Genetic and environmental influences on learning Chinese language and literacy skills

Chow, Wing Yin January 2010 (has links)
This thesis investigated the etiology of individual differences in Chinese language and literacy skills with a two-wave longitudinal design using a sample of 312 Chinese twin pairs aged 3 to 11 in Hong Kong. Children were individually given tasks of Chinese word reading, receptive vocabulary, phonological memory, tone awareness, syllable and rhyme awareness, rapid automatized naming, morphological awareness, and orthographic skills, as well as nonverbal reasoning and audiometric screening tests. They were tested again on the same tasks, except nonverbal reasoning, one year after the initial testing. Children’s saliva was collected to perform SNP testing for zygosity determination. Also, their demographic information, home literacy environment profile, and motivation for learning text, were obtained from parent-rated questionnaires. Overall, there were four major findings on Chinese language and literacy abilities with the effects of age and nonverbal reasoning controlled for. First, genes and environments had differential influences on various skills, and there was a possibility of different etiology in language and reading development. Second, socioeconomic status and home literacy environment were plausible mediators but not moderators of general language and reading abilities. Third, the stability of various skills across a one-year time period was mainly mediated by genetic influences, but shared environmental factors also influenced syllable and rhyme awareness. Also, new genetic and environmental factors came into play at Time 2 for word reading, and results suggested new genetic influences and new shared environmental influences emerged at Time 2 for tone awareness and morphological awareness respectively. Fourth, both genes and environments contributed to parent-rated communicative ability and motivation for learning text. Furthermore, the link between word reading and parent-rated motivation was mediated by genetic processes. The universality of the genetic and environmental origins across languages and their specificity to Chinese, as well as the implications of these findings, were discussed.

The choice of topic related to cohesive elements benchmarks is justified by the need to develop studies that contribute to the improvement of writing method in the textual productions of the students. The study was conducted based on qualitative research method was characteristic of research-action, since the pedagogical mediation activities designed to contribute to overcoming the difficulties of the students as well as possible reflection of the researcher as their teaching practice. In the development of pedagogical practice, it was used as a recording instrument classes the field diary and analysis of the activities had applied as a parameter the theoretical basis proposed by Zabala (1998), which defends teaching attitudinal contents, conceptual, factual and procedural in teaching practice. The analyzes allowed to verify that there was significant assimilation of the content proposed by the students and the objectives have been met. However, there is the need to expand educational practice with teaching attitudinal and procedural contents, as well as expand the systematic work of the textual cohesion teaching / O objetivo geral desta pesquisa consistiu em investigar os pressupostos teóricos da Linguística Textual e sua relação com o ensino dos elementos de coesão textual referencial (lexicais e pronominais), com vistas à aplicação no contexto de sala de aula, em uma turma do 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental.

Salvador

Analýza českých mluvených projevů nerodilých mluvčích / An Analysis of Verbal Czech Language Usage by Non-native Speakers

Pémová, Petra January 2017 (has links)
(in English): The work in this diploma contains an analysis of speech accuracy and fluency of Russian speaking and English speaking students of Czech language, based on case studies. For these case studies two Russian speaking students and two English speaking students were chosen to take part. The results were compared to the results of one native Czech speaker. The accuracy and fluency analysis was carried out based on the language principles of Rod Ellis. Within the accuracy analysis, the number of error free clauses and the average number of mistakes per one hundred words were measured. Accuracy of speech is examined through concrete grammatical phenomena like the usage of reflexive particle se/si and the usage of the verb to be in the past tense. The work in this diploma also considers the ability of analysed speakers to switch between language codes and to distinguish features of formal and spoken Czech language (spoken language in informal situations). The fluency of speech is studied based on the speech rate of all analysed speakers by counting the number of syllables per one hundred words. Subsequently, the number of false starts, repetition of words or phrases, the frequency of usage of parasite words and hesitation sounds were also examined. One of the diploma hypothesis is the statement...
