements (TLM). The purpose of these movements has not yet been determined. Previous studies have suggested TLM are a photoprotective mechanism for the dynamic light environment of the subcanopy in a deciduous forest during winter. The present study aimed to determine the effects of restricting TLM on photoinhibition, net photosynthesis, and other gas exchange parameters, particularly during the early spring. After restricting TLM on certain leaves, we observed the above parameters from autumn 2005 to late spring 2006. Our results indicated that photoinhibition increased (lower Fv/Fm) in treatment leaves over reference leaves throughout the winter. The difference became greater during the early spring, when reference leaves began to return to normal levels of photochemical efficiency and treatment leaves sustained low Fv/Fm. Net photosynthesis was lower for treatment leaves than reference leaves. This became most significant during the early spring, when maximum carbon gain is possible. Finally, gas exchange parameters as measured by light and CO2 response curves did not indicate any significant difference between treatment and reference leaves post canopy closure. Out results suggest that TLM are an important mechanism for photoprotection, allowing leaves of R. maximum to recover quickly during the early spring and maximize their early spring carbon gain. / Master of Science

Mountain Air, Wild Scenery and Healing Waters: Elements of Retreat and the Revival of a Virginia Spring

Historic research into the Virginia Springs reveals a collection of vital interconnected seasonal communities centered on retreat from the unhealthy environs of the coast and devoted to resort in the mountains. Prior to the Civil War the Virginia Springs became renowned internationally as the summer home of the region's and the nation's elite. The collapse of the southern economy during and following the war meant the reorganization and often the failure of most of the Springs. A revival of sorts took place among the Virginia Springs during the late 19th century, consciously referencing the earlier "golden age." Many Springs found new life as schools, church camps, retirement homes and smaller hotels. Many simply left the scene altogether. Today little remains in the landscape to suggest the scale and vitality of many of these dynamic seasonal communities. And yet retreat to a wilderness setting remains appealing. Perhaps most compelling are the persistence of landscape qualities that contributed to their reputations as places of healing and retreat, namely the mountain air, the wild scenery and the healing waters. The Virginia Springs are in fact at an ideal location and represent ideal conditions for a new chapter in our own relationship with wild nature. Preservation efforts ought to focus on articulating such a relationship of building to landscape. While the scale of such a retreat might not equal that of its predecessors, a revived Virginia Spring, such as the Healing Springs of Bath County, can say much about how we find retreat in the 21st century. / Master of Landscape Architecture

Silent Spring's Metaphors: Insights for 21st Century Environmental Discourse

Metaphor as tool is a concept that has increasing analysis and support in the past several years. Long before the wealth of contemporary analysis, Rachel Carson produced Silent Spring, a book hailed as the motivation for a new environmental movement in the United States. The use of metaphor in Silent Spring is most apparent in the title. The title's focus, however poignant, even moving and motivating, is complemented by a rich set of metaphorical entailments and implications that reinforce and strengthen the title's metaphor and represent systemic forces and practices that lead to and prevent a spring of silence. Carson skillfully appropriated marketing metaphors used by chemical companies to sell insecticides and pesticides. She transformed these metaphors into powerful criticisms of indiscriminate chemical practices, forcefully undercutting industry arguments for chemicals as a means of guaranteeing "control." The effects of Carson's metaphors, built on a strong, complex foundation of scientific studies, invite reader participation and interaction as outlined by Lakoff and Johnson. The metaphors further entertain, educate, explain, describe in the sense of Wittgenstein's language games, and tightly integrate action and language. More fundamentally, her metaphors helped to establish a systems view and nature-oriented paradigm for analyzing, and resolving environmental issues and problems in the United States, creating a framework for debate and policy development and implementation, in the vein of Schon's and Rein's arguments for framing and policy design.
