The microstructure and precipitation effects in Inconel alloy 690

Smith, Alan John January 1990 (has links)
Failure of Alloy 600 steam generator tubing in Pressurised Water Reactors (PWRs) has prompted the investigation of alloy 690 as an alternative material. Six commercially produced tubes and ten experimentally produced alloys have been examined with varying amounts of carbon, aluminium and titanium. Alloy compositions have been selected to investigate the individual and combined effects of these elements on the microstructure and corrosion behaviour in the environments of corrosion tests and simulated PWR conditions. Alloys were subjected to simulated mill annealing treatments at varied temperatures. Microstructural characterisation using optical and electron microscopy has demonstrated the effects of composition and thermal treatment in controlling grain size and carbide precipitation together with the interdependence between these structural details. Stress corrosion resistance of selected alloy 690 tubes has been examined with samples in an autoclave at fixed temperatures with environments based on pure water, sodium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide + sodium sulphate solutions. Susceptibility to intergranular attack has been related to aluminium contents of the alloy and to thermal treatments given. Results suggest a decreased resistance to IGA when aluminium is increased. Thermal treatments given to the samples appear not to be very significant to the amounts of IGA. The compositions and heat treatments used in the corrosion study were further examined on a dedicated scanning transmission electron microscope in order to correlate the effects of, chromium depletion, nickel enrichment and impurity segregation at grain boundaries, with corrosion characteristics. These results have shown the effect of varying the special thermal treatment temperature and time on the degree of enrichment / depletion / segregation and the corrosion resistance of the alloy. The mechanism of protection afforded by the special thermal treatment can thus be elucidated.

Modeling Two-Phase Flow in the Downcomer of a Once-Through Steam Generator using RELAP5/MOD2

Clark, Randy Raymond 31 January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to develop an accurate model of the downcomer of the once-through steam generator (OTSG) developed by Babcock & Wilcox, using RELAP5/MOD2. While the physical model can be easily developed, several parameters are left to be adjusted to optimally model the downcomer and match data that was retrieved in a first-of-a-kind (FOAK) study conducted at Oconee Unit I in Oconee, South Carolina. Once the best-fit set of parameters has been determined, then the model must be tested for power levels exceeding that for which the steam generator was originally designed, so as to determine the power level at which a phenomenon known as flood-back becomes a concern. All known previous studies that have been conducted using RELAP5/MOD2 have shown that RELAP over-predicts interphase friction. However, all of those studies focused on heated two-phase upflow, whereas the downcomer is modeled as adiabatic two-phase downflow. In this study, it is found that the original slug drag model for RELAP5/MOD2 developed by Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) under-predicts the interphase friction between the liquid and vapor phase within the downcomer. Using a modified version of the original slug drag model created by Babcock & Wilcox (B&W), an optimum multiplier is found for each power level. An increase of 1181% in interphase friction over the INEL slug drag model, which equals an increase of 4347% for the default B&W model provides the most accurate results for all power levels studied. Emphasis is also placed on modeling the orifice plate of the OTSG downcomer which has been added to stabilize pressure fluctuations between the downcomer and tube bundle of the OTSG. While several different schemes are explored for modeling the orifice plate, a branch connection with an inlet area 14.22% of that of the downcomer is used to model the orifice plate along with the volume that transitions the two-phase downflow to horizontal flow into the tube nest of the OTSG. Power levels exceeding that for which the steam generator was designed are tested in RELAP using the slug drag multiplier to determine at which power level a liquid level would occur and would flood-back become a concern. In this study, it is determined that a liquid level would form at 135% power and that at any higher power level, flood-back would be of concern for any user of the steam generator. / Master of Science

Thermo-economic optimization of a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) system using Tabu search

Liu, Zelong 11 November 2010 (has links)
Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) systems in conjunction with a primary gas turbine and a secondary steam turbine can provide advanced modern power generation with high thermal efficiency at low cost. To achieve such low cost efficiencies, near optimal settings of parameters of the HRSG must be employed. Unfortunately, current approaches to obtaining such parameter settings are very limited. The published literature associated with the Tabu Search (TS) metaheuristic has shown conclusively that it is a powerful methodology for the solution of very challenging large practical combinatorial optimization problems. This report documents a hybrid TS-direct pattern search (TS-DPS) approach and applied to the thermoeconomic optimization of a three pressure level HRSG system. To the best of our knowledge, this algorithm is the first to be developed that is capable of successfully solving a practical HRSG system. A requirement of the TS-DPS technique was the creation of a robust simulation module to evaluate the associated extremely complex 19 variable objective function. The simulation module was specially constructed to allow the evaluation of infeasible solutions, a highly preferable capability for methods like TS-DPS. The direct pattern search context is explicitly embodied within the TS neighborhoods permitting different neighborhood structures to be tested and compared. Advanced TS is used to control the associated continuum discretization with minimal memory requirements. Our computational studies show that TS is a very effective method for solving this HRSG optimization problem. / text

Návrh paroplynového zdroje elektřiny / Design of a combined cycle electricity source

Kadáková, Nina January 2020 (has links)
A combined cycle is one of the thermal cycles used in thermal power plants. It consists of a combination of a gas and a steam turbine, where the waste heat from the gas turbine is used for steam generation in the heat recovery steam generator. The aim of the diploma thesis was the conceptual design of a combined cycle electricity source and the balance calculation of the cycle. The calculation is based on the thermodynamic properties of the substances and the basic knowledge of the Brayton and Rankin-Clausius cycle. The result is the amount and parameters of air, flue gases, and steam/water in individual places and the technological scheme of the source, in which these parameters are listed.

Analýza přestupu tepla v parogenerátorech bloků VVER 440 / Trasfer Heat Analysis in Steam Generators in blocks of VVER 440

Roupec, Petr January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the heat transfer in steam generator of blocks in the nuclear power plant VVER 440. The steam generator represents the border between the primary and the secondary circuit. The heat is carried from a warm water from reactor to a cold water. The steam arises after the heat transfer and drives the steam turbine. An important quantity which represents the heat transfer is a heat transfer factor. This thesis is divided into theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part is mentioned a principle of the steam generator and the theoretical calculation of the heat transfer factor, which comes first of all from the character of the streaming in the steam generator. The practical part brings a comparison of the heat transfer factor calculated from data measured after the start of the third block of EDU in 1986, with the heat transfer factor which comes from the measurement after the power-increase for 105 % of nominal power of the same block in 2009. Further is shown the prediction of the heat transfer factor for next power-increase and the following service is shown too.

CFD Analysis of Aspirator Region in a B&W Enhanced Once-Through Steam Generator

Spontarelli, Adam Michael 07 June 2013 (has links)
This analysis calculates the velocity profile and recirculation ratio in the aspirator region of an enhanced once-through steam generator of the Babcock & Wilcox design. This information is important to the development of accurate RELAP5 models, steam generator level calculations, steam generator downcomer models, and flow induced vibration analyses. The OpenFOAM CFD software package was used to develop the three-dimensional model of the EOTSG aspirator region, perform the calculations, and post-process the results. Through a series of cases, each improving upon the modeling accuracy of the previous, insight is gained into the importance of various modeling considerations, as well as the thermal-hydraulic behavior in the steam generator downcomer. Modeling the tube support plates and tube nest is important for the accurate prediction of flow rates above and below the aspirator port, but has little affect on the aspirator region itself. Modeling the MFW nozzle has minimal influence on the incoming steam velocity, but does create a slight azimuthal asymmetry and alter the flow pattern in the downcomer, creating recirculation patterns important to inter-phase heat transfer. Through the development of a two-phase solution that couples the aspirated steam and liquid feedwater, it was found that the ratio of droplet surface area to volume plays the most important role in determining the rate of aspiration. Calculations of the velocity profile and recirculation ratio are compared against those of historical calculations, demonstrating the possibility that these parameters were previously underpredicted. Such a conclusion can only be confidently made once experimental data is made available to validate the results of this analysis. / Master of Science

Formigoni, André Luiz 09 May 2012 (has links)
The nuclear power plant steam generator tubes are subjected to different levels of stress and loading at high temperatures, reducing its lifetime due to the development of defects and corrosion. The Eddy Current Testing (ECT) is a nondestructive testing used to diagnose defects of corrosion and discontinuities in the inner and outer surface of heat exchanger tubes. These tubes are subject to failure by different mechanisms of chemical and mechanical degradation such as fatigue and stress corrosion crack. The ECT signals are affected by different noises making the analysis a difficult task to the inspector. This dissertation presents the results of the main characteristics from the ECT signals using the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) as an alternative method for the processing and signal analysis. The Hilbert-Huang Transform has its name given by the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA, as the result of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and the Hilbert Spectral Analysis (HSA) methods. Assessment of Subcooled Choking Flow Models in RELAP5 with Experimental Data in Simulated Steam Generator Tube Cracks

Mark A. Brown (5930558) 03 January 2019 (has links)
Choking flow plays an integral part not only in the engineered safeguards of a nuclear power plant (NPP), but also to everyday operation. Current pressurized water reactor steam generators operate on the leak-before-break approach. The ability to predict and estimate a leak rate through a steam generator tube crack is an important safety parameter. Knowledge of the maximum flow rate through a crack in the steam generator tube allows the coolant inventory to be monitored accordingly. Here an assessment of the choking flow models in thermal-hydraulics code RELAP5/MOD3.3 is performed and its suitability to predict choking flow rates through small simulated cracks of steam generator tubes is evaluated based on collected experimental data. Six samples of the data were studied in this work which correspond to steam generator tube crack<br>samples 6-11. Each sample has a wall thickness, channel length (L), of 1.14 mm. Exit areas of these samples, 6-11, are 2.280E-06 m^2, 2.493E-06 m^2, 1.997E-06 m^2, 1.337E-06 m^2, and 2.492E-06. Samples 6-11 have a channel length to hydraulics diameter ratio (L/D) between 3.0-5.3. Two separate pressure differentials of 6.89 MPa and 4.13 MPa were applied across the samples with a range of subcooling from 20℃ to 80℃ and 20℃ to 60℃. Flow rates through these samples were modeled using the thermal-hydraulic system code RELAP5/MOD3.3. Simulation results are compared to experimental values and modeling techniques are discussed. It is found that both the Henry-Fauske and Ransom-Trapp models better predict choking mass flux for longer channels. <br> <br> <br>

Simulation et aide au dimensionnement des chaudières de récupération

Dumont, Marie-Noelle 13 September 2007 (has links)
Heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) play a very important role in combined cycle (CC) power plants, where steam is generated from a gas turbine exhaust and supplied at the appropriate pressure and temperature to steam turbines for further power generation. The power plants achieve an overall efficiency above 55% and are ideally suited for combined heat and power generation in utility systems. The performance of energy conversion is improved by reducing exergy losses which implies reducing the temperature difference between the combustion gas and the steam cycle. Thus recent HRSG designs include up to three pressure levels with reheat in the steam cycle for maximum energy recovery and the use of high pressure, high temperature superheater and reheater in CC plants. Super critical boilers are also conceivable. Since HRSG performance has a large impact on the overall efficiency of the CC power plant, an accurate simulation of the performance of the HRSG is necessary. We present a steady state HRSG model to support design and rating simulations of vertical units. The simulation model, called FELVAL, divides the boiler in its rows. The row model can also be divided several times following the tube length, to better estimate the fumes temperature distribution across the hot gas path. Another model, called SUFVAL, carries out the design as well as the automatic generation of the FELVAL units and all the needed connections. The log mean temperature difference (LMTD) method and the effectiveness-NTU (ε -NTU) method are alternatively used to compute the overall heat transferred in each part of the HRSG. The problem of convergence of boiler models with more than one row in parallel is discussed. Good initialisation of the different variables is crucial to obtain convergence. The models are tested on 2 references HRSG. The first one is an assisted circulation boiler that operates at 3 subcritical pressure levels. The second is a once through boiler able to operate above the critical pressure of water. These new models were introduced into a commercial software of data reconciliation (VALI of Belsim sa) already used by the engineering and design departments of a HRSG manufacturer. They thus have a general-purpose package enabling them to make design, data reconciliation and simulation with the same software. Moreover, the use of FELVAL model will enable them to simulate any type of boiler and to obtain informations on the change of the temperatures inside the heat exchangers. This information is crucial for well monitoring closely the operation of a boiler, and better understanding its behaviour. This knowledge improvement allows to limit the overdesign and the safety margins and to reduce the investment costs.
