THE SEARCH FOR CONSISTENT INTONATION: AN EXPLORATION AND GUIDE FOR VIOLONCELLISTS

This paper provides a system that helps diagnose and address the specific challenge to cellists of intonation in any passage. Learning to play consistently in tune is essential for every cellist. In the over three hundred years of cello history, teachers have tried approaching the topic from a variety of perspectives. While each technique is useful in its own right, there is scant attention to how they work together. Viewing intonation through its component sub-skills is the first step toward integrating existing exercises and paving the way for further advances in pedagogy. The following paper categorizes training techniques according to the sub-skills of playing consistently in tune. This approach makes the learning and teaching of intonation manageable and approachable to cellists at all levels. What we do before the note, How we play the note, What we do after the note, and Putting it all together are the four broad categories of sub-skills identified. Within each of these sections, relevant exercises are presented and their efficacy explained. Examples are drawn from a wide range of sources including music education, my own educational experiences, music psychology, the Alexander Technique, cello pedagogy, professional cello teachers’ responses to a questionnaire, physiology, and neuroscience. By integrating published research in these areas, this paper provides a more comprehensive understanding of intonation. Instead of a wealth of techniques each claiming to resolve the challenge of playing in tune, the introduction of sub-skills allows for a methodological approach to intonation pedagogy.

A Comparison of EncryptionAlgorithms for Protecting data passed Through a URL

This project starts off with giving an overview of what sensitive data is, encryption algorithms and other required knowledge for this thesis project.This is because of the aim of this thesis project, that is to find the best way to encrypt data passed through a URL with a focus on protecting sensitive data in web applications. Data sent through the URL of a web application could be sensitive data, and exposure of sensitive data can be devastating for governments, companies, and individuals. The tools and methods that are used for this thesis project are described. An overview is given of the requirements of the web application that was to be created, the development of it, implementation and comparison of encryption algorithms. After that, the results of the encryption algorithms are compared and displayed together with a prototype of the web application and its encryption. The results are then analyzed in two different sections: security of the encryptions and performance tests. With the results given we conclude which one of the encryption algorithms is the most suitable for our web application, and otherwise when encrypting data through the URL of a web application. The results show that AES has a great advantage over 3DES both in security and performance when encrypting sensitive data passed through a URL.Those results are then used to build a secure web application to help and assist a broker during an open showing. The web application is then used together with information from interested buyers so it can be easy for the broker to contact them after the showing.

Aspects of higher dimensional Einstein theory and M-theory

This thesis contains two main themes. The first is Einstein's theory of general relativity in higher dimensions, while the second is M-theory. The first part of the thesis concerns the use of classification techniques based on the Weyl curvature in an attempt to systematically study higher dimensional general relativity and its solutions. After a review of the various classification schemes, the application of these schemes to the study of higher dimensional solutions is explained. The first application of the tensor approach that is discussed is the systematic classification of higher dimensional axisymmetric solutions. A complete classification of all algebraically special axisymmetric solutions to the vacuum Einstein equation in higher dimensions is presented. Next, the study of perturbations of higher dimensional solutions within this framework and the possibility of decoupling equations for black hole solutions of interest, as has been successfully done in four dimensions, is considered. In the case where such a decoupling of the perturbations is possible, a map for constructing solutions of the perturbation equation is presented and is applied to the Kerr/CFT correspondence. Also, the property of gravitational radiation emitted from an isolated source in higher dimensions is considered and the tensor classification scheme is used to derive the peeling property of the Weyl tensor in higher dimensions. This is shown to be different to that which occurs in four dimensions. Finally, after an in-depth exposition of the spinor classification scheme and its relation to the tensor approach, solutions belonging to the most special type in the spinor classification are classified. In addition, the classification of the black ring in this scheme is discussed. The second part of the thesis explores the use of generalised geometry as a tool for better understanding M-theory. After briefly reviewing the curious phenomenon of M-theory dualities, it is explained how generalised geometry can be used to show that these symmetries are not exclusive to compactifications of the theory, but can be made manifest without recourse to compactification. Finally, results regarding the local symmetries of M-theory in the generalised geometry framework for a particular symmetry group are presented.

Inquiry into J.S. Bach’s method of reworking in his composition of the concerto for keyboard, flute and violin, BWV 1044, and its chronology

Bach's Concerto for Keyboard, Flute, and Violin with Orchestra in A minor, BWV 1044, is a very interesting and unprecedented case of Bach reworking pre-existing keyboard works into three concerto movements. There are several examples of Bach carrying out the reverse process with his keyboard arrangements of Vivaldi, and other composers' concertos, but the reworking of the Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 894, into the outer movements of BWV 1044, and the second movement of the Organ Sonata in F major, BWV 527, into the middle movement, appears to be unique among Bach's compositional activity. This study will explore in some detail how Bach transforms these solo keyboard pieces into a three movement concerto for three concertino instruments and ripieno. As is the case with most of Bach's instrumental works, the question of where BWV 1044 fits within the chronology of Bach's works is unclear. Black holes and bubbled solutions in String Theory / Trous noirs et solutions régulières en théorie des cordes

Il existe des nombreuses solutions lisses dans le domaine de la théorie des cordes, caractérisées par une topologie non triviale (bulles) et sans sources localisées. Dans cette thèse nous analysons quelques-unes parmi les solutions les plus importantes avec les différents objectifs pour lesquels ils sont étudiés. Des solutions lisses en onze dimensions peuvent être interprétées comme microétats BPS de trou noir dans le cadre de la Fuzzball proposal. On peut promouvoir ces microétats à être quasi-BPS en plaçant de supertubes au minimum métastable à l’intérieur de ces solutions. Nous montrons que ces minima peuvent abaisser leur énergie lorsque les bulles se déplacent dans certaines directions dans l’espace des modules, ce qui implique que ces microétats quasi-BPS sont en fait instables. L’énergie dissipée par ces solutions correspond au rayonnement Hawking et on compare le taux d’émission et la fréquence à celles du trou noir correspondant. En modifiant la géométrie asymptotique de ces microétats on pourrait construire des microétats pour des trous noirs BPS sans charge électrique en cinq dimensions. Il faut donc trouver une nouvelle solution de supergravité en cinq dimensions dont la norme du vecteur de Killing passe de positive à nulle dans certaines régions. Nous construisons des exemples explicites où la norme du vecteur de Killing supersymétrique est une fonction réelle non-analytique telle que tous ses dérivés sont nulles à un point où le vecteur de Killing devient nul. Dans la solution de Lin-Lunin-Maldacena on trouve un mécanisme pour briser la supersymétrie similaire à celui utilisé pour les microétats quasi-BPS. Nous analysons l’énergie potentielle de branes M2 polarisés en branes M5. Lorsque les charges des M2 sont parallèles à ceux de la solution, nous trouvons des configurations stables. Lorsque les charges des M2 ne sont pas parallèles, nous trouvons des états métastables qui brisent la supersymétrie et nous analysons le processus de rayonnement d’énergie. Nous analysons aussi la solution de Klebanov-Strassler et construisons sa version T- duale dans la supergravité de type IIA. Pour cela une analyse approfondie est nécessaire pour choisir l’isomérie la plus appropriée. Notre construction est la première étape d’un programme pour tester la stabilité des antibranes dans la supergravité de type IIA. / There exist many smooth solutions in String Theory characterized by a nontrivial topology threaded by fluxes and no localized sources. In this thesis we analyze some of the most important bubbled solutions along with the different purposes they are studied for. Some smooth, eleven-dimensional solutions can be interpreted as BPS black hole microstates in the context of the Fuzzball proposal. One can promote these to be microstates for near-BPS black holes by placing probe supertubes at a metastable minimum inside these solutions. We show that these minima can lower their energy when the bubbles move in certain directions in the moduli space, which implies that these near-BPS microstates are in fact unstable. The decay of these solutions corresponds to Hawking radiation and we compare the emission rate and frequency to those of the corresponding black hole. By modifying the asymptotic behavior of these microstates one could be able to construct microstates for five-dimensional BPS black holes with no electric charge. To do so one needs to find a new supergravity solution in five-dimensions whose Killing vector switches from timelike to null in some open regions. We construct explicit examples where the norm of the supersymmetric Killing vector is a real not-everywhere analytic function such that all its derivatives vanish at a point where the Killing vector becomes null. In the Lin-Lunin-Maldacena solution we find a supersymmetry-breaking mechanism similar to that used for near-BPS microstates. We analyze the potential energy of M2 probes polarized into M5 brane shells. When the charges of the probe are parallel to those of the solution we find stable configurations, while when the charges are opposite we find metastable states that break supersymmetry and analyze the decay process to supersymmetric configurations. We analyze also the Klebanov-Strassler solution and construct its T-dual version in Type IIA. This is done by just reconstructing the solution expanded on a small region of the deformed conifold, after a thorough analysis to choose the most suitable isometry. Our construction is the first step in a program to test the stability of antibranes in Type IIA backgrounds.

Composite Anomaly in Supergravity and String Amplitude Comparison / Autour de supergravité par l'anomalie composée et l'amplitude en théorie de cordes

Dans ce projet de thèse, nous étudions le rôle joué par l'anomalie dû à la connexion composée dans les théories de supergravités dans l'espace-temps à huit dimensions. Ce genre d'anomalie est en effet engendrée par la structure quotient d'espace des champs moduli de la supergravité là où le nombre des super-charges posent des contraintes rigoureux. Notre accomplissement principal est de proposer des termes supplémentaires pour annuler cette anomalie dans la théorie de supergravité en huit dimensions avec seize supercharges. Ces termes, en outre, peuvent être considérés comme une manifestation des corrections provenant de la théorie de super-cordes et nous montrons par des calculs explicites qu'une amplitude sur une boucle dans la théorie de cordes correspondante reproduit ces termes. Motivés par cette démonstration de la cohérence entre la supergravité et la théorie de cordes, nous proposons un seuil mathématique pour la compactification de ces théories dans huit dimensions vers six dimensions sur une sphère en présence des branes de co-dimension 2. Ceci est une simulation de compactification sur une surface K3 à l'aide des branes. Nous montrons que la présence d'anomalie composé ne peut être justifiée que par des branes de co-dimensions deux. Nous discutons la dualité entre la théorie Heterotic et la théorie-F sous la lumière de 7-branes et puis la compactification des supergravités de dix dimensions sur K3 en présence des 5-branes. Tous cela nous ouvrent nouvelles voies pour étudier des aspects non-perturbatives de la théorie de cordes. Nous concluons avec un calcul sur deux boucles dans la théorie de cordes Heterotic de dix dimensions qui n'ont pas été beaucoup exploré dans la littérature. / We examine the structure of composite anomaly in maximal and half-maximal supergravity theories especially in eight space-time dimensions. The number of super-charges dictates the structure of the coset space of the moduli fields of the theory which in turn engenders the composite anomaly in such theories. Our main achievement lies in proposing counter-terms for such anomalies. These terms are of stringy nature and we show by explicit 1-loop amplitude calculations in corresponding string theories that those counter-terms are consistently provided by string amplitude. In the light of non-perturbative higher dimensional theories like F-theory, the anomaly cancelling counter-terms are seen to be related to co-dimension two branes e.g. 7-branes. We then use these results of 8-dimensional theories to provide for supergravity theories in six-dimensions by compactifying on a sphere in the presence of 5-branes. This is in fact a simulation of K3 compactification and our knowledge of composite connection provide us with threshold conditions to achieve such compactifications. All these analysis provide for greater insight into the non-perturbative regime of string theory. We then conclude with a calculation of 2-loop Heterotic string amplitude which has been very less explored in the literature.

Partial Displacement: En/decoding Spectral Thinking in Tristan Murail’s Mémoire/Érosion, and Two Compositions for String Quartet

This dissertation is comprised of a paper on Tristan Murail’s Mémoire/Érosion (1976) and a pair of my compositions—R[o/u]LE(s) for string quartet with percussion instruments (2016) and Projectile Motion (2018) for string quartet. The paper endeavors to draw attention to the rich, individualized voices within the French spectralist movement during its emerging phase, exemplifying various paths of en/decoding spectral thinking with Murail’s Mémoire/Érosion. In view of the interdisciplinary essence of spectralism, my analytical approach extensively adapts theories, research findings, and a posteriori knowledge from fields such as psychology, computer technology, and marketing so as to diversely reason how spectral thinking may be en/decoded by maneuvering information harnessed from the (pseudo-)spectral sources while interpreting the resultant perceptions. In comparison to the theme of the paper, which is heavily centered on pitch manipulation, the two compositions downplay such a musical dimension in varying degrees for different purposes. First, passive in nature and magnified by the incorporations of the percussion as well as the strings’ scratch tones, the reduced presence of pitch in R[o/u]LE(s) signals an attempt to navigate and investigate the topic of (Taiwanese) identity. Second, actively suppressed, pitch in Projectile Motion virtually becomes residual traces left by the heightened impulses of gesture, which, apart from being where the music largely gains its momentum, can be viewed as an expression of reflecting on issues of intimacy, accessibility, and cultural implications that contemporary music elicits in relation to a valued sector of my personal sphere.
