Can the Uncanny Valley be bridged? : An evaluation of stylization and design for realistic human characters

Kraft, Benjamin January 2017 (has links)
This study investigated the Uncanny Valley and whether using stylization and design may mitigate the negative effects of it. A survey was carried out where respondents had to rate a series of images, which where edited to be stylized in progressively higher degrees, in appeal and realism. All levels of stylization saw small gradual decreases in realism, whilst values of appeal remained static until the three last images where it diminished. Possibly there may be a way of designing characters to have a limited degree of realism whilst not evoking the eeriness associated with the Uncanny Valley.

Être et existence sur les scènes théâtrales contemporaines françaises : Stanislas Nordey, Claude Régy, François Tanguy / Being and existence of French contemporary stages : Stanislas Nordey, Claude Régy, François Tanguy

Rajalu, Rachel 06 December 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation, at the crossroad of philosophy and theatre studies, is twofold. On one hand, the dissertation aims to point out how a study of theatre helps extend and renew problems of aesthetics concerning the ontological status of art. On the other hand, this work tries to suggest an interpretation of the aesthetic experience of theatrical stages. We are looking into in the experimental conditions of the stage and its effects on our existence, based on the analysis of the artistic approaches of Stanislas Nordey, Claude Régy and François Tanguy, along with a rising director, Simon Gauchet. Our methodological approach combines the contributions of the phenomenologies of perception (Merleau-Ponty) and of event (Claude Romano) with those of the Anglo-American pragmatism (John Dewey, Richard Shusterman, Stanley Cavell) as well as a pragmatism motivated by the Anglo-American tradition (Marielle Macé, Sandra Laugier). Theatre participates to individualization processes which can be interpreted as elements of stylization of our life. It also yields an ethical power by helping individuals to develop care skills. As such, it is possible to define theatre as an art of existence

Mitos, arquétipos e visão de mundo na obra em prosa de Mário de Sá-Carneiro / Miths, archetypes and vision of the world in Mário de Sá-Carneiro\'s work in prose

Eric Beuttenmuller 17 October 2014 (has links)
The fundamental point of this thesis is the corroboration that the myths and the archetypes of the works of Mário de Sá-Carneiro assist in the formation of his vision of the world. Myths and archetypes represent motifs, thematic elements that appear many times in universal Literature and can reveal a set of values in a metaphoric way. Each writer has his own mythology, and even the literary creation is made in a conscious way, these thematic elements appear in his work, even he doesn´t know that. Then, this thesis made a research of the main myths and archetypes that is relevant in the literary works of Mário de Sá-Carneiro, perceiving the ideological, ethical and aesthetic values that they represent, in order to show how they assist in his set of values. The main myths that were found are Eros e Thanatos, Salomé, the quest and the creation. The main archetypes found were symbolist noble that are named this way from the archetype found by Edmund Wilson, in his work Axel´s Castle and the femme fatale. These thematic elements reveal some author´s essential values, forging his vision of the world, which is characterized for some basic points. One of them, is the sentiment of dissatisfaction with the reality, and the artist tries to solve it with the creation of some superior and brilliant form of art. This feeling of dissatisfaction is also cause by the fact that the modern artist is not well adapted in his own world, because of that he escapes to the art (that in many cases leads to a kind of stylization of life), and to a form of heroic dandyism. All of this gives a tragic and magnificent tone to this individual´s existence, which is considered superior among the others. Another important point in Mário de Sá-Carneiro´s vision of the world is the idea that love can only be resolved by death. It is caused by a dichotomy in the vision of the woman that is considered as a femme fatale or a naïve bourgeois woman that hinders a mature and healthy relationship.

JINDROVÁ, Jana January 2016 (has links)
This diploma thesis is based on the bachelor thesis Chodské nářečí ve třech generacích. It expands on the topic of the "chod" dialect from the works of Jindřich Šimon Baar aswell as contemporary authors. The basis of this work is formed by a comparison of the current spoken form of the dialect with the dialect's version from the 1950s and comparison of the dialect stylization in Baar's books with todays stylization. The aim is to examine the evolution of the "chod" dialect's stylization and spoken form. This thesis is based on the hypothesis of a slowly disappearing dialect in all aspects and searches for evidence of this occurrence. Basis for the theoretical part are findings about Jindřich Šimon Baar, his life and his work. Furthermore the current knowledge about dialects with a focus on the southwestern dialect "chod". No less important is the part examining text stylization. The practical part is based on the language analysis of Baar's books partly written in a dialect in comparison with books of contemporary authors. And also comparison of audio recordings of the dialect with recordings from the archive of Jindřich Jindřich.
