The Effects of Sexual Education on Sexual Behaviors of Adolescents in Rural JamaicaSimmonds, Deborah 01 January 2019 (has links)
Adolescent pregnancy and the sexual behaviors of adolescents continue to be robust public health and social problems in Caribbean countries such as Jamaica. Numerous researchers have conducted studies on the impact of sex education on sexual behaviors and pregnancy patterns among adolescents with mixed results (i.e., a lack of knowledge) especially in rural communities. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the impact of school- or home-based sex education on sexual behavior and pregnancy patterns of adolescents aged 15 —19 years in the rural community of St. Thomas, Jamaica. The parental expansion of the theory of planned behavior and cognitive behavior theory constituted the theoretical foundation for this quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study. Secondary data from the 2008 Jamaica Reproductive Health Survey (N = 8,200) were analyzed. Descriptive statistics, chi-square, and Cramer's V were computed to determine the relationship and strength between the independent variables (school- and home-based sex education) and the dependent variables (pregnancy and sexual behaviors of adolescents). The results indicate a weak negative inverse relationship that was not statistically significant between sex education in school and sex education at home on adolescent pregnancy. There is a weak positive relationship between sex education in school on condom use and a positive measure of association between sex education at home on condom use. This study may be significant to local community health departments seeking inventive techniques for improving and enhancing existing programs. The results of this study also contribute new data on the impact of sex education on adolescent pregnancy and the sexual behavior of adolescents.

A Thomistic Critique of the Ethics of Alasdair MacIntyreOtte, Marcus 01 January 2014 (has links)
Alasdair MacIntyre argues in favor of a historicist Thomism in ethics and political philosophy. In his theory, sociological categories take up much of the space traditionally occupied by metaphysics. This peculiar feature of MacIntyre's Thomism, and its merits and demerits, is already a subject that has been taken up by many critics. In this thesis, these criticisms are supplemented and unified by identifying what is perhaps the most fundamental difficulty with MacIntyre's ethics: his version of Thomism is problematic because it treats epistemology as first philosophy. This misstep compromises MacIntyre's ability to provide a defense of moral objectivity, while also undermining his theory's usefulness in deriving moral rules. The result is an ethics of doubtful coherence. If Thomism is to offer a viable alternative to Enlightenment morality and Nietzschean genealogy, it must defend the priority of metaphysics with respect to epistemology.

This dissertation will demonstrate that a variety of Dominican Spanish in contact with St. Thomas English Creole (STTEC) revealed many features which are consistent with Dominican Spanish in other contact environments and some new features which are emerging as the result of uniquely STTEC influences. The most notable feature is the appearance of the vowel [ɛ] in Dominican Spanish, which in STTEC is highly indexical to St. Thomian identity. In the present sociolinguistic analysis, it was found that the variability of [ɛ] was significantly influenced by the following phonological segment, syllable stress, the language of the token, and the speakers’ social network ties and self-ascribed identity. This dissertation also includes a socio-historical background of St Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, a description of St Thomas English Creole, and a history of immigration patterns of people from the Dominican Republic to St Thomas, U.S.V.I. / Spanish

Hart. My primary aim is to outline a defense of the soft positivism of H.L.A. Hart in face of the criticisms of Ronald Dworkin by appealing to two nonexclusive roots of moral principles in the law: justice and criminal law.

This reasoning was that the richness and diversity of amphibians and reptiles could be acknowledge. The aim was to monitor the designated area and to identify the occurrence of individual species of amphibians and reptiles. Previous issue date: 2017-12-19 / This dissertation has as the main goal the identification of principles of a possible psychotherapy in the light of the tomasian psychology. To reach this objective, we initially discussed the importance of the theme, namely, the importance of Thomism and of a possible psychotherapy in the light of Saint Thomas Aquinas in the present days. In this regard, we believe, among other things, that Thomism has the ability to bring us closer to the truth about human nature in its fullest completeness. Next, we discussed and established some important theoretical assumptions for this work, which are the definitions of Tomasian psychology and Thomistic psychotherapy. We defined that Tomasian psychology is the theological treaty of Thomas Aquinas on the human soul, its essence, powers and acts; and that Thomistic psychotherapy would be a possible application of this psychology: a science and a prudential art whose objectives would be, through interpersonal help, to alleviate suffering and to seek the perfection of the human soul. Then, in order to identify in the psychology developed by Saint Thomas possible principles for a psychotherapy, we undertook a long study in which we tried to synthesize, systematize and analyze the entire content of Tomasian psychology, having as reference the Summa Theologica. Thus, we studied the human soul, its powers and acts, with emphasis on the following themes: the voluntary act and its principles, the ultimate end of man (and the happiness), the passions of the soul, and human virtues and vices. Finally, in the last chapter of this work, we presented, briefly, by way of conclusion, possible principles of a Thomistic psychotherapy, which were identified and inferred from the previous study. We believe that such principles can shed important light on the nature of the therapeutic relationship and on the means of pursuing the main psychotherapeutic goals, as previously presupposed, that are: the alleviation of emotional suffering and the pursuit of human happiness. / Esta disserta??o tem como objetivo principal a identifica??o de princ?pios de uma poss?vel psicoterapia ? luz da psicologia tomasiana. Para atingir esse objetivo, inicialmente, discutimos a import?ncia do tema, ou seja, a import?ncia do tomismo e de uma poss?vel psicoterapia ? luz de Santo Tom?s de Aquino nos dias atuais. Quanto a isso, acreditamos, dentre outras coisas, que o tomismo tem a capacidade de nos aproximar da verdade a respeito da natureza humana em sua maior integralidade. Em seguida, discutimos e estabelecemos alguns importantes pressupostos te?ricos para este trabalho, que s?o as defini??es de psicologia tomasiana e de psicoterapia tomista. Theology Engaging Evolutionary Theory: Fresh insights into the nature of GodFoord, Peter Michael, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2004 (has links)
This thesis explores the work of three theologians, Arthur Peacocke, John Haught and Denis Edwards, each of whom has made a significant contribution to the dialogue between contemporary evolutionary biology and the Christian understanding of God. The thesis explores and analyses how evolutionary theory throws light on key theological themes such as the nature of God's providence, especially in relation to pain, suffering and evil, and the meaning of Jesus Christ. The thesis involves a critical reading of the selected theologians' works, with their respective emphases on classical, process and kenotic types of theological thinking, and also draws on resources from the classical theological tradition, primarily St. Thomas Aquinas. The study gives a positive assessment of the contributions of the three chosen authors. It highlights the critical importance that theological methodology plays in formulating insights into the relationship of God to evolutionary processes. Peacocke emphasises the use of critical realism as the most credible methodology for theology, consistent with its use by science. Haught agrees with this approach stressing, however, that the data of theology is not the same as that for science. Consequently, he argues that theology ought to constitute the deepest layer of explanation for understanding reality and for understanding God as the ultimate explanation for evolution. Edwards argues that we must find a way of talking about God that is consonant with the reality of the world but that this God always remains ultimately Mystery. Peacocke, Haught and Edwards explore the usefulness of kenotic theology for explaining how belief in an omnipotent and supremely loving God can be reconciled with the existence of pain, suffering and evil in the creation. Although a kenotic approach can account for the scientific evidence of a “self-creative” and emergent cosmos along with the presence of suffering and evil, a more comprehensive theological viewpoint must include an understanding of how God is active in creation, sustaining it in existence and drawing it towards its divinely ordained end. Haught's argument for the presence of genuine contingency in the cosmos as evidence of God's on-going creativity is critically examined. Genuinely new possibilities, in evolutionary terms, new species, cannot be explained by material causation alone. In his “metaphysics of the future”, Haught argues that, despite the enormity of pain and suffering evidenced in evolution, God continues to lovingly draw the creation towards a hopeful and promised future in God. This thesis appreciates the value of Edwards’ trinitarian “God of evolution” for it combines a more classical theological approach with evolutionary theory. For Edwards, biological evolution is seen as a process within an ontologically relational creation that reflects the divine relations of the Trinity. The creation of being-in-relation flows out of, and reflects, the divine trinitarian relations of mutual love. Edwards’ insights into the nature of original sin and grace within an evolutionary context are also positively assessed. Both Peacocke and Edwards propose a Wisdom Christology as the most fruitful link between the biblical Sophia tradition and a creation theology, holding together insights on the divine Being, Wisdom and the Christ-event itself. Aspects of process and kenotic theologies can be usefully combined with Aquinas' expansive notion of God as ultimate Being. Through this synthesis, the drama of evolution is more intimately related with the ultimate reality, the Mystery of God. Throughout this thesis, gender-neutral language has been maintained except in some quotations of St. Thomas Aquinas.
