Geometric reasoning in an active-engagement upper-division E&M classroomCerny, Leonard Thomas 21 August 2012 (has links)
A combination of theoretical perspectives is used to create a rich description of student reasoning when facing a highly-geometric electricity and magnetism problem in an upper-division active-engagement physics classroom at Oregon State University. Geometric reasoning as students encounter problem situations ranging from familiar to novel is described using van Zee and Manogue's (2010) ethnography of communication. Bing's (2008) epistemic framing model is used to illuminate how students are framing what they are doing and whether or not they see the problem as geometric. Kuo, Hull, Gupta, and Elby's (2010) blending model and Krutetskii's (1976) model of harmonic reasoning are used to illuminate ways students show problem-solving expertise. Sayer and Wittmann's (2008) model is used to show how resource plasticity impacts students' geometric reasoning and the degree to which students accept incorrect results. / Graduation date: 2013

An exploratory study of how creativity in adult learners can be facilitated in higher education in Gauteng ProvenceWilmot, Anais 12 1900 (has links)
The research describes how creativity in higher education can be introduced as a concept that could enhance the creative thinking and application of adult learners enrolled in the Advertising Management Diploma. A number of different routes were attempted in order to answer the research question „can creativity be taught? ‟ Cord and Clement (2010) stated that adult learners should be allowed to practice their skills and prior knowledge, and that the learning material should promote generic workplace skills. The research discovered that the learning material for the Advertising Management diploma does little to enhance or even cater for imagination and creative application. It is vital for accurate application to take place, as this will enhance creativity.
The problem formation is centered on the lack of sufficient skills in using one‟s imagination to generate creative ideas. This research study included five research activities that employed a semi-structured interview that involved sessions spanning over a period of six months, aligned to the course material‟s learning outcomes, and creative application of such acquired knowledge. It was established that, in order to further the creative application of young adults, it is important that they are able to link theory to practical and so be able to create concrete examples of what they are capable of doing. / ABET and Youth Development / M. The impact of medium of instruction on the learning of computer applications technology in tertiary educationEls, Lorraine 08 1900 (has links)
Submitted in compliance with the requirements for the Master’s Degree in Technology: Language Practice, Department of Media, Language and Communication, Durban University of Technology. Durban, South Africa, 2015. / This study investigated the impact of medium of instruction (MOI) on the learning of computer technology, and took place in two second-language contexts where this was being taught. The first context was that of Computer Applications Technology (CAT) lectures given to isiZulu-speaking students, mainly female, in KwaZulu-Natal. The second context was that of teaching Instructional Technology (IT) to Arabic speaking students in the Middle East. The goal of this research was to understand how students overcame any language barriers which they might face in the teaching and learning of computer technology through the medium of English. It was hoped that the insights gained might be used to support English second language (ESL) learners in acquiring the language skills necessary for effective learning of computer technology.
The research approach used was action research for both the groups, using the data collected to construct two case studies, as local customs resulted in differences in both course delivery and measures to assist ESL learners to gain fluency in the MOI. Data were collected in two case studies, comprising notes of personal reflections, field notes, researcher-developed questionnaires and comparisons of translated assessments to second language learners. The finding from two groups could then be compared and contrasted with each other to see which language barriers experienced in learning computer technology were common to both ESL groups and which were context-specific, as well as which context-specific factors might be involved. The study of different cultural groups in the setting of a different continent provided the opportunity to triangulate the data, and thus achieve more reliability and validity than would be achieved with one cultural group in a common context.
This study discusses the findings of the above-mentioned investigation in two main areas: how the MOI affected the academic results obtained by students and how it impacted on their learning capacity. The findings confirm the fact that, the earlier children attend an English medium school, the easier it is for them to achieve better results, and therefore there is less need for translation or interpretation at tertiary level. Further research is required to determine what Higher Education institutions could do to develop second language learning competences so as to facilitate the learning of technical subjects such as computer technology.

The evaluation of the outcome of a thinking skills programme for middle management in a financial services industry organisationHermanson, Christina Magdalena 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The globalisation of business is probably the most important topic
of discussion in business around the world. Globalisation impacts on
business processes, and changes in the processes of economic and
political liberalisation signify a radical shift in thinking about how
the world works and how it should be organised. The process of
change consequently means having to deal with increasing
complexity. It is the complexity of change that prompts the urgency
to improve the thinking of management in an organisation. As
adult learners, managers need different competencies to operate; in
addition their thinking skills need to be developed, as they are the
key drivers in an organisation going through transformation.
In a needs' assessment in a financial services organisation
operating in the global environment, a need for training of middle
managers to help them improve their thinking skills in order to
become more effective thinkers was determined. The need to train
adults to develop cognitive skills prompted a specific thinking skills
intervention and the facilitation thereof. A Thinking Skills
Programme aimed at teaching thinking dispositions and thinking
skills was implemented as a programme to teach the managers to
become effective thinkers. The study was approached from a
programme evaluative perspective. The purpose of the programme
was an improvement-orientated evaluation and was designed to
evaluate the outcomes of the programme.
Qualitative data was collected through a pre- assessment and postassessment
process. Open-ended questionnaires as well as other qualitative methods were used in the assessment to capture the
data. The data analysis was done through content analysis. In the
process of determining the patterns and processes in the preassessment,
observations, semi-structured interviews, field notes
and post-assessment, the researcher looked for themes or
interconnections that emerged in the units, sub-categories and
categories. The sub-categories that emerged were derived from the
frequency of appearance in the answers of the participants in the
questionnaires.
The post-assessment feedback categories indicated that a shift in
effective thinking had taken place in the participants. The most
significant difference in their thinking was the awareness of their
thinking.
They reflected on their thinking while solving problems, which is
evidence of effective thinking. They used the thinking tools to help
them solve problems. The intervention influenced the participants
to be more creative in solving problems, which was not evident in
the pre-assessment.
The evaluation of the outcome of the programme through the
application of a Thinking Skills Programme was successful. This was
demonstrated by the fact that in the measurement of the outcome
of the programme it was evident that the middle managers had
become more aware of their thinking and that they applied the
thinking dispositions and thinking tools in their daily managerial
activities. They had become more effective thinkers.
As volwasse leerders benodig bestuurders
benader vanuit 'n programevaluasie-perspektief.
geword.

Information technology (IT) with a human face : a collaborative research project to improve higher nutrition training in Southern AfricaMarais, Debbie 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Interdisciplinary Health Sciences. Human Nutrition))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / Various enabling factors are required to incorporate technology in teaching and learning,
moving towards a more learner-centred approach. Although efforts are being made to
address the situation, the effective incorporation of ICT is not yet the norm in African
higher education institutions (HEI). Data is available regarding the situation in African
HEI, but very little is known about the situation of nutrition training.
This research programme was divided into three phases. Phase I, assessment of the
current use, awareness, attitudes and practices of ICT in nutrition training followed a
descriptive, cross-sectional approach. A convenience sample of six HEI in South Africa,
Malawi, Zambia, Swaziland and Zimbabwe was included. Data were collected from
students (N = 591) and lecturing staff (N = 29) in nutrition-related courses using a
questionnaire on ICT awareness, attitude and practices. Phase II, development and
validation of a purpose-designed e-learning nutrition module followed a descriptive,
cross-sectional approach. An e-learning module on Nutrition and HIV/AIDS with eleven
sub-modules was developed, using an e-learning platform taking the specific constraints
of developing countries into account. It was validated by expert reviewers (N = 27) for
content validity and students (N = 175) for face validity. Phase III, to determine the
impact of the module on cognitive knowledge followed an experimental before-after
approach and used a set of twenty True/False questions for eight of the sub-modules (N
= 173).
Although there is widespread accessibility to computers, less so to the internet, in
nutrition-related courses at Southern African HEI, respondents still felt that more
computers should be made available. Computers are not fast enough and lack of
finances is the main barrier to home and internet access. Students rate their ICT skills
as average to good. Institutional ICT policies and support seem to be lacking, but their
attitude to ICT is positive and supportive. Respondents felt that ICT could add a new
dimension to nutrition training and are in favour of application of ICT in different modes.
Most indicate that the current use of ICT in nutrition training is inadequate. The Nutrition
in HIV/AIDS module was validated and found to be useful as an educational tool, being
user-friendly, interactive and self-paced. The majority of students reported that their ICT
skills were sufficient to complete the e-learning activity. Although generally rated as at
least as effective, or more effective than conventional lectures, clearly this mode of elearning should not replace traditional teaching. The content was found to be
comprehensive and evidence-based. The depth of the content was sufficient, the level
correct for undergraduates and the material relevant to the Southern African context.
The interactivity was deemed important, helpful and effective. Most students indicated
that they would recommend the Nutrition in HIV/AIDS module to other students, that
they enjoyed the presentation and learnt something new. There was an improvement in
knowledge scores and/or the number of questions being answered correctly in all but
one sub-module. The results confirm previous studies indicating that well-designed elearning
modules have the potential to increase the performance of students.

Thesis (MPhil (Curriculum Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
Hierdie
soort assessering wat bekend staan as assessering-vir-leer behoort
'n Kwalitatiewe
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Transformational change in teaching systems worldwide is characterised by a
new approach regarding assessment. This type of assessment, known as
assessment for learning, should be continuous, diagnostic and developmental
by nature. This is assessment that does not only focus in a final judgement,
but which aims to promote learning and development by means of
assessment in learners. Assessment-for-learning therefore forms an integral
part of the teaching and learning process and does not only happen at the
end of the learning process.
This research is embedded in the following research question: To which
extent is assessment-for-learning used in the Economic and Management
Sciences learning area in the Intermediate Phase to guide and support learner
progress? The extent to which the principles for assessment-for-learning are
integrated in the teaching practice of teachers to support Intermediate Phase
learners in the learning area Economic and Management sciences (EMS) in a
rural school was therefore researched. A qualitative research design within
the interpretative research paradigm was used to generate data in order to
answer the research question. Teachers and learners were used as
respondents in the study.
The research results showed that teachers are still caught up in practices of
assessment of learning which focus on the collection of marks rather than on
the use of assessment information in order to promote further learning in
learners. Where there are signs that assessment for learning indeed takes
place in the practice of teaching and learning by teachers, it is incidental and
not intentional. Based on the results, it can be said that, with the necessary
support, teachers may be able to integrate principles for assessment for
learning into their classroom practice so as to promote more effective teaching
and learning in the school concerned.
