Economic Feasibility of Producing Pasta in Kenya

Warui, George January 1900 (has links)
Master of Agribusiness / Department of Agricultural Economics / Tian Xia / Between the years 2008 and 2017, pasta imports in Kenya grew at a rate of 16.12%. This is from data obtained from Kenya National Bureau of Statistics. Growth is projected to continue and can be attributed to factors such as population growth which grew from 38 million to 50 million for that period of time. This population is projected to keep growing and double by the year 2050. GDP per capita grew 58% from US$ 916 to US$ 1,455 between the years 2008 to 2016. This has resulted to growth of middle-class families and increased their purchasing power. Changing lifestyles has led to increased number of dual-income families where both husband and wife work, creating food habits that call for fast and convenient foods. Without domestic production, Kenya imports all its pasta. With the increased demand, it might be the right time for import substitution. This research seeks to find out if it is economically feasible to commercially produce and market pasta in Kenya. The research begins by simulating investment in a small scale pasta production plant in Kenya, followed assessing costs and revenues expected in the seven-year life of the investment. It involves starting up the plant, producing, marketing, and distributing the resulting pasta goods. It is funded through a Kenyan Shilling (Ksh.) 12 million loan from a local bank, payable in seven years at a 14% interest rate. From costs and revenues projections, cash flows are determined. The project’s feasibility is determined by evaluating the cash flows using both Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) methods. Using the NPV method, the project has a positive NPV of Ksh.1,286,282.00. When using the IRR method it has an IRR of 45% which is above the cost of capital. It is concluded that the project is feasible. It is also noted that both semolina cost (main pasta production raw), and pasta sales price are important feasibility drivers. NPV’s sensitivity to both is therefore determined. From the analysis, the project remains feasible at all proposed pasta sales prices, as long as semolina cost does not exceed Ksh.56/Kilogram.

The morphology of human rod ERGs obtained by silent substitution stimulation

Maguire, John, Parry, Neil R.A., Kremers, Jan, Murray, I.J., McKeefry, Declan J. 13 January 2017 (has links)
Yes / Purpose To record transient ERGs from the lightadapted human retina using silent substitution stimuli which selectively reflect the activity of rod photoreceptors. We aim to describe the morphology of these waveforms and examine how they are affected by the use of less selective stimuli and by retinal pathology. Methods Rod-isolating stimuli with square-wave temporal profiles (250/250 ms onset/offset) were presented using a 4 primary LED ganzfeld stimulator. Experiment 1: ERGs were recorded using a rodisolating stimulus (63 ph Td, rod contrast, Crod = 0.25) from a group (n = 20) of normal trichromatic observers. Experiment 2: Rod ERGs were recorded from a group (n = 5) using a rodisolating stimulus (Crod = 0.25) which varied in retinal illuminance from 40 to 10,000 ph Td. Experiment 3: ERGs were elicited using 2 kinds of nonisolating stimuli; (1) broadband and (2) rod-isolating stimuli which contained varying degrees of L- and M-cone excitation. Experiment 4: Rod ERGs were recorded from two patient groups with rod monochromacy (n = 3) and CSNB (type 1; n = 2). Results The rod-isolated ERGs elicited from normal subjects had a waveform with a positive onset component followed by a negative offset. Response amplitude was maximal at retinal illuminances\100 ph Td and was virtually abolished at 400 ph Td. The use of non-selective stimuli altered the ERG waveform eliciting more photopic-like ERG responses. Rod ERGs recorded from rod monochromats had similar features to those recorded from normal trichromats, in contrast to those recorded from participants with CSNB which had an electronegative appearance. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that ERGs elicited by silent substitution stimuli can selectively reflect the operation of rod photoreceptors in the normal, light-adapted human retina. / Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) (KR1317/13-1) and Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) (01DN14009) provided financial support for JK.

Synthesis and a Mechanistic Study of Nucleophilic Substitution in Halo-arene Chromiumtricarbonyl Complexes

Sandilands, Linda 05 1900 (has links)

Arenechromiumtricarbonyl complexes have been known for many years and numerous studies of the chemistry of these molecules have been reported. The presence of the chromiumtricarbonyl unit changes the reactivity of the complexed arena, in most cases due to its strong inductive electron withdrawing effect. The resulting lowered electron density in the aromatic ring allows reactions to be carried out which would otherwise be extremely difficult if not impossible, notably nucleophilic substitution. When methoxide ion was reacted with optically pure methyl o-fluorobenzoatechromiumtricarconyl, racemization of approximately 50% was observed in the product. A brief study confirmed SN2 kinetics, but further investigation was warranted. Having eliminated the possibility of decomplexationrecornplexation, two other mechanisms were postulated -a partial decomplexation allowing the arene to roll over, or attack by methoxide at another ring position. In an effort to determine which mechanism was operating, the synthesis of a number of appropriately substituted halo-arenechromiumtricarbonyl complexes was attempted. The successful synthesis of methyl 2-chloro-5-methylbenzoatechromiumtricarbonyl wns achieved, albeit with some difficulty in in low yield, but the corresponding 2-chloro-3-methyl complex could not be made. In the case of the corresponding 2-fluoro compounds, the arenes themselves could not be made by a variety of synthetic routes, 80 synthesis of the complexes could not be attempted. The results of the reaction of methoxide ion with methyl 2-chloro-5-methylbenzoatechromiumtricarbonyl indicate that the reaction proceeds via the roll-over mechanism, although a definite conclusion cant be drawn at this time. A potentially useful synthesis of bis-(chromiumtricarbonyl)-benzo-phenones has also been developed.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

The Phenomenon of Substitution and Asperger's Syndrome a Phenomenological Analysis / The Phenomenon of Substitution and Asperger's Syndrome

Segal, Teresa 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis suggests that the alliance between contemporary Psychology and Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology provides a more complete analysis of the embodied experience of persons with Asperger's Syndrome (AS). This alliance would rely upon the first person experiences of those with AS in addition to the physiological analysis and observations provided by those in Contemporary Psychology. By examining the analysis provided by contemporary psychologists within in the framework of the philosophy of Merleau-Ponty, the 'whole' of the embodied experience of persons with AS will be revealed. The analysis of Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen, one of the foremost contemporary psychologists in the field of autism is examined. I will conclude that Baron-Cohen privileges interpersonal interaction while overlooking other types of interaction by an embodied being within the phenomenal world. First person accounts written by Temple Grandin, Ph.D. and Dawn Prince-Hughes, Ph.D., both persons with AS, are relied upon for the analysis of an alliance between the two disciplines. Critical to this examination is Merleau-Ponty' s Phenomenon of Substitution, the 'seat of illness', and the 'third term'. Also discussed will be issues of boundaries that serve to separate the neurotypical from those persons with AS. These boundaries serve to diminish the potential and accomplishments of those persons with AS while attempting to maintain the hierarchical supremacy of those who are neurotypical. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Essays on Development Economics: Issues in Macroeconomics and Population

Tandon, Ajay Jr. 31 July 1998 (has links)
This dissertation consists of three chapters on development economics. The first two chapters are in the area of international macroeconomics. The third chapter is in an area that is the intersection of macroeconomics and population economics. The first chapter studies currency substitution in an environment where agents' inflation tax evasive demand for foreign money is balanced by the concern for the possibility that the government may impose economy-wide capital controls under which foreign currency transactions are costly. We contrast implications of constant beliefs regarding capital controls with those obtained under endogenous beliefs. With endogenous beliefs, agents expect a greater likelihood of capital controls as economy-wide currency substitution rises. Our results show a persistent demand for foreign money under endogenous beliefs despite efforts by the government to reduce inflation. The second chapter is a theoretical study of currency substitution in an overlapping-generations economy. We focus on the role of beliefs in determining the relative demands for domestic and foreign money. Domestic money suffers from a lack of confidence leading agents to demand foreign money as an alternate store-of-value. We study equilibria in which the level of confidence in domestic money evolves as a function of expected future aggregate domestic money demand: agents increase their demand for domestic money only if aggregate economy-wide real domestic money demand is expected to rise. The third chapter is a study of intertemporal substitution and fertility dynamics. The demographic experience of Iran after the revolution poses an interesting puzzle. A brief increase in period fertility after the 1979 revolution interrupted a trend of decline that had started in the 1950s. The rise in fertility, however, appears to have lasted only a few years: in the late 1980s fertility decline resumed its course at an even faster pace. We present evidence that suggests that the changes in Iranian fertility since the revolution were in part a birth timing phenomenon. The revolution may well have been a transient economic shock which temporarily depressed the relative "price" of children and caused adjustment in fertility patterns which, at least in an ex post sense, is suggestive of intertemporal substitution. / Ph.
