Behavior, comfort, and energy consumption in student residence halls

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / New residence halls differ from their predecessors because of sophisticated systems, concern for energy efficiency, and attention to student satisfaction. Nevertheless, older facilities represent the bulk of housing stock on many campuses. A literature review revealed few recent studies related to student housing. This thesis questions how residence hall age influences occupant perceptions and actions related to comfort and energy consumption. The study took place in two residence halls, built in 1963 and 2006, and entailed an occupant survey of 103 residents as well as the collection of thermal and utility data. Survey results did not show a significant difference in occupant behaviors between the older and newer buildings. Thermal measurements in both buildings fell inside and outside the ASHRAE Comfort Zone, which supported occupant perceptions. Findings indicate a lack of student awareness of energy conservation strategies. Portland Student Services, Inc. : the establishment of student-run housing in Portland, Oregon, 1969-1971

Portland student Services, Inc. (PSS), a non-profit student housing corporation, was created under circumstances that were especially arduous. Although thousands of students attending Portland State University in the late 1960s needed housing, state law prohibited the university from providing residential facilities . Many students lived in dilapidated apartment buildings in downtown Portland and faced dislocation from urban renewal programs initiated by the Portland Development Commission. Activists who set out to establish student-run housing also faced hostility from policymakers who resented student-led initiatives in politics and university governance. However, these dedicated student activists aligned with members of the Portland business community and overcame formidable obstacles in establishing permanent student-run housing. In the process, PSS had to contend with difficult political, socio-cultural, and environmental issues. The present study focuses on four major themes: 1) the character of the student housing problem and related legal issues; 2) creation of Portland Student Services; 3) the early operation of PSS; 4) the struggle over construction of off-campus housing.

Studentification in China : changing geographies of Haidian District, Beijing

Processes of studentification encompass socio-economic, cultural and physical changes which are tied to seasonal population movements of university students. To date, most empirical investigations of studentification have tended to take place in Anglophone contexts. This thesis extends the lens of study to China, and shows the salience of the concept for understanding urban transformations which have unfolded since the introduction of a new state policy in 1999 for the expansion of higher education. Using the case study of Haidian District (Beijing), and focussing on Peking University students, the thesis makes original contributions to academic knowledge. First, it argued that the concept of studentification can be transposed to the Chinese context, and that social, cultural, economic and physical signifiers of studentification are evident in Beijing. Second, four main geographies of studentification are revealed, which concur with Smith and Hubbard s (2014) discussion of the co-existence of diverse geographies of studentification in the UK. These include: on-campus, university-managed dormitories (Yanyuan and Shaoyuan by Peking University); off-campus, university-managed dormitories (Wanliu, Changchunyuan/Changchunxinyuan, and Global Village); off-campus, Housing in Multiple Occupation (Haidianlu), and; off-campus, Purpose-built student accommodation (Wudaokou). By contrast to the UK, it is shown that all geographies of studentification are gated . Yet, differential residential and socio-cultural experiences are highlighted, in part, influenced by state regulations for Chinese students to reside within university-managed dormitories, or acquire permission to live off-campus; contrary to less-regulated accommodation patterns of International students. This division marks a conceptual difference between studentification in China and UK, with international students more aligned to stereotypical cultural/lifestyle traits of UK students (e.g. noise, partying), as opposed to Chinese counterparts residing in regulated (study-oriented) spaces on-campus. The thesis presents a redefined conceptualisation of studentification for pining down the diverse geographies of student housing in Beijing, to meet the differential demands of Chinese and international students in an expanded system of higher education.

In the last decade we have witnessed the strengthening of an international network of higher education all over the world. The need to educate and develop our contemporary society is a machine in continuous work and progress. Being a student is a condition that makes individuals, enriches culture and often crosses boundaries. Students are a necessary piece in the capitalist economy, which makes them a valuable and essential resource in order to sustain its markets. Therefore, countries and institutions compete to hold more and more students within their society but what are the consequences of the internationalisation of higher education (and its market(s) that is taking place on a global scale? The globalisation and internationalisation of education promote a migration of students always on the rise. In some cities such as Umeå, it implies consequent urban growth, the need to develop facilities, services and accommodations. Such patterns of immigration make students actors in the real estate market of the country they move to but they do not always find adequate conditions for their integration. The current economic crisis has debilitated many markets including that of real estate, and in that context, the thesis explores alternative ways of approaching affordable accommodation for students, as well as a different understanding of urban planning that aims at enabling diverse coexistences of students and other inhabitants and the progressive transformation and hybridisation of otherwise very homogenous areas of the city.

Current status of wellness residence halls

Universities are challenged by the goal of providing opportunities for student development in residence halls. One popular approach is based on wellness and, to date, no formal assessment of this approach had been completed.This study assessed the current status of wellness residence halls (WRHs) to summarize trends. A self-designed questionnaire was sent to residence life departments who were identified as having WRHs. The survey focused on program size, budget size/source, programming model, and staffing. Participants were asked to indicate departments which supported WRHs, what made WRHs unique, the relative success of their WRHs and what inhibited or contributed to that success.This instrument collected useful demographic data related to WRH programs; however, there were no discernible patterns indicative of a homogenous WRH movement (as special interest halls) taking place in this country. A hedonic model for off-campus student housing : the value of location, location, location / Title on signature form: Hedonic model for off campus student housing

This study presents a hedonic model for off-campus student housing, using a semi-logarithmic model, with the natural log of unit rent as the dependent variable. Implicit values for select structural and locational characteristics were estimated, with a special emphasis on the variable of proximity to campus. Variable data for off-campus student housing in six university markets was collected. The results indicate a nonlinear relationship between rent and distance from the academic center of campus. Within one mile of campus, there is a significant premium for proximity, but between one and four miles from campus, the marginal value levels off before decreasing again beyond the four mile mark. The premium for being within one mile of campus ranged from 16.3% to 17%, and the discount for being outside four miles from campus equaled 13%. Other noteworthy characteristics and coefficients include the marginal value of an additional bedroom with a positive coefficient of roughly 21% and the inclusion of internet and cable with a premium of 12.4% to 15%. / Department of Family and Consumer Sciences
