Abrahams, Edith Elizabeth 03 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Performance management and performance appraisal plays a crucial role in developing human resources. In the social work profession the social work supervisor is the person responsible to appraise the performance of the social worker because of the excellent position to observe the job performance directly and consistently. The purpose of this study is to investigate how social work supervisors perform their supervisory functions and apply performance appraisal. The researcher used qualitative research for an exploratory and descriptive study. In-depth interviews were use as data collection method. The sample group was social work supervisors in the employment of the Western Cape Department of Social Development. Performance appraisal can be use to encourage professional growth and development of social workers. Performance appraisal is a supervisory duty and thus a component of administrative, educational and supportive supervision. Prestasiebeoordeling van maatskaplike werkers in welsynsorganisasies

Louw, Karen Louise 11 1900 (has links)
Performance appraisal is critical to the effective management of a welfare organisation. Performance appraisal of social workers are often neglected, implemented incorrectly or regarded within a negative light. This exploratory/ descriptive study aims to set scientifically grounded guidelines for the implementation of performance appraisal with regard to social workers. The aim is not to provide comprehensive guidelines regarding every aspect of perforance appraisal, but to identify gaps and problems which may be studied in future research. Through questionnaires the perceptions of performance appraisal by 38 social workers and four social work managers were tested and described. It seemed that performance appraisal of social workers is geared towards development, and that social workers and social work managers do benefit from performance appraisal. Social workers were of the opinion that performance appraisal should be employed to identify gaps and development areas in equipping social workers professionally. Recommendations are made regarding aspects for further research / Social Work / M. Diac. (Maatskaplike Werk-rigting)

Perceptions, challenges and coping strategies of social work managers regarding their management functions

Gunda, Edison 02 1900 (has links)
The goal of this study was to explore the perceptions, challenges and coping strategies of social work managers regarding their management functions. Management is vital for growth and survival of the social welfare sector and this can be realized if social work managers understand and are able to execute their management functions. This study utilized a qualitative research approach to unpack the perceptions and challenges of social work managers. Explorative, descriptive and contextual research designs were used to explore how social work managers cope in their settings. Data were collected from social work managers in the NGO sector and the Department of Social Development, through semistructured interviews. A sample was selected by using purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using Creswell’s (2007:150) analytical spiral model, and data was verified using Guba’s model in Creswell (2007:150). Relevant social research ethical issues were fully considered in this study. The study revealed that there were social work managers who had the basic understanding of what social work management entails, whilst there were also those who did not understand what is meant by the concept ‘social work management’. In this study it was found that social work managers perform key management functions and roles such as planning, organising, leading, controlling, supervision, fundraising and financial management, coordination of services and performance management. The study revealed common challenges which are faced by social work managers. These challenges include a shortage of human resources, physical resources shortage, a lack of knowledge on management and a lack of adequate funding. / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

The influence of supervisory behaviour and the internal work environment on employee-driven innovation and creativity in an open distance e-Learning institution in South Africa

Leach, Geraldine Christine 01 1900 (has links)
Innovation and creativity are regarded as key drivers for organisational innovative success. Organisations that do not have a strategic focus on innovation and creativity and do not have a culture fostering innovative behaviour, will find it difficult to survive in these turbulent times. The innovative ability of organisations depends heavily on all employees at all levels of the organisation. Innovations driven by employees are known as EDI and creativity. Even though organisations understand the importance of EDI, a significant number of barriers within organisations still hamper EDI and creativity. The study was exploratory in nature and provided valuable insights into determining whether supervisory behaviour and the internal work environment had an impact on EDI and creativity in an ODeL institution in South Africa. A quantitative survey design was selected for this study. A census approach was followed, and primary quantitative data were collected from a subgroup within the identified institution, using self-administered electronic questionnaires. Through the process of exploratory factor analysis, five supervisory behaviour/management factors and five internal work environment factors were identified. The supervisory behaviour/management factors included supervisory support, management support, innovation management, innovative leadership, and team innovation. The internal work environment factors included organisational innovation culture, innovation mechanisms, innovative opportunities, risk-taking tolerance, and dedication to innovation. Correlation and structural equation modelling were conducted. The results indicate a relationship between supervisory behaviour and the internal work environment with regard to EDI and creativity. Recommendations regarding supervisory behaviour and creating enabling work environments to enhance and support EDI and creativity are made. / Human Resource Management / M. Com. Examining the feedback environment and accountability in informal performance management systems

Coulter-Kern, Paige E. 06 March 2013 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Improving performance management is a high priority for many organizations that want to improve the performance of their employees. Recently, researchers have focused on the social context to promote behavioral change, and have created new scales to examine context, such as the feedback environment. The current study examined internal and external accountability as mediators of the relationship between the feedback environment and developmental behaviors. Participants each completed three scales measuring the feedback environment, internal and external accountability, and developmental behaviors. Results suggested that internal and external accountability both mediate the relationship between the feedback environment and developmental behaviors, but neither is a stronger mediator than the other. In addition, internal and external accountability both mediate the relationship between each component of the feedback environment and developmental behaviors, but again neither is a stronger mediator than the other. This study contributed to the literature on performance management, and emphasized the importance of training supervisors to use the feedback environment to increase perceptions of accountability for employees.

Hanekom, Wouda 31 December 2006 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Current society view performance appraisal in organization as a very important component and organization are sometimes legally obliged to apply performance appraisal. From a qualitative perspective the researcher want to explore and describe the criteria that must be taken in account during performance appraisal of community developers. A qualitative approach will be utilized following an explorative, descriptive and contextual research design. The study will be conducted by municipalities, non-governmental organizations and state departments in the Boland area in the Western Cape. Data will be collected by means of semi-structured focusgroup interviews with community developers. Data will be analysed according to the framework provided by Tesch (in Creswell, 1994). Guba's model (in Krefting, 1991) will be employed for data verification. Recommendations were provided according the criteria that must be taken in account with performance appraisal for community developers.
