Latino Voters and U.S. Presidential Elections| A Demographic and Spatial Analysis of a Growing Ethnic Group's Political Power

Medina Cordero, Marina Del C. 18 July 2014 (has links)

In the United States the growing Latino population is often referred to as the "sleeping giant" of electoral politics due to the group's significant size. After the 2012 Presidential elections some argued that the 'sleeping giant' had finally awakened. This work analyzed the validity of this claim by looking at national Latino electoral participation from the 1990's to the present, concentrating on measures of electoral participation and influence of Latino voters. Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the ANES Survey at the national level, this work then focused on two states, Arizona and Nevada, to assess the changing influence of Latinos and Latino voters on state elections. The findings of this work establish that the electoral power of Hispanics in presidential elections has been overstated and overestimated. It additionally shows that in the future the influence and political power of this ethnic group will register a significant growth, which might cause substantial electoral and political shifts favoring the Democratic Party if current trends continue. Although, at the same time this projected political growth is greatly dependant on an increase of Hispanic voter registration in the future.

Frequent droughts are common and extreme precipitation is a normal weather pattern for the Navajo country and has been for almost 6000 years. The Navajo do not abandon the often that drought stricken areas demonstrating their ability adapt to extreme weather conditions. For almost 300 years, the Navajo, while in a state of constant warfare with many different surrounding peoples, continued to develop and grow as a tribe, while living off of livestock, farming and hunting. Currently open for public review and comment is a new proposed Navajo Rangeland Improvement Act of 2014. It is the people, the tribal citizen’s needs that need administration.

Abrindo a "caixa preta" do território : um estudo sociológico sobre a produção de relatórios técnicos de identificação de territórios quilombolas no Rio Grande do Sul

Leitão, Leonardo Rafael Santos January 2006 (has links)
The present dissertation has as subject the process of agrarian regularization of territories of remaining communities of quilombos. An Integrated Phylogeographic Analysis of the Bantu Migration

Ford, Colby Tyler 10 May 2018 (has links)

"Bantu" is a term used to describe lineages of people in around 600 different ethnic groups on the African continent ranging from modern-day Cameroon to South Africa. The migration of the Bantu people, which occurred around 3,000 years ago, was influential in spreading culture, language, and genetic traits and helped to shape human diversity on the continent. Research in the 1970s was completed to geographically divide the Bantu languages into 16 zones now known as "Guthrie zones" (Guthrie, 1971).

Researchers have postulated the migratory pattern of the Bantu people by examining cultural information, linguistic traits, or small genetic datasets. These studies offer differing results due to variations in the data type used. Here, an assessment of the Bantu migration is made using a large dataset of combined cultural data and genetic (Y-chromosomal and mitochondrial) data.

One working hypothesis is that the Bantu expansion can be characterized by a primary split in lineages, which occurred early on and prior to the population spreading south through what is now called the Congolese forest (i.e. "early split"). A competing hypothesis is that the split occurred south of the forest (i.e. "late split").

Using the comprehensive dataset, a phylogenetic tree was developed on which to reconstruct the relationships of the Bantu lineages. With an understanding of these lineages in hand, the changes between Guthrie zones were traced geospatially.

Evidence supporting the "early split" hypothesis was found, however, evidence for several complex and convoluted paths across the continent were also shown. These findings were then analyzed using dimensionality reduction and machine learning techniques to further understand the confidence of the model.

Politics by other means: Rhizomes of power in Argentina's social movements

Monteagudo, Graciela 01 January 2011 (has links)
The focus of my research has been the reverberations of the 2001 Argentine economic crisis, as they affected and were responded to by women in social movements. This dissertation contributes to studies of globalization by highlighting the unintended consequences of neoliberalism in Argentina in the form of the collective empowerment of women in egalitarian social movements. The negative consequences of neoliberalism are well known, but I found that these policies produced more than misery. They also helped to stimulate a new kind of politics—a set of autonomous movements aimed at democratizing society as well as the state. In response to rapidly deteriorating living conditions, contemporary Argentine social movements organized their constituencies in what I have defined as the field of politics by other means. In the context of failed governmental programs and discourse designed to create docile, mobile subjects (governmentality), egalitarian social movements engaged in the creation of movements whose democratic structures contrasted with the dispossessing nature of the neoliberal global power they confronted. In Argentina, this new political culture and methodology fostered, through street theater and pageants, ‘other means’ of making politics, including a concern for internal gender democracy in what has been called the “solidarity economy.” My research suggests that struggles against gender inequities have a synergistic relationship to democratic political structures. I found that receptivity to feminist discourses and opportunities for women's participation were greater in anti-hierarchical opposition movements than in those with a more traditional leftist orientation. In these autonomous movements, women were able to challenge gender inequities, democratizing both the movements and their family relationships. Their struggle for democracy and freedom contrasts with the role of neoliberal policies and practices responsible for the weakening of democratic institutions in Argentina. In this way, my research not only broadens understanding of Argentina's crisis and recovery, but it raises questions about the implications of the present worldwide economic and social crisis on struggles to transform gender relations.
