Καραΐσκος, Νικόλαος 21 December 2012 (has links)
There is a special category of physical systems, called integrable. The integrability of a system implies directly that this is exactly solvable, while there usually exists a large amount of symmetry. The theory of integrable systems, both classical and quantum, provides the appropriate tools for the study of these models in a systematic way. In this dissertation we study such systems, giving emphasis on the underlying algebraic structures and symmetries. In the first part, we describe elements of the theory of classic integrable systems. The systematic way of describing them leads to natural extensions, for example by introducing non-trivial boundary conditions or local defects, in a way that the integrability of the system is preserved. In the second chapter the theory of integrability at the quantum level is described, as well as the framework for exactly solving such systems through powerful methods, such as Bethe ansatz method. Important role in this framework is played by the braid group and its quotients, as they provide a systematic way of obtaining solutions of the equations of quantum integrability in a systematic manner. This chapter describes the framework for the construction of such solutions, and particular published results. Finally, chapter 3 describes brane embeddings in sphere submanifolds, which exist within string theory. Besides the construction of these embeddings, their relation with systems of physics of condensed matter is presented, using the powerful framework of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Accelerating digital forensic searching through GPGPU parallel processing techniques

Bayne, Ethan January 2017 (has links)
Background: String searching within a large corpus of data is a critical component of digital forensic (DF) analysis techniques such as file carving. The continuing increase in capacity of consumer storage devices requires similar improvements to the performance of string searching techniques employed by DF tools used to analyse forensic data. As string searching is a trivially-parallelisable problem, general purpose graphic processing unit (GPGPU) approaches are a natural fit. Currently, only some of the research in employing GPGPU programming has been transferred to the field of DF, of which, a closed-source GPGPU framework was used— Complete Unified Device Architecture (CUDA). Findings from these earlier studies have found that local storage devices from which forensic data are read present an insurmountable performance bottleneck. Aim: This research hypothesises that modern storage devices no longer present a performance bottleneck to the currently used processing techniques of the field, and proposes that an open-standards GPGPU framework solution – Open Computing Language (OpenCL) – would be better suited to accelerate file carving with wider compatibility across an array of modern GPGPU hardware. This research further hypothesises that a modern multi-string searching algorithm may be better adapted to fulfil the requirements of DF investigation. Methods: This research presents a review of existing research and tools used to perform file carving and acknowledges related work within the field. To test the hypothesis, parallel file carving software was created using C# and OpenCL, employing both a traditional string searching algorithm and a modern multi-string searching algorithm to conduct an analysis of forensic data. A set of case studies that demonstrate and evaluate potential benefits of adopting various methods in conducting string searching on forensic data are given. This research concludes with a final case study which evaluates the performance to perform file carving with the best-proposed string searching solution and compares the result with an existing file carving tool— Foremost. Results: The results demonstrated from the research establish that utilising the parallelised OpenCL and Parallel Failureless Aho-Corasick (PFAC) algorithm solution demonstrates significantly greater processing improvements from the use of a single, and multiple, GPUs on modern hardware. In comparison to CPU approaches, GPGPU processing models were observed to minimised the amount of time required to search for greater amounts of patterns. Results also showed that employing PFAC also delivers significant performance increases over the BM algorithm. The method employed to read data from storage devices was also seen to have a significant effect on the time required to perform string searching and file carving. Conclusions: Empirical testing shows that the proposed string searching method is believed to be more efficient than the widely-adopted Boyer-Moore algorithms when applied to string searching and performing file carving. The developed OpenCL GPGPU processing framework was found to be more efficient than CPU counterparts when searching for greater amounts of patterns within data. This research also refutes claims that file carving is solely limited by the performance of the storage device, and presents compelling evidence that performance is bound by the combination of the performance of the storage device and processing technique employed.

The second finale of Beethoven's string quartet Opus 130: a study of the composing score and autograph manuscript

Ross, Megan H. January 2013 (has links)
Scholars and performers have long wondered when and why Beethoven composed an alternative ending to his string quartet, Opus 130. The original, the Grosse Fuge, was an immense and heavy multi-sectioned fugal finale; the second was a much shorter and lighter hybrid sonata-rondo form finale. The second finale was the last substantial piece Beethoven composed and is reminiscent of earlier dance-like 2/4 Allegro finales composed by Beethoven, likely influenced by Haydn. This style is seemingly incongruous with our current understanding of Beethoven’s late style, centered around foreign harmonies and forms, with expansive thematic material. While research on this topic has been extensive, including studies in biography, source material, reception history, and harmonic and formal analysis, it has not led to a fully adequate understanding of this second finale. My study aims to provide a fresh understanding of this movement through the examination and evaluation of the later stages of its composition. The major sections of revision found in the composing score, Berlin, Deutsche Staatsbibliothek, MS Autograph 19c, and the autograph fair copy, Berlin, Deutsche Staatsbibliothek, MS Grasnick 10, are closely studied here for the first time. In order to highlight important steps in the creative process, I have selected four heavily revised areas from each of the sonata-form sections of this movement as shown in both manuscripts. My interpretation of these revisions is based on comparison to parallel sections in both manuscripts and the final version, as shown in transcriptions of these passages from the sketches along with accompanying images of the original pages. For each of these sections, I attempt to suggest the order in which Beethoven made his revisions, and I discuss their formal, thematic and harmonic implications. As a whole, these revisions reveal Beethoven’s concern for economical treatment of thematic material, especially motives from theme 1a, and a concern for playing upon the harmonic and formal expectations of his audience. The voicing of theme 2a in the exposition and recapitulation, and the voicing and texture of theme 1a in the development, the false and authentic recapitulations and the coda are analyzed in terms of momentum, sectional balance, texture, and dramatic tension. I suggest that further study of these sketches and related primary source material might help to revise our notion of Beethoven’s late style.

Supergravity duals to five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories

Gregory, Carolina Matté January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis we study gauge/gravity duals in the 5d/6d AdS/CFT correspondence. We start with field theories defined on squashed five-spheres with SU(3) × U(1) symmetry. These five-sphere backgrounds are continuously connected to the round sphere. We find a one-parameter family of 3/4 BPS deformations and a two-parameter family of (generically) 1/4 BPS deformations. The gravity duals are constructed in Euclidean Romans F(4) gauged supergravity in six dimensions, and uplift to massive type IIA supergravity. We holographically renormalize the Romans theory, and use our general result to compute the renormalized on-shell actions for the solutions. The results agree perfectly with the large N limit of the dual gauge theory partition function, which we compute using large N matrix model techniques. In addition we compute BPS Wilson loops in these backgrounds, both in supergravity and in the large N matrix model, again finding precise agreement. We conjecture a general formula for the partition function on any five-sphere background, which for fixed gauge theory depends only on a certain supersymmetric Killing vector. We then proceed to study Euclidean Romans supergravity in six dimensions with a non-trivial Abelian R-symmetry gauge field. We show that supersymmetric solutions are in one-to-one correspondence with solutions to a set of differential constraints on an SU(2) structure. As an application of our results we (i) show that this structure reduces at a conformal boundary to the five-dimensional rigid supersymmetric geometry previously studied, (ii) find a general expression for the holographic dual of the VEV of a BPS Wilson loop, matching an exact field theory computation, (iii) construct holographic duals to squashed Sasaki-Einstein backgrounds, again matching to a field theory computation, and (iv) find new analytic solutions to the squashed five-sphere background. We also analyse the classification of gravity duals with zero B-field.

Benjumea, Natalia Londoño January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this investigation was to develop a plan of actions for teaching and/or improving left hand positioning of beginner violin students. The goal was to have a teaching alternative that could help solving musculoskeletal tension, derived from inadequate positioning of fingers, and hand. An experimental study was conducted with six students from the Conservatory of Music and undergraduates of the University of Caldas, Colombia. The investigation was based on four topics: (1) analysis of the initial position of hand, fingers and left arm; (2) teaching of the proposed alternative motor and movement patterns; (3) comparison of the left hand before and after the action plan; and (4) evaluation of the action plan. For data collection during this study, video recording were done before and after the actions. This study was based on the writings of Paul Rolland (1911-1981), Ivan Galamian (1903-1981), Carl Flesch (1873- 1944), Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) among others.

Pilates and String Musicians: An Exploration of the Issues Addressed by the Pilates Method, an Illustrated Guide to Adapted Exercises, and a Pilates Course for University String Players

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: String players have been identified as the most affected group of instrumentalists suffering from musculoskeletal disorders, and most of the problems are related to posture. The high prevalence of injuries among string players suggests that there is room in the music curriculum for a program tailored to this population and that can provide both immediate and long-term solutions. Pilates is a mind-body conditioning method of exercises and a philosophy that shares many similarities with string playing technique and performance, which suggests that its practice can be beneficial to improve not only the posture of string players but also various other areas. Studies about Pilates as a treatment show the varied areas in which Pilates can help, which are all of interest to instrumentalists. However, the application of Pilates into the music curriculum as a way to help string players improve awareness and reduce injuries has not yet been fully explored. This document addresses the similarities between Pilates and string playing, identifies postural tendencies of string players, and demonstrates how specific Pilates exercises can help counteract asymmetries, restore balance, and reduce the number of musculoskeletal injuries of string players. All anatomical drawings included in this document were adapted from other sources, as cited, or originally drawn by the author. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Music 2017

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 14170033 bytes, checksum: 8f83020a02e2f511fa1d031e7b1d8833 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-03-24 / In the universe of theorists who reflect on the reader's formation in the school, it is common sense the understanding that a reader does not form in a single instant nor by the singular action of a given theory. On the contrary, the reader is always a process in formation that occurs through the integrated action of various theoretical segments that are experienced in the classroom. Within the range of theoretical-methodological procedures that are thought as tools to aid the formation of the reader, we use the French Speech Discourse Analysis which, given its interdisciplinary character, is allied to other areas of knowledge. In this sense, authors like Pêcheux (1997, 2008, 2009), Foucault (1995, 2007, 2008), Orlandi (2006, 2010, 2012), Lerner (2002), Chartier (2002) and Martins (AD), as a reading methodology, could help in the formation of the reader. As for the specific objectives, we have to: a) Evaluate the Reading proposal applied by the teacher to understand the theoretical-methodological particularities of the discursive reading mediation; B) Analyze the result of the discursive reading mediation, from the confrontation between the initial and final questionnaires, to observe the effects of the AD proposal on students' reading gestures .; C) To understand how the classroom, with its dynamics and hierarchical organization, acts in the process of docilization of the subject-student and in the constitution of the governability of the teacher; D) Understand how power relations, and real wills interfere with teacher and student reading gestures. In order to carry out the research, we conducted a discursive mediation of reading with students from the ninth grade of elementary school, from a public school, taking as an object of analysis exemplary cordel literature. The corpus of the research is fragmented into two parts: cordel copies for the investigation of representations of man and woman from the Northeast in the speech of the cord; Transcription of the discursive mediation of reading lived in the classroom. The analysis of the cords was performed so that we could construct the didactic sequence for the discursive reading mediation. The results of this analysis show that the discourse of the cords we select builds a social representation that disparages Northeastern man and woman. Regarding the analysis of the discursive reading mediation, the results show that the DA has, in fact, a contribution to give to the practices of reading in the classroom. The contribution is that it enables the student to work with the discursive dimension of the language. In this work, he will consider, for the construction of reading, the socio-ideological interferences of saying that it is always accompanied by non-sayings that act on the said, sliding the meaning; You will realize that under the evidence of given meaning there are other possible meanings. In addition, by experiencing a discursive reading, the student can see the language in its political dimension, that is, language as a social construct based on real wills that are structured by the action of power.
