The Development of Two Units for Basic Training and Resources for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages: "Developing a Successful Teaching Personality" and "Managing Classes of English Language Learners"

Crookston, Iva 21 May 2010 (has links)
A team of graduate students from Brigham Young University under the supervision of the main author, Dr. Henrichsen, collaborated on creating a book as well as a website, Basic Training and Resources for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (BTR-TESOL). The entire project consists of ten main sections with nearly fifty units addressing topics that novice teachers should know before teaching English to non-native speakers. The BTR-TESOL project answers the need for material for untrained novice teachers that will help them to be better prepared in a very minimalistic way to face the challenges and responsibilities that teaching of English as a second language (ESL) brings. This master's project describes the creation of two units of section three, "Fundamental Teaching Skills", titled "Developing a Successful Teaching Personality" and "Managing Classes of English Language Learners." The first unit, "Developing a Successful Teaching Personality", educates novice teachers about the importance of nine major characteristics of a good teaching personality that were compiled by the author of this unit after extensive research of teachers' and students' attitudes. Moreover, the unit explains how each characteristic contributes to the overall challenge of being a successful teacher. In the second unit, "Managing Classes of English Language Learners", novice teachers are introduced to basic classroom management issues, possible reasons behind students' behavior, and tips on how to solve common classroom management issues. Both units include a short introduction to the content, an opening scenario, a video segment related to the theme of each unit as well as reflection questions, objectives, explanatory text, and a section that directs readers to places they can go to learn more about the subject.

The Most Essential Leadership Responsibilities: Perceptions of Principals of Successful Middle Level Schools in Texas

Carpenter, Bebe B. 2010 May 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine what leadership responsibilities principals of successful middle level schools in Texas perceived as most essential to student achievement. The study was also intended to reveal how closely these principals? leadership responsibilities align with the literature. The Texas Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) data were analyzed from 2005 to 2008. From this data, middle school campuses with 500 or more students, a free and reduced lunch rate greater than 50%, and AEIS ratings of ?exemplary? three of four years were identified. Thirty-nine campuses met the criteria and 15 of the principals agreed to serve as the expert panel. Using a modified Delphi technique, panelists completed a 26-item questionnaire and an open-ended comments section. This comprised Round One of the study. Data were analyzed for mean, median, standard deviation, and inter-quartile range (IQR). Unique questionnaires were developed based on panelist responses from Round One. Panelists were to review their responses to questions falling outside of the IQR and were able to change or maintain their responses after reviewing the data. Panelists repeated this procedure reviewing all questions with responses outside the IQR for Round Three. The major findings of this study revealed many of the critical leadership responsibilities are supervisory and not instructional. The five leadership responsibilities (ties are denoted) perceived by panelists as most critical to student achievement were: (1) ethical behavior, (t2) collaborative processes, (t2) visibility, (t3) collective vision, (t3) high expectations, (t3) instructional supervision, (4) professional development, and (5) intellectual stimulation. Through all three rounds, ethical behavior was identified as the most critical leadership responsibility. The findings of this study may potentially impact hiring practices of middle level campus leaders as well as their certification programs and professional learning opportunities. It is recommended principal preparation programs require an ethics course, and school districts provide annual ethics training for leadership teams. Additional professional learning should include team and collaboration building. Finally, based on the literature, it was recommended a principal certification specifically for middle level leaders be offered and/or middle level course work be included in the principal certification program.

Successful Sexual Aging: A Feminist Gerontological Examination of Sexual Behavior and Health

Barmon, Christina 12 August 2016 (has links)
As gerontology has shifted from emphasizing the problems of aging to exploring how older adults can thrive, researchers have increased their attention on new issues including sexuality and aging. A sometimes explicit, but often implicit assumption in this research, is that sex is good for you—that it is an integral part of a full and healthy life or successful aging. Although successful aging is one of the most commonly cited theories in social gerontology (Alley et al. 2010), it has not gone without criticism (Martinson and Berridge 2014). Using an unrefined successful aging framework for sex research has the potential to promote aging and sexuality in narrow ways and privilege certain groups over others. This research examines the relationship between sexual activity and health from a feminist gerontological perspective. In particular, I explore differences in what counts as sex and how gender and social location influence the relationship between health and sexual activity. Using a nationally representative sample of community dwelling older adults (3005) from the first wave of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project, I find that older adults engage in a wide variety of sexual activity which differs by social location (e.g. gender, race, and class). Furthermore, gender differences in sexual behavior are not merely due to a lack of access to healthy partners for women. Much of the gender gap in sexual behavior can be explained by disparities in sexual interest and desire. In addition, using more inclusive definitions of sex, partnered sexual behavior is associated with health even after accounting for demographics and relationship factors. In conclusion, existing models of aging and sexuality, relying on successful aging or a correlation between continued sexual activity and health, may limit our understanding of the experiences of women and sexual minorities. A feminist gerontological approach provides a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between health and continued sexual activity.

A Comparative Analysis of Selected Characteristics of Foster Grandparents Assigned to Criterion Groups on the Bases of Tenure and Supervisor Evaluations

Helton, George B. 08 1900 (has links)
This study was concerned with determining whether those foster grandparents employed at Denton State School and seen as more or less successful in job performance could be differentiated on the basis of selected psychological and sociological characteristics. In summary, it may be said that the study was exploratory in terms of the population involved but borrowed its methods and variables for investigation from studies of similar purpose of groups participating in "helping relationships."

Negotiating towards success in international crises: the case of North Korea and Iran (minor case study)

Campbell, Ava 27 August 2010 (has links)
MA, School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand / This paper studies the North Korean Six-Party Talks This negotiation concerned the denuclearisation of North Korea. This is the overarching goal of the Six-Party Talks – to get North Korea to denuclearise. However, each party has their own personal objective that they would like to achieve. The paper discusses the negotiation process by looking at the strategies utilised by the members to achieve their outcomes, as well as the intervening variables (culture and environment) that affect the strategy and outcome of talks. However, the goal of this paper is to design a model based on the Six-Party Talks to simulate future negotiated outcomes. The paper does not purport that the Six-Party Talks is successful, as this cannot be claimed until the talks come to a close. What it does argue is that the talks have achieved a measure of success, proven by the achievement of two agreements and its continuance. Therefore, the paper believes that the Six-party negotiation is moving towards success. With that said, the paper examines the applicability of the model by discussing it with regards to the minor case study, Iran. This paper is distributed into six sections. Section One, is the Introduction, it situates the research problem. Section Two and Three, is Chapters One and Two respectively. Chapter obstacles to negotiating. Section Four and Five, is Chapters Three and Four respectively. Chapter Three is dedicated to the main case study the North Korean Six-Party Talks, it looks at the context in which the talks are occurring, as well as the delegates involved and their objectives for the negotiations. It then discusses the strategies used in the negotiation and then depicts the model. Chapter Four focuses on Iran, discussing the context of talks with Iran by the various concerned parties and following this is the discussion of the model with respect to Iranian talks. The Sixth and Final section, Section Six is the Conclusion which draws a close the discussion of the Six-Party Talks. One explores negotiations, from the definition of negotiation to the theories applied in negotiation. While, Chapter Two discusses negotiation strategy, by looking at the styles and tactics used in negotiations, as well as the influence of culture on negotiations and the that began in 2003 and are still ongoing.

The Operation Performances and Key Successful Factors of Japanese Telecommunication Operators in Third Generation Telecommunication Industry

Tsai, Yong-ning 06 September 2004 (has links)
Innovations of technologies often brings the industries impacts of different extents, if there is a company who holds KSF (key successful factor) in hand and becomes the leader, another would gradually lose his competitiveness because of not having KSF. This research looks at the development history of the Third Generation (3G) telecommunication services of Japan as background, which contains the overall environment, the 3G technology systems, the industry value-chain, the using condition of telecommunication services. Cooperating with the operation performance data including the number of 3G subscribers, ARPU (average revenue per user), the using amount of data services, the revenue of the 3G operators, etc., I probed into the KSF of the distribution of 3G, focused especially on why the performance of the early entrant NTT DoCoMo would fell behind the follower KDDI/au. And from the research results, I further discussed the market trend of the future 3G industry, hoping to provide references for the new incomers of 3G in Taiwan. As 3G services has only been started for less than 3 years and relevant academic researches remain few, this thesis can be seen as a exploratory research. And this research is based on literature survey of second-hand materials collected from white papers, fact sheets, media reports, proprietors¡¦ public materials, opinions from concerned professionals, industrial research reports, resources on the internet, etc., from which I analyzed and verified the operation performances of the operators and its relativity with the KSF I concluded from the literature: quality of telecommunications, speed of data transfer, provided contents and services, charge plans and promotion, properties and design of mobiles. The research show that what effect the performance of operators in the early period of 3G distribution are quality of telecommunications and the properties and series number of corresponding mobiles, and after the infrastructure construction period the focus would shift to new 3G services and contents and the price charged. As the telecommunication industry of Japan is on the way from infrastructure construction period to overall growth period, the performance of operators would be affected by the design and properties of corresponding mobiles and the telecommunication fees. Due to the 900i series mobile and the follow-up of the packet norm, the competitiveness of NTT DoCoMo on 3G has apparently raised. Although the number of 3G subscribers of KDDI/au still remains 3 times of DoCoMo, as DoCoMo holds 60% of the market, its top status of the telecommunication industry in Japan seems hard to be shattered. As there are still two important factors: the price battle of data telecommunication and the realization of number portability that may bring huge changes to the 3G market of Japan, the real battle of 3G can be seen as just unveiled.
