OPTIMAL CONTROL DESIGN FOR POLYNOMIAL NONLINEAR SYSTEMS USING SUM OF SQUARES TECHNIQUE WITH GUARANTEED LOCAL OPTIMALITY

Boonnithivorakul, Nattapong 01 May 2010 (has links)
Optimal control design and implementation for nonlinear systems is a topic of much interest. However, unlike for linear systems, for nonlinear systems explicit analytical solution for optimal feedback control is not available. Numerical techniques, on the other hand, can be used to approximate the solution of the HJB equation to find the optimal control. In this research, a computational approach is developed for finding the optimal control for nonlinear systems with polynomial vector fields based on sum of squares technique. In this research, a numerical technique is developed for optimal control of polynomial nonlinear systems. The approach follows a four-step procedure to obtain both local and approximate global optimality. In the first step, local optimal control is found by using the linearization method and solving the Algebraic Riccati equation with respect to the quadratic part of a given performance index. Next, we utilize the density function method to find a globally stabilizing polynomial nonlinear control for the nonlinear system. In the third step, we find a corresponding Lyapunov function for the designed control in the previous steps based on the Hamilton Jacobi inequality by using semidefinite programming. Finally, to achieve global optimality, we iteratively update the pair of nonlinear control and Lyapunov function based on a state-dependent polynomial matrix inequality. Numerical examples illustrate the effectiveness of the design approach.

Studying the Impact of Solar Photovoltaic on Transient Stability of Power Systems using Direct Methods

Mishra, Chetan 07 December 2017 (has links)
The increasing penetration of inverter based renewable generation in the form of solar photo-voltaic (PV) or wind has introduced numerous operational challenges and uncertainties. Among these challenges, one of the major ones is the impact on the transient stability of the grid. On the other hand, the direct methods for transient stability assessment of power systems have also fairly evolved over the past 30 years. These set of techniques inspired from the Lyapunov's direct method provide a clear insight into the system stability changes with a changing grid. The most attractive feature of these types of techniques is the heavy reduction in the computational burden by cutting down on the simulation time. These advancements were still aimed at analyzing the stability of a non-linear autonomous dynamical system and the existing power system perfectly fits that definition. Due to the changing renewable portfolio standards, the power system is undergoing serious structural and performance alterations. The whole idea of power system stability is changing and there is a major lack of work in the field of direct methods in keeping up with these changes. This dissertation aims at employing the pre-existing direct methods as well as developing new techniques to visualize and analyze the stability of a power system with an added subset of complexities introduced by PV generation. / Ph. Estimativa da região de estabilidade via Funções Energia Generalizadas / Estability region estimate using Generalized Energy Functions

Ribeiro, Yuri Cândido da Silva 25 August 2017 (has links)
In this work, we develop computational methods to estimate stability regions and the relevant part of stability boundary of attracting sets of nonlinear dynamical systems. Such methods are based on Generalized Energy Function (GEF) theory and, therefore, can be applied to a larger class of problems than those based on Energy Functions (EF). The theoretical foundations developed in this work, which support the proposed methods, ensure that the estimates are always conservative (in the sense that they are subsets of the true stability region), providing high confidence level when asserting the stability of a system. The presented methods are extensions of the Closest UEP and the CUEP methods, used in the assessment of stability of electrical power systems, to the systems that admit GEF. Even though the Closest UEP and CUEP methods provide estimates in a fast and accurate way, they are only applicable to systems that admit EFs, which consists in a strong limitation for their usage. Many systems do not admit EF and, even if it is possible to prove the existence of an EF, the impossibility to exhibit it in the form of elementary mathematical functions prevents the application of such methods. Other contribution of this work is a computational method to obtain a GEF for polinomial systems. We also applied the presented method to a class of non polinomial systems arising from electrical power system models, after a nonlinear change of variables that provides an equivalent polinomial system. By means of the proposed methods, we aim to offer computational methods to allow fast and accurate stability region estimates which could be used in a broad class of dynamical systems: those that admit GEF. This way, we plan to contribute for the development of methods used in the assessment of stability of electrical power systems and make such tools available to systems from other areas of science.

Αδαμίδης, Δημήτριος 16 May 2007 (has links)
Digital signal processing (DSP) and multimedia applications often profit from the use of a Residue Number System (RNS). Among the most commonly used moduli in such systems are those of 2^n - 1 and 2^n + 1 form and among the most commonly used operations are multiplication and sum-of-squares. These operations are currently performed using distinct design units and consecutive machine cycles. In this paper, we propose two architectures for units that perform either the X * Y or the X^2 + Y^2 operation depending on the value of a control signal. Both modulo 2^n - 1 and diminished-1 2^n + 1 arithmetic is considered.

Ramos, Igor Thiago Minari. January 2018 (has links)
Initially is presented a revision of concepts and control design procedures based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) and on sum of squares (SOS) evidencing the differences and advantages of these methodologies in the control system design. Fuzzy models are commonly used to perform stability analysis and controller design for nonlinear systems, and can be classified by a linear or polynomial consequent model. A goal of this dissertation is to compare these two methodologies in the control system design of a class of uncertain nonlinear systems. For the case of systems whose dynamics can be described only by polynomial functions will be also considered polytopic uncertainty. Therefore, in order to make the design more flexible than that obtained with only one controller with polynomial gain and increase the feasibility region, a new procedure for designing controllers with switched polynomial gains is proposed. The purpose of this switching law is to minimize the time derivative of the Lyapunov function employed in the design. For a more general class of nonlinear systems, controllers with switched gains for polynomial fuzzy models are proposed. The proposed methodology does not require the knowledge of the membership functions for an implementation of the control law. This fact is an important advantage over the many methods that consider avail... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Analysis and control of parabolic partial differential equations with application to tokamaks using sum-of-squares polynomials / Analyse et contrôle des équations aux dérivées partielles parabolique aide de polynômes somme des carrés avec une application sur les tokamaks

Gahlawat, Aditya 28 October 2015 (has links)
In this work we address the problems of stability analysis and controller synthesis for one dimensional linear parabolic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). To achieve the tasks of stability analysis and controller synthesis we develop methodologies akin to the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) framework for Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs). We develop a method for parabolic PDEs wherein we test the feasibility of certain LMIs using SDP to construct quadratic Lyapunov functions and controllers. The core of our approach is the construction of quadratic Lyapunov functions parametrized by positive definite operators on infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Unlike positive matrices, there is no single method of parametrizing the set of all positive operators on a Hilbert space. Of course, we can always parametrize a subset of positive operators, using, for example, positive scalars. However, we must ensure that the parametrization of positive operators should not be conservative. Our contribution is constructing a parametrization which has only a small amount of conservatism as indicated by our numerical results. We use Sum-of-Squares (SOS) polynomials to parametrize the set of positive, linear and bounded operators on Hilbert spaces. As the name indicates, an SOS polynomial is one which can be represented as a sum of squared polynomials. The most important property of an SOS polynomial is that it can be represented using a positive (semi)-definite matrix. This implies that even though the problem of polynomial (semi)-positivity is NP-hard, the problem of checking if polynomial is SOS (and hence (semi)-positive) can be solved using SDP. Therefore, we aim to construct quadratic Lyapunov functions parametrized by positive operators. These positive operators are in turn parametrized by SOS polynomials. This parametrization using SOS allows us to cast the feasibility problem for the existence of a quadratic Lyapunov function as the feasibility problem of LMIs. The feasibility problem of LMIs can then be addressed using SDP. In the first part of the thesis we consider stability analysis and boundary controller synthesis for a large class of parabolic PDEs. The PDEs have spatially distributed coefficients. Such PDEs are used to model processes of diffusion, convection and reaction of physical quantities in anisotropic media. We consider boundary controller synthesis for both the state feedback case and the output feedback case (using and observer design). IN the second part of thesis we design distributed controllers for the regulation of poloidal magnetic flux in a tokamak (a thermonuclear fusion devise). First, we design the controllers to regulate the magnetic field line pitch (the safety factor). The regulation of the safety factor profile is important to suppress the magnetohydrodynamic instabilities in a tokamak. Then, we design controllers to maximize the internally generated bootstrap current density. An increased proportion of bootstrap current would lead to a reduction in the external energy requirements for the operation of a tokamak.

Exploration d'alternatives aux LMI non-quadratiques pour l'analyse des systèmes non linéaires représentés par des modèles Takagi-Sugeno / Exploring some alternatives to non-quadratic LMI conditions for analyzing nonlinear systems based on Takagi-Sugeno modelling

Duong, Chinh Cuong 28 June 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the stability and stabilization of nonlinear systems represented by Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) models. The objective of this work is to explore and find out some alternatives to classical LMI conditions in order to reduce the conservatism. First, we focus on robust stabilisation of uncertain switched T-S models. Based on a switched Lyapunov function, the stabilisation conditions are obtained in terms of LMI. Then, a new approach for the stability analysis of polynomial T-S models is proposed. The goal is here to explore alternatives to LMI in the non-quadratic framework. Therefore, an extension of some preliminary result on the stability analysis of polynomial T-S models is proposed by the use of a multiple polynomial Lyapunov function which lead to less conservatism. The stability conditions are given in terms of Sum-of-Squares (SOS) polynomial optimization problem. Finally, classical T-S models being a particular case of polynomial ones, an attempt is done as an alternative to LMI in the non quadratic framework for the design of non-PDC controllers via SOS techniques. Within this framework, global stability may be guaranteed if there exists a solution to the SOS constraints. Moreover, it didn't require unknown parameters in advance like in LMI based non quadratic approaches. However, these SOS based controller design conditions are obtained through a restrictive modelling assumption, suggesting future prospects to this work.

Contributions to fuzzy polynomial techniques for stability analysis and control

Pitarch Pérez, José Luis 07 January 2014 (has links)
The present thesis employs fuzzy-polynomial control techniques in order to improve the stability analysis and control of nonlinear systems. Initially, it reviews the more extended techniques in the field of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy systems, such as the more relevant results about polynomial and fuzzy polynomial systems. The basic framework uses fuzzy polynomial models by Taylor series and sum-of-squares techniques (semidefinite programming) in order to obtain stability guarantees. The contributions of the thesis are: ¿ Improved domain of attraction estimation of nonlinear systems for both continuous-time and discrete-time cases. An iterative methodology based on invariant-set results is presented for obtaining polynomial boundaries of such domain of attraction. ¿ Extension of the above problem to the case with bounded persistent disturbances acting. Different characterizations of inescapable sets with polynomial boundaries are determined. ¿ State estimation: extension of the previous results in literature to the case of fuzzy observers with polynomial gains, guaranteeing stability of the estimation error and inescapability in a subset of the zone where the model is valid. ¿ Proposal of a polynomial Lyapunov function with discrete delay in order to improve some polynomial control designs from literature. Preliminary extension to the fuzzy polynomial case. Last chapters present a preliminary experimental work in order to check and validate the theoretical results on real platforms in the future. / Pitarch Pérez, JL. (2013).
