Perceptions of personal safety on university campuses

Waters, Joanna January 2006 (has links)
Recent research in the United Kingdom has indicated that many students experience high levels of fear of crime and victimisation on university campuses. Furthermore, research has recognised that positive feelings of safety can be engendered through changes to the physical environment of the campus. However, existing campus safety research focuses predominantly on student vulnerability and relies typically on quantitative methodologies.

VI – IX klasių mokinių saugumo mokykloje ir patiriamo nerimo ryšys / The relationship between school safety and shool anxiety among 6 th and 9 th class students

Alaunis, Ramūnas 25 February 2010 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / School safetly is one of the major problems in Lithuania and whole world as well. This problem prevails everywhere, in the shools and outside their borders. The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between school safety and shool anxiety among 6 th and 9 th class students. Drug dealing or alcohol outlets anywhere near a school increase the likelihood of substance abuse-fueled antisocial behavior, either by students or against students. Children who feel safe are both psychologically and physiologically more receptive to learning. Material and methods. The date of the anonymous survey OFM 590, sixth, seventh, eighth and ningth - grade students (aged 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 tears respectively) from six secondary shools of Kaunas, conducted in the spring of 2009, were analyzed. The studentas completed the school safetly questionnaire, school bullying test that included self-report being bullied by others, and school anxiety test. The response rate was 90 %. Results. The statistic date analysis shows that 9,2 % boys and 5,8 % girls doesn‘t feel safe at shool. Most not safetly places for girls at shool are: shool yard (44,6 %), school corridors, (42,3%), breake time (40,1 %). Most not safetly places for boys at school are: break time (32,5 %), school yard (31,7 proc.), school corridors (31,6 proc.), answearing in class (24,8 proc.), at school parties (22,0 %.), canteen (18,9 %). Conclussion. The reasearch doesn‘t indicate relationship between safetly of school... [to full text]

An exploratory study on students' safety at the Universities of Limpopo and Venda

Lekganyane, John Kgatla January 2020 (has links)
Thesis (M.A. (Criminology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2020 / Campus safety is an important part of a student’s overall university experience. However, safety and security are an issue that institutions of higher learning have to deal with and address within their campuses. The focus of this study was to explore students’ safety at the Universities of Limpopo (UL) and Venda (UNIVEN). This study adopted an exploratory triangulation approach. A triangulation design was implemented to allow the researcher the opportunity to collect qualitative and quantitative data and thereafter, integrate the results in the interpretation stage. For triangulation purposes, data was collected using interviews and a self-administered questionnaire. For the qualitative phase of the research (phase I), twenty face to face interviews were conducted and for the quantitative phase (phase II), eight hundred and nineteen respondents responded to the questionnaire. This study employed Routine Activities Theory (RAT) to discuss the findings. Some of the findings were that the majority of female students who reside off-campus were fearful of being victimised. More female students than males were more concerned of sexual harassment and rape. These criminal incidents were statistically significant. The study further reveals that a lack of sufficient lighting, alcohol and illicit drugs, campus camera surveillance, crime reporting, and the visibility of emergency phones are some of the contributing factors associated with students victimisations. There are no visible police patrolling around the campuses of UL and UNIVEN. The majority of the students do not report their victimisation to the police or campus authorities. Furthermore, this study reveals that there is no relationship between gender and the perception of safety. However, age and level of study have a relationship to the perception of safety and were statistically significant. Based on these findings, crime awareness campaigns, visibility of police patrolling around the campus, and the police should work closely with the University authority.

Vadaszi, Tommie, Carlsson, Simon January 2022 (has links)

Occupational blood and body fluid exposure incidents amongst undergraduate medical students over a period of 5 years

Essop, Ziyaad Hoosain 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMed (Occupational Medicine))--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / Introduction Exposure incidents involving blood and body fluids represent a major hazard for medical undergraduates. Every medical teaching university experiences the problem of undergraduate medical students sustaining such incidents. Although Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is readily available and accessible to medical undergraduates following an incident, continuity and quality of care extends beyond the provision of PEP. This includes follow up consultations after receiving PEP according to protocol. Study Design This study was performed at the Tygerberg Campus of Stellenbosch University in Cape Town, South Africa to assess compliance with follow up consultations following an exposure incident. The study base consisted of all the medical undergraduates who reported an exposure incident at the Campus Health clinic. Cases were defined as medical undergraduate students of Stellenbosch University who had reported an exposure incident between January 2007 and December 2011. They were identified using the clinic database and records. Influential factors associated with the exposure incident, including compliance regarding follow up consultations were obtained from standardised reporting forms and medical records. The data was analysed in 2 sections, a cross sectional component (descriptive and analytical) and a retrospective cohort component. Two student cohorts were retrospectively followed from the beginning of their 3rd year to the end of their medical curriculum (6th year). Results There were 280 exposure incidents reported in the study period, of which 174 were low risk and were 106 high risk incidents for which PEP was prescribed (37.86% used PEP). For those who had high risk exposures, 90.57% (n=96) attended the 6-week follow up consultation, 48.11% (n=51) attended the 3 month visit and 34.91% (n=37) attended the 6 month follow up visit. There was an increase in the number of exposure incidents from 2010 (n=43) to 2011 (n=76). Internal medicine accounted for the most number of incidents (n=68), followed by Surgery (n=51), Obstetrics and Gynaecology (n=44), and Paediatrics (n=42). Drawing blood was the most common reported activity associated with exposures. Of notable importance was recapping, disposing of needles and insertion of blood into sample tubes. These activities accounted for 63 of the 280 exposure incidents. The 4th year students were the least at risk for exposure incidents compared to 3rd, 5th, 6th years. The annual average cumulative risk of having an exposure incident was found to be 5.7% (95%CI=4%-8%) and 6.8% (95%CI=5%-9%) amongst the 2 student cohorts over the duration of 4 years (clinical exposure time). Recommendations There is an urgent need for the number of exposure incidents to be reduced, e.g. needle recapping and disposal, and insertion of blood in sample tubes cause numerous preventable incidents. Various other strategies can be implemented in order to reduce the number of incidents across all undergraduate years of study. It is envisaged that by reducing the number of exposure incidents, there will be a subsequent decrease in the number of individuals requiring PEP. The importance of ensuring compliance with regard to follow up consultations needs to be emphasized. Factors that lead to noncompliance need to be investigated in a separate study.
